I would use an oil, like Moroccan Oil, after washing and conditioning. Can you leave your hair to dry naturally, to stop using heat that dries it even more?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/01/2020 23:14

L'Oréal extraordinary oil,the normal one NOT the one for coloured hair.

Everley · 17/01/2020 02:58

Are you using a heat protection spray before using your GHDs? Bumble & Bumble have a fab one that works wonders on my frizzball masquerading as hair. It’s the one in their Glow range. Philip Kingsley Elasticizer helps me too.

My hair started to look like this when it was long. I've started wearing it much shorter , having trims every 8 weeks and using a good conditioner. I'm using the Maui moisture pink one right now.

I came to the conclusion that ageing had caused the dryness , but that my hair was very damaged also and that the damaged hair needed growing out.

I still use heat (a straightening brush on low) , but now make sure my hair is as moist as possible from conditioning , and I use a soap and glory serum as protection before using the hot brush.

Try switching to gentle -non sls- shampoo and have a break from blow-drying. My hair was exactly like yours as a kid as my mum used harsh shampoos on it then blow dried it whilst brushing it with a bristle brush Shock

I switched to using non sls-, no paraben, no silicone etc. shampoo and conditioner, combing the conditioner through before rinsing. Then when I get out of the shower I wrap hair in a smooth cotton towel for ten minutes to start drying, then use boots curl creme (tiny amount, also combed through) to tame any remaining frizz. Then I leave it to dry naturally.

Colour Wow Supernatural Dreamcoat. £24 a bottle from Amazon. If you Google around you might find a sample size to try for about £12 online.

I have hair as pouffy and bushy as yours, trust me this stuff is gold! And I've tried every smoothing, de-frizzing and flattening product available over the years, including morrocan oil.

Dreamcoat essentially coats your hair with silicone, and you have to use heat to seal it (and flatten the cuticle) - so you spray it on towel dried hair, without any other products at all, and then blow dry with a brush (you don't need to be an expert in blow drying straight, you're just pulling some weight though the lengths and angling the nozzle straight down the hair shaft - I do it fairly cack-handed and it still works).

It may still look pouffy when dry, but it should feel lovely and silky - run the GHDs through it, boom, smooth and glossy! The downsides are that it does build up on your hair, so only use it every other wash and invest in a good clarifying shampoo to clear it every 3rd week or so and start over - otherwise it starts feeling sticky and dull. I use Toni & Guy Detoxifying shampoo.

If you've got £200 to spare, you could always have a salon keratin treatment (see pic of my hair, that was my before and after) - but it's high maintenance and only lasts 2-3 months. That's why I just use Dreamcoat now, it's way cheaper with just a little more effort required!

Please get a GHD Glide. Its a 2 minute job and my hair has become much calmer and sifter generally. It's absolutely incredible

OvalCanvas · 17/01/2020 03:30

@Avelinebread a glide is on my shopping list , am currently using a babyliss straightening brush.

WhoisitnowRalph · 17/01/2020 03:36

Ooh I didn't know GHD made one of these... I'm often eyeing up the straightening brushes but thought they were a gimmick and I may as well stick to straighteners. Is it any better or faster?

userxx · 17/01/2020 03:43

How have I not seen this before?

Blossom4538 · 17/01/2020 16:25

Fab thank you so much. I have tried every oil it seems, don’t always use heat and protect if I do. I use high quality products - but my hair is crazy. If I let it dry naturally it goes big and slightly curly and wavy in places.

I’d love a keratin treatment but may try dreamcoat. Also get cut every 8 weeks or so but perhaps could do with it shorter.

I use semi-permanent hair colour at home for greys too, although wears off pretty quickly

Ghd glide looks good!

Tried an elasticiser? Tried the Philip kingsley(?) one in a sample box and it was magic!

Rastamousehat · 17/01/2020 16:43

I have bushy hair . I use a hair mask once a week and Moroccan oil after each wash and kukui oil in between washes. I mostly let it dry naturally (its elbow length so pretty long, and quite thick) but recently found it seems far more manageable when I partially dry it with a hair dryer.

OvalCanvas · 17/01/2020 17:56

Have you considered the curly girl method op?

ZaraW · 17/01/2020 18:29

Colour Wow worked well for a month or so but it made my hair so dry and unmanageable. I've been using the Steam Pod 3 and have good results.

oohnicevase · 17/01/2020 22:21

It's probably curly .. have you tried any product and diffusing ? Mine is super curly but looks like that if I brush and don't add product

Blossom4538 · 17/01/2020 23:09

Perhaps I should try! I don’t have a diffuser end on my current drier. I think it probably is a little curly. Any product recommended for this? I guess I need to heat protect too.

Is the curly girl method where you wash using only conditioner. I sometimes do a few washes like this?

OP posts:
oohnicevase · 17/01/2020 23:15

Don't worry too much , just bung some curl creme I b wet hair and then diffuse .. honestly my hair would be shit without curl creme and my diffuser and yet it gets compliments wherever I go .

oohnicevase · 17/01/2020 23:16

This is my hair post diffusing

GreenTulips · 17/01/2020 23:20

Have you tried using the hairdryer after you’ve used the straighteners?

Dry straighten Dry?

WiciousLittleFerret · 17/01/2020 23:38

Which curl cream do you use ooh? Oohnicehair 😁

OvalCanvas · 17/01/2020 23:44

@Blossom4538 that's a part of the cg method , yes. Other parts include using sls free products , only detangling when wet and really just using moisture to maximise curl/wave and definition.

The reason I mention it is because frizz and dryness can sometimes be down to having curly hair that's not treated as such. Cg can be very 'marmite' though so watching some YouTube videos might help you decide if it's for you.

Cuddling57 · 17/01/2020 23:54

So many suggestions!
My hair looks worse with non silicone shampoo and conditioner though.

WhoisitnowRalph · 18/01/2020 07:42

I did try CG myself - my hair is definitely curly - but had poor results so abandoned it after 6 months. I looked like a scarecrow, I couldn't take the humiliation anymore.
