Conflicting warm and cool undertone advice

Buddleia26 · 20/01/2020 15:10

I've been reading lots of advice on how to find your skin undertone as I want to declutter my wardrobe and know for sure which colours suit me for clothes and make up.

I've done lots of tests/quizzes online but they're all conflicting. Does anyone have any advice ?

Veins - more blue but some green some purple! So possibly neutral but blue = cool.
Tanning/burning. I burn extremely easily = cool.
White/off white. When I hold up white versus cream I think cream suits me better = cool
Gold v silver . I think gold suits me better but can't tell if that's cos I prefer it. = warm

Other info
Hazel brown eyes (not pure brown)
Brown hair. Quite light golden brown
I blush pink v easily but generally v pale skin.
These bits of my natural colouring seem to push me to warm, at odds with most of the other answers above.

Based on hair and eyes I seem to come out as a warm soft autumn but avoid most of the soft autumn colours they suggest like khaki etc as I feel they wash be out. But maybe I should be wearing them!?!

Thanks for reading.
I'm a bit skint whilst on mat leave but would love to "get my colours done" properly at some point!

I’m the same - very light skin, ice blue/grey eyes but auburn hair! The hair seems to skew any analysis to autumn but autumn colours don’t generally do anything for me! I now have to take each colour in its own merits and I’m learning for me it’s more the properties of colours rather than the colour itself - so very bright colours look shite on me, as do pastels, I generally need mid shade but not too bright.

What helped for me was going to MAC and putting (for example) NW15 and NC15 foundation swatches on. Same colour, different undertones
NC made me look jaundiced so I know I am cool toned!

Buddleia26 · 20/01/2020 15:45

@Hollyhead that's interesting. I love bright jewel colours but they also wash me out a bit. Don't want to wear only earth colours either but your theory on tones is a good one.

@ClientListQueen I don't wear much foundation but will try this trick when I'm next in town, thanks.

I've also read you can be neutral, has anyone experienced this?

It sounds like you're fairly neutral- I'm the same. I think I'm cool- but not extremely cool so I can get away with warmer cool colours if you know what I mean. I don't think colouring is as clear cut as just being warm or cool. Really cool colours like ice blue or ice pink or deep cool colours like purple and deep green don't look nice on me- likewise, really warm colours like orange, mustard, and bright yellow look horrible, but I think coral pink, pale yellow, warm green and warm blues look nice. I'm naturally mousy haired with greenish/blueish yes with flecks of gold and pale skin.

You say that cream suits you better and this means you’re cool. This is wrong, it means you’re warm, as does hold jewellery

Itsashame · 20/01/2020 17:49

That was meant to say gold jewellery

SallieSallow · 20/01/2020 18:35

I’ve had an online analysis done and got told I was warm autumn, browns/yellows/olives/beige really don’t suit me though (bring out the yellow in my skin!) but I’m willing to try some of the other suggestions like deep coral and teal.

I’m inclined to think I might be neutral as I’m much more drawn to deep jewel tones and when I (very rarely) wear jewellery I prefer silver but maybe what I like and what suits me are two different things. Though I’m also inclined to think that unless someone has met you in person and spent time watching you try different colours, any analysis (whether done by yourself or someone else) is not going to be super accurate.

Ellapaella · 20/01/2020 18:48

Rather than warm or cool try and identify whether you have pink or yellow undertones. Easiest way to do this is to go to an Estée Lauder counter and ask them to do a colour match for you.
I spent years assuming I was cool toned as I'm fairly pale and don't tan very easily but I am actually yellow toned (I'm an autumn) and once I'd sussed that out my make up and clothes instantly looked better. I also suit silver rather than gold jewellery despite the assumption that warm/yellow toned people suit gold better.

Ellapaella · 20/01/2020 18:49

I have red undertones to my hair and hazel-green eyes.

kmini · 20/01/2020 18:50

You sound neutral but maybe just a little bit more warm. Cream is definitely warm - white is cool. I saw a colour chart wheel on pinterest the other day - thought that would help if neutral?

Buddleia26 · 20/01/2020 21:52

Thanks everyone Star

So it sounds like I might be neutral with a leaning towards warm now I know cream is indicative of warmer undertones. But perhaps I should stick with the mid shades of colours from what people have said, especially if I do wear cool sometimes.

I will add Estée Lauder to my list when I'm next in town, thanks @Ellapaella

Definitely going to get a professional consultation done one day, I'm curious to see what they'd say...maybe I'll ask for one for my birthday!

I still think I have trouble separating what I like from what actually suits me. But maybe post partum isn't the best time to look at your skin tone as it doesn't seem radiant in many colours Crown Wink

I was going to say that cream is warm - but see others have beaten me to it. ;)

I've never had my colours done, but playing around with it (because deep inside me is a rule-abiding citizen who would love a Firm System) I sort of pegged myself as a winter purely based on what colours I think suit me. But my hair/skin contrast didn't seem to fit. And I cannot cannot cannot wear pure white, which is very un-wintery. Then I discovered the deep/dark autumn palette. That's the thing for us that are more easily defined as warm-toned autumnal types but who only seem to like deep tones.

elementalcolour.com.au/blog/dark-autumn they are MYSTERIOUS and ENCHANTING dontchaknow

Anyway I've found it quite helpful actually, try to stick to these shades so I find dark colours that are warmer.

Buddleia26 · 23/01/2020 15:08

Interesting link @banivani and nice website to browse. I think it might be time to phase out the safe black I've worn for years as a neutral which is harsh and start replacing with browns greys and navys where possible.

The article on soft autumns also reinforced the need for mid toned shades.

Yes, I discovered the website looking for palettes once upon a time and found it quite useful. She has some good examples of colour combinations and tones. Glad you liked it!
