Applying Foundation

I have quite a thick foundation from Avon & it seems to always end up patchy, even with light moisturiser applied first. I use my fingers. Am I better to use a brush or a blending sponge? My skin is mature but I still get slightly greasy areas & a few spots

I’ve found that a blending sponge has transformed how my foundation looks when it’s one. Would thoroughly recommend

I’ve also recently tried a massive thick brush and it makes a big difference too

Let moisturiser sink in well before hand,
Damp make up brush, stipple on foundation first starting in the centre of the face, then go over again in very small circles to push the foundation into the skin.
A primer applied after moisturiser may make a difference too.

Any particular brand of blending sponge? They seem to vary in price quite a lot

You can pick them up from TKMaxx. Always make sure it’s damp prior to use, otherwise your foundation will just soak into the sponge. I would also recommend setting with a little translucent powder.

Try using a beauty blender and dabbed it on. Only use a tiny bit of foundation and then build it up if you need more coverage.
Also, use a good primer for your face to help with the oil. Smashbox do really good ones for all skin types.

I use Poundland sponges - £1 for a bag of different shapes.

I never got on with foundation brushes. I buy a large bag of makeup applicator wedges and throw them after about a week’s useage to stop them going manky.

Moisturiser, sunscreen, Smashbox photo finish primer and then small amount of foundation on top. With a good primer you need less foundation.

The real techniques beauty sponge is fab. You can often get them cheap in TK Maxx or boots often do a 2 for 1 deal so you can always have a clean one on hand.

For quickness I will sometimes use a brush to apply and then go over with a damp sponge to get rid of any blotches or streaks from the brush. But best results using the sponge only (just takes a little longer) - make sure the sponge is damp though else it absorbs all the product and you end up wasting foundation. I'd avoid a sponge that is too firm also as it doesn't give as good effect.

Thanks everyone. Where can I buy the Smashbox photo finish primer?

Boots sell it I’m sure. They have that brand anyway.

I use a body shop brush and it's amazing! It's a round brush but has two lengths of bristles. It's like airbrushing your skin. Apply in light circles.

@Bunnylady54 Smashbox sells in most Boots or you can get it from online shops like Lookfantastic or directly from their own site.
