Acne rosacea - skincare or dermatologist?

dinodiva · 20/01/2020 06:27

This is about my husband. He has very sensitive skin with rosacea, and often gets nasty, sore spots between his eyebrows. He’s having a bad flare up at the moment, and had a reaction to the Liz Earle moisturiser that he’s been using for the last couple of years - his face swelled a little bit and was redder than usual.

I’d appreciate some advice on any types of skincare that might help him, I wonder that very plain stuff is probably best. I use a combination of The Ordinary and Clinique, and after a bit of research am trying to encourage him to use my hyaluronic stuff to start with, but is this the right approach?

Or should we just suck it up and send him to a dermatologist? He does have very sensitive skin (he also has asthma and eczema) so I wonder if there are some underlying allergies. I just feel a bit sorry for him really. He keeps saying how he’s 44 and should have grown out of having spotty skin by now!

He will be better off if he ditches dairy, wine, caffeine and sugar.

Look up about demoted mites which can cause rosacea.

Put tea tree or lavender on spots. Sleep with sudocrem on them.

Demodex mites*

Again, soolantra! You can get it online at Pharmacy2U. Best product for rosacea.

TantricTwist · 21/01/2020 07:53

Liz Earle is not great for sensitive skin.

He needs to see a dermatologist.
He needs simpler products by Vichy or La Roche Posay the French pharmacy's who know their stuff.

The Ordinary and Clinique are not simple products as you seem to imagine.

You really need to see a dermatologist because your poor DH is using these products which you are very incorrectly recommending.

ppeatfruit · 21/01/2020 09:02

kwkw I assume you were saying that essential oils irritate the skin. You only need to use 2 drops of pure organic T tree to 3\ 5ml of pure almond oil. Unless the t tree is not fresh there is no way at all that it will irritate the skin ( far far less than the petroleum based branded SLS containing products) it has great benefits for all bacteriological and viral infections. Lavender ess. oil too.

I use it for a mouthwash as a deodorant and any spots.

raindropsfallingonglass · 21/01/2020 09:44

Just because something (tea tree oil) is natural, doesn't mean it's a good idea. Both lavender and tea tree have been shown to be endocrine disruptors (they affect hormones, especially in boys and men). Tea tree oil is poisonous and shouldn't be used around the mouth at all, and is quite allergenic (causing anything from localised reactions to full systemic effects). As a sensitive skin owner, there is no way I would put tea tree oil onto my face.

I have Rosacea and am very allergic to Tea Tree oil. The best thing is to use as few bland products as possible. I use Cerave cleanser and Cerave moisturiser with spf in. Spf is essential in preventing Rosacea flare ups.. Soolantra can work very well as can Metronidazole gel and other preparations. Do try get an appointment with a dermatologist. But in the meantime order some soolantra online. Just beware this takes a while to work.

ppeatfruit · 21/01/2020 09:52

That's interesting raindrops I use ORGANIC FRESH T tree mixed with organic almond oil and have never ever found a problem. The massive manufacturers of all the branded products kill tons of animals in testing and still don't make particularly benign stuff.

I don't read links because of security . But the huge companies will be feeling threatened by people who don't want over packaged, plastic stuff and might want pure products that have been used for thousands and thousands of years (as in Australia) with no problems.

raindropsfallingonglass · 21/01/2020 09:57

It doesn't matter how organic it is - it is still oestrogenic, and is linked to boys and men developing breasts (the link that you don't want to click is to a science news website which is discussing a conference presentation from last year - it has nothing to do with 'big companies being scared' and everything to do with scientific research. The study was funded by the US National Institute of Health).

For this reason I would probably also be cautious if I had had an oestrogen-fed cancer, or there were any such cancers in the family.

Kwkwjwkek · 21/01/2020 11:12

If you look on YouTube there’s so many videos on why essential oils/fragrance are bad for the skin. No matter how much you dilute. Don’t get me wrong, I use them and I like the smell. But as OP is asking for advice they shouldn’t use them as it’s sensitising, I’m trying to change to fragrance free products and those without essential oils. Natural products don’t mean they’re good.

ppeatfruit · 21/01/2020 11:43

I didn't say they were natural, after all so is deadly nightshade. They are still 100 percent better than products that have plastic, petroleum and sodium laureth sulphates in them.

I tell you what gives men breasts BEER , hops are full of oestrogens. Also the water we drink which has residue of the contraceptive pill in it, the fish are all becoming female. Scare mongering about essential oils is a rather strange IMO. I use 2 drops !!!!! mixed with 5 ml. of almond oil. People are using coconut oil as if it's wonderful, I've had bad effects from that NEVER from almond oil

CoolShoeshine · 21/01/2020 17:03

I’ve suffered from rosacea for years and soolantra is definitely worth a try from an online pharmacy, a bit pricey but lasts ages because you only need a tiny amount at a time. Other than that. I find cetaphil good for washing and la Roche posay toleraine ar. I’d be very wary about using other things, my skin instantly feels like sunburn as soon as most products touch it. Also I avoid high neck sweaters and scarves as they temporarily irritate my face and second what everyone has said about sugar and wine 😢

TheVanguardSix · 21/01/2020 17:07

I highly recommend cicaplast Baum B5 OP! It’s been life changing for me. I have Lupus and my skin flares up with malar rash and rosacea type inflammation LaRoche Posay is such a great over the counter range (Boots stocks it). And the cicaplast baume is my life buoy.

UndomesticHousewife · 21/01/2020 17:16

I had rosacea with swellings an bumps and all sorts. I sent some photos of my face to Superdrug online doctor and paid for Soolantra cream.
My skin is now really clear. It's still a bit red but only a bit but all the spots and bumps have gone and have not come back.

dinodiva · 21/01/2020 18:29

Thanks all, I’m going to see if I can get him soolantra as that seems to be the thing to try! I appreciate the recommendations about face wash too - he uses Simple but I suspect that there will be something better.

Will also nag about a dermatologist.

As for getting him to give up wine - I don’t think I fancy my chances there...

Dermatologist

UndomesticHousewife · 22/01/2020 05:34

I didn't go to the doctor or a dermatologist as my skin was so bad I didn't want to wait.
After doing a lot of research I came to the conclusion what I had was caused by the demodex mite because I had spots and swellings and itching, and soolantra would be a good thing to get rid of it and it wasn't a guarantee that a doctor or derm would prescribe it.
It turns out that the soolantra has totally cleared it up and it now doesn't matter what creams or washes I use on my face as it just doesn't react to things like before.

BedSprings · 22/01/2020 05:51

I get the rosacea sores and the big red spots that look like boils round my nose.
I've tried dozens of skin products over the years and the best skin cream I've found is one for eczema and dry skin, link below. It's really soothing and very good.
At the first sign of an outbreak, when the itching starts try germolene with antiseptic cream, I found it's really ace heading an outbreak off
Also a 100% sun block on sunny days.

TwoPlugs · 09/03/2020 19:25

@dinodiva how has your husband got on? Just came across your thread and for a moment thought we were married to the same man! My DH is the same age, used Liz Earle for years and has same problems. Wondered if you had any successes?

dinodiva · 10/03/2020 16:06

@TwoPlugs a bit mixed really. I got him to use Cetaphil and that was fine for a while, but then he had another big flare up.
He went to the doc last week and was given oral/topical steroids, antihistamines and a referral to a dermatologist. The drugs have (obviously) made a difference, but he stopped them and flared up again. My next challenge is to make him keep a food diary to see if there are any patterns with things he eats.
It’s very frustrating! It really gets him down.

Gabrielle33 · 10/03/2020 16:53

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 10/03/2020 17:09

Hot water for rosacea?Confused

TwoPlugs · 13/03/2020 22:42

Ah @dinodiva I bet it does get him down. The one bit of your body you can't hide. My DH has got some Soolantra following this thread so we'll see how that works. He swears his is caused by stress. To be fair, I think he's right (and that's rare!).
