Please excuse the frizzy haired photo! [Photo removed by MNHQ at request of OP]
I'm looking for recommendations to dye my hair at home, a semi permanent one I think. I have highlights that are growing out. I have naturally light brown hair.

Thanks so much

I've used Castings and Nice and Easy. Both are ok.
They fade gradually and I think you need to use a shampoo for coloured hair.

I think you would be the lightest of the nice and easy semi permanents (no ammonia) I think it is called dark blond. I will camouflage/blend it a little but probably won’t completed cover the highlights.

John Frieda - best I've ever used by miles and I've been home colouring my hair for 25 years

MikeUniformMike · 13/01/2020 21:40

Is John Frieda semi-permanent? I don't want to commit to a permanent colour.

Sorry I should know but I don't. I imagine it's supposed to be permanent but I've had to re-colour mine 2 months later so it's not that strong (I wouldn't go for a massive colour change though) I've just gone for my natural shade to cover greys but it's really shiny and glossy

I’ve used semi permanent colours for many years, but since using Casting regularly I find the colour does NOT wash out, it only grows out. It acts like a permanent dye on my hair. It’s also stained the hair shaft and is much darker than I want it, practically black at the ends. If I’d known that before, I would never have started using it. There are very limited choices in semi permanent colours these days - the ones I used to use aren’t made any more unfortunately, which is why I started using Casting. Beware!

DarklyDreamingDexter · 14/01/2020 00:47

By limited choices in semis I mean in alternative brands. There’s hundreds of colour variations, all by 2 or 3 main brands.

Can you get overtone in the UK? Everyone I know in the States uses it and it's AMAZING. It's a conditioner but teal lasted in my hair for ages.

Thanks everyone. Really appreciate your replies. I'm going to get the nice n easy dark blonde one as reccomend above. I'll also get a shampoo for coloured hair. Highlights have made my hair frizzy. Morrocan hair oil is my hero! Obviously not put any on before taking the photo for this Grin

Go a step further with shampoo and get a sulfate-free one. There are surprisingly few available and you'll have to scrutinise some bottles, but it is that ingredient which dries out hair. TKMaxx often have sulfate free shampoo and conditioner packs, and shampoo bars are generally sulfate free.

For really smooth hair which doesn't frizz up, you could always go for Kerstin treatment, aka Brazilian blow dry. I pay £80 for one every 6 months and my hair is much smoother and barely needs anything doing in the morning.

Belle colour or Nutrise by Garnier.

They are permanent but fade. Be careful of how dark some dark blondes are, especially the ashy ones.

Freshstart40 · 29/01/2020 08:09

Just a little update. I did the Nice n Easy Dark Blonde and really like it. No one noticed any difference which I guess is good. It definitely toned down my blonde.
I'm going to try number 75 next... light brown I think..

Thanks everyone

I use N&E 75, just to warn you it goes really dark if you leave it on for long...I do my greys around my face for 15-20 mins but for the rest I’ll only leave on for 10 mins or less. If it’s the Demi permanent one it does fade quickly after a few washes though.

Freshstart40 · 29/01/2020 11:30

Ah thanks for the tip @MolotovMocktail
