If you have VERY low-maintenance mid-length hair, what style do you have?

I'm donating my hip-length hair next weekend and I'm keen to choose a very low-maintenance style. Needs to be long enough to tie up, and I would like to be able to leave it to air dry at home without any styling for most days (newborn twins, plus a toddler and 5 year old so I really mean NO styling!)

I have vaguely wavy hair, quite thick, and naturally 'choppy' at the front where is never grows longer than my ears.

I have similar hair to yours and have it in a fairly basic bob, some very slight shaping round the face (not really noticeable but stops it looking too heavy).

My hair needs some encouragement to hold its wave, so I run a mixture of mousse & serum through it after washing and scrunch it to keep the waves. That's it.

Not blow-dried in years and I can't believe how much time I used to spend drying and straightening it!

Mine is shoulder length and my hairdresser thins it out as much as possible. Few layers at the bottom. I always have it tied up so it doesn't need to be a style really it just needs to not look like lego hair which is what it would do naturally Grin

Sounds like my hair! Shoulder length, few layers cut in to take out weight. Side parting sort of. Longish fringe. Looks ok air dried, better if I dry the fringe.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 23/01/2020 15:43

Mine's slightly layered just shoulder length. I have naturally curly/wavy hair, which I wash once or twice a week, add a dot of light serum then blow dry and finish off with straighteners, enough to smooth it but not get it absolutely straight. I don't have to do anything with it between washes apart from redoing my fringe occasionally.

I've got mine cut all one length now as layers need styling ime.

Kenworthington · 23/01/2020 15:53

Long layered with a heavy fringe.

Spanneroo · 23/01/2020 16:24

Thank you for the suggestions. Sounds like layering may be the way to go, and with some shaping/thinning towards the front.

Those with a fringe, do you find it needs much encouragement to behave itself? I'm tempted to get one because I always end up with hair falling in my face when it's not tied up, but I worry it'll being annoying to get it to sit right and growing it out will take such a long time!

Mine is armpit length (ends at armpit level, not the same length as armpit hair!) and all one length, with some long layers around the front so it doesn’t drag down around my face.

My hair is just cut straight and I wear it in a low bun most days. Similar to the picture but literally takes 15 seconds in the morning.

I have a fringe but it spends most of its time on one side or the other!

Btw, brilliant of you to donate your hair. Are you nervous about the chop?

Spanneroo · 23/01/2020 19:32

I thought I would be worried about donating it but actually, I'll be glad to see the back of it Grin It's a real chore to wash it these days - soooo heavy when wet!

Jojo that's my kind of style. Do you find having it all one length makes it 'poof' out a bit? I worry about unwanted volume when I go shorter. Though I guess retrospective thinning/layering isn't difficult!

The hairdresser should be able to advise. And yes, if it doesn’t look right the first time, you can little adjustments like layering done.

Scrunch dried wavy bob with highlights

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 24/01/2020 17:17

Can we have a before and after pic please? Mine is very long due to laziness and tightfistedness, but takes little maintenance as it's fine. Good luck and you're doing a lovely thing.

getupnow · 26/01/2020 08:28

My hair is long but I find that the easiest option for me. I have experimented with shorter lengths, fringes but it always involve more faffing. I have thick wavy hair with long layers at the front, pretty much like Gisele's so the vast majority of the time I wash, no blow dry or styling & it looks like the first pic. On the rare occasion I make more effort & use a tongs it like the 2nd image.

If your hair has a tendency to wave a fringe might be problematic. I've recently had a long, sideswept fringe cut back in, looks great when I've just dried it but any hint of moisture in the air and it turns into a pair of short corkscrew curls which look really silly. I carry hair clips now so if it happens I can pin them back.

Frazzled2207 · 26/01/2020 08:38

Agree fringes are difficult unless you have naturally poker straight hair. Also need to be trimmed often. Avoid!

getupnow · 26/01/2020 08:38

Yes when I had a fringe I had to straighten & it often would look shite

LisaSimpsonsbff · 26/01/2020 10:23

I have shoulder length, wavy to curly hair and a fringe - I agree the layers help a lot! I don't find my fringe too bad and I find that if I do straighten it it makes the whole lot look 'done' in 30 seconds, which is good! I think it's hard to predict though - I was very pleasantly surprised to find that my fringe is normally quite well behaved because the rest of my hair isn't!

LisaSimpsonsbff · 26/01/2020 10:27

This is my hair right now, left to hair dry with no product, so you can ascertain whether or not my definition of 'looks ok' matches yours!
