Eye shadow palette recommendations

Can anyone recommend an eye shadow palette for an eye shadow virgin?

I would like to master a simple eyeshadow look for a big party. I’m 50 this year & have read that less shimmer is better for wrinkly crinkly eyes like mine Grin

Has anyone got any recommendations for a nice palette with some good basic colours?

If it makes any difference I’m blonde with blue/grey eyes

Shimmer is for everyone! Are you into blending etc or would you just be looking to put a block shade on? I like the Revolution pallettes (sold in superdrug), they're fairly cheap but a good range of colours and have mattes and shimmers in, plus they last well and can be applied with a finger or a brush. Maybe go for one like this?

The other option would be a single colour pot, but that would be about the same price anyway.

I second Revolution- they are great - loads to choose form, really reasonable and colours are nice

Sinjistalk · 16/01/2020 14:59

Oh, very pretty, thank you. I will give that palette a try!

Grumbley I want to try & blend if I can, but need to practise. I’ve not been very successful with eyeshadow so far. Think I need to buy a brush too.

A big fluffy brush is fool proof for blending.

Bananaman123 · 16/01/2020 15:12

Beauty bay do these eyeshadows which are great value and guide you on what to use the colour for and what goes together.

Im light blone, blue eyes, pale and warm colours look good, browns, orange and pinks.

For a cheaper alternative revolution but go in and swatch colours. I love my peach and gingerbread too faced ones, the formula is lovely and colours great

I like Sleek - affordable, I bought a few just to mess with for an occasion & stuck to them but my friend loves urban decay

Elowyn · 16/01/2020 15:25

You can't go wrong with Urban Decay. I have the Naked 2 Basics palette.

You can look for eyeshadow tutorial videos on YouTube or step by step photos on Pinterest where the person getting the makeup done has ideally similar colouring to you, and check out which palettes they recommend.

If you have hooded eyes you can pop that in as a search term on YouTube/Pinterest.

It's your birthday so treat yourself! Anastasia Sultry palette is beautiful. The pigments and the colours are universally flattering on all skin tones. Have a fabulous time.

FreakStar · 16/01/2020 17:18

It depends on your colouring really- warm or cool?

I'm fairly col toned and pale and my favourite palette is this one by Laura Mercier

Ive recently purchased my first Huda palette and the shadows are so creamy and long lasting. Way better than my MAC, CT and TFord palette. Ive got the topaz obsession quartet for green eyes and its amazing for the cost.

Chanel05 · 16/01/2020 17:29

I have Urban Decay Naked 2 and Naked 3 and I adore them.

Sinjistalk · 16/01/2020 18:54

Thanks everyone - lots of lovely recommendations

Urban Decay Naked Honey is amazing. Lovely colours, goes on beautifully and lasts all day.

Grumbley · 16/01/2020 19:52

OP I would recommend watching some YouTube videos if you wanted some tips and advice on blending, I always look on it for tips!

Hi Sinjistalk. I actually had a great bargain yesterday. I usually use one of the Urban Decay Naked palettes (number 3) but at £42 it's pretty expensive so I have been looking for a cheaper alternative. I spotted a nice one by PUR Cosmetics. It's around £24 but it's actually on their site for £5 in the sale and it's even free delivery. Ive never used any of their products before but the reviews are good and they're cruelty free. I ordered one straight away and for a fiver its not the end of the world if I don't like it. I'll post the link

Lizzy1980 · 17/01/2020 04:21

There are a few reviews of the palette on YouTube and as Grumbley said there are loads of really good make up tutorials on there. I'm not great at applying eye makeup but I'd be completely clueless without YouTube. I have also come to realise that the brushes you use are as important as the makeup itself. I was using crappy ones for years but since I splashed out on some decent ones I've found it so much easier to blend. My budget doesn't stretch to buying high end brushes unfortunately but I really like the ecotools ones and M&S do a lovely eyeshadow brush which actually came in their advent calendar. I'll post the link for that too

Have a look at Pampered Wolf on YouTube. She has some great tutorials and product recommendations for mature skin. If you have a Morphe store, or a Boots that stock Morphe near you, they do lovely matte eye shadow palletes that aren't too expensive and also some of the best brushes on the market.

Sinjistalk · 17/01/2020 08:19

Amazing - thanks guys! I’m looking forward to going shopping & trying some of these out.

Lizzy1980 - thank you, I have ordered the brush you linked to.

If you like shimmer and shine I would ignore any of the advice about less shimmer and sparkle as you get older. So what if it gets caught in wrinkles or crepey skin? I’d rather have shimmery, sparkly wrinkles than dull wrinkles.

OTOH if you prefer a matte finish, rock that too. Make up should be creative and life enhancing as well as appearance enhancing so we should just please ourselves regardless of arbitrary age ‘rules’.

FreakStar · 17/01/2020 12:48

Shimmer is fine for everyone. It doesn't matter whether you are young or old, all shadow creases on oily skin eventually- even matte ones.. Use an eyelid primer- Smahbox do a Fab one!

Also. check out Hot and Flashy on Youtube- she has some amazing eyeshadow tutorials for women in their fifties!
