Help me with make up

I’m 37 years old busy mum of two and very rarely where make up. I can apply a bit of powder, mascara and lippy but that’s about it and in all honesty it looks shit Grin. I don’t want to wear it all the time but I do want to make more of an effort at the weekend. Can any of you lovely mumsnetters recommend anybody for basic make up tutorials or give me any ideas on wonder products. At the moment I use a Clinique powder and maybeline 2000 calorie mascara. I’m also very pale with dark dirty blonde hair. Please help me.

Hi there. Have you looked on YouTube? It's absolutely full of make up tutorials. You can look for tutorials for pale skin, brown eyes, blue eyes, black hair, close-set eyes. Anything and everything.

I would suggest that to start ditch the powder and go for cream products - they look more natural, are more flattering and don't show brush strokes like liquids might. If you'd like to try without spending an arm and a leg, the Revolution foundation sticks are fantastic and great for on the go as you can pop them in your handbag. You can apply them with a brush (I'd go for a round one - I hate flat brushes for foundation) or a damp beauty blender type sponge.

If you also get a 'jumbo pencil' by NYX (Superdrug stocks the brand) in black, you can tightline your eyes (look it up) and that will make a huge difference to your lashes. Then apply some volumising mascara. L'Oreal Voluminous is superb - Eva Longoria's make up artist uses it - and she has access to every mascara under the sun!

A little bit of bronzer will give your face dimension and warmth - try not to go for anything too warm through or on your pale skin it will read as orange. Something cooler will work. If you don't know how to choose go to a beauty counter and they will be able to advise you. Or you could buy a stick foundation in a slightly darker shade and use that (I often do that when I'm being lazy and don't want to hunt around for a bronzer - I have TONS of makeup).

For lippies, wet & wild does some really nice creamy and moisturising ones but it might be difficult to find. MUA (believe it or not, again, stocked in Superdrug) also does some nice ones. If you are not using colours on your eyes you can play with colour on your lips. Try a pink/magenta tone, or even red - red makes your skin look glowly and is very glam even if you have barely any other make up on!

Once you've learnt what you like and what you don't like you can then buy more expensive brands (although I buy all sorts and some cheaper brands given the costly ones a run for their money).

Hope you enjoy the search!
