Shampoo for dandruff

not sure this is the right place or not

my son is 13. He is probably at the early edges of puberty as in he has started getting some facial spots and very occassionally is a little bit sweaty, but nothing beyond this.

Last couple of months Ive noticed he is getting bad dandruff. Mainly seems to be coming from an area on the front right hand side of his head but suspect it may be a lesser amount across the whole scalp.

He had been using head and shoulders 2 in 1 but this doesnt seem to be stopping it. He has really fine hair so its quite noticeable.

He had cradle cap quite badly as a baby, which lasted into quite late childhood, and was in this same area.

We have a family history of psoriasis (although this is not that, simply dry and flakey bits) and excema (this is not itchy) and hayfever, so obviously have some atopic tendancies.

His hair gets very greasy very quickly too and can look lank if not washed regularly, although Im worried about drying his scalp out more so he tends to wash every 3 days

has anyone any advice

nizoral shampoo is really good for dandruff, small bottle though! Works best if you leave it on the scalp for 5 mins then wash off

Chochito · 20/01/2020 16:01

I think he should wash his hair every day.

If H&S isn't working, try a different shampoo for dandruff, e.g. the one mentioned by Glitterb.

My 14 year old got dandruff at 13 and tried Nizoral mentioned above, it cleared it mostly all up within 1 wash and he uses it regularly to keep it at bay
I ordered online I think.

NettleTea · 20/01/2020 17:08

Brilliant. Have ordered some, though he looks a bit grumpy at the 'wash your hair daily' suggestion!

I don’t think he’ll need to with the Nizoral.
I’d then switch to Nizoral once a week and a SLS free one the rest of the time.

Body shop's ginger shampoo is excellent too, it got rid of my flaky scalp completely.

Bananaman123 · 20/01/2020 20:26

I second body shop ginger

Minky35 · 20/01/2020 21:32

My daughters scalp cleared with Nizoral now we can keep it at bay with vosene / H&S, but strictly washing every other day. Any longer definitely lets it creep back.

Holland and Barrett coffee dandruff shampoo is excellent. (Doesn't smell of coffee😁).

NettleTea · 21/01/2020 08:18

OK, I will order the ginger one too - might send DP into Body shop at lunchtime to pick one up for me.
The Nizoral will be good for my psoriasis/scalp allergies too, which have reared their head this week.
thanks everyone

It’s probably not dandruff if H&S isn’t helping. If he had cradle cap as a baby, then it’s more likely to be seborrhoeic dermatitis. You would be better taking a quick trip to the pharmacist or GP rather than trying lots of OTC stuff and risking further irritation.

okiedokieme · 21/01/2020 08:47

Look for a paraben free shampoo, this was what caused the issue (very similar to described) not dandruff

TwitcherOfCurtains · 21/01/2020 08:51

Try a selenium shampoo

RhubarbTea · 21/01/2020 17:35

Hands down, the ONLY one that works for me is this one. It's pricey as you only get a tiny bottle but you don't need loads. It works on me and my 11 year old DS when we get flaky scalp. For best results let the foam sit on the head for a minute or two before rinsing, nott too long as it's quite drying. It has selenium in.

That one RhubarbTea is contains selenium and is fantastic!

I absolutely swear by Philip Kingsley shampoo for itchy flakey scalp. I tried everything the GP suggested and a whole bunch of others eg. Head and shoulders etc etc and the Philip Kingsley one is the only one that works for me. Good luck, it’s such an embarrassing thing to suffer with.

NettleTea · 21/01/2020 20:42

Thank you. I will try the one I ordered and if not will get him to the dr for a prescription one.
