Eco-friendly deodorants

I am trying to be a bit more eco-friendly with my toiletries, specifically to reduce plastic consumption. I've been a long-time user of Sure roll on but as it's 100% plastic packing I need an alternative!

I saw the Salt of the Earth crystals in Boots today and was tempted but have my doubts that it will actually work.

Has anyone got any experience of it, or other eco-friendly, low plastic alternatives I could try? Without spending a fortune...

those crystals work, as they have the same active ingredients as other anti perspirants (aluminium salts)
no idea if they are ecological better.
some roll ons are in glass (nivea)
or just use less product? I use one of those 48 hour roll ons and only apply it every other day. obviously I shower in between.

I used Ben and Anna's for a long time (not crystal deodorant but natural) but when I went into stronger medication I wanted something a bit more similar to an antiperspirant so went onto a Bjork Crystal Deodorant Stick. They last for absolutely ages I get mine here www.babame.com/index/ref/64/ They also do lots of other eco friendly deodorants and toiletries too

Have you tried out whether you actually need deodorant? I find it makes little difference whether I use one or not on cooler days (I can smell my own sweat).

NannyR · 13/01/2020 16:01

The crystal deodorant works brilliantly for me - it doesn't stop me sweating but it stops all odour. Lasts for years too.

I swear by Lush Aromaco, only deo I've used in 20 years and it held up in 40 degree heat on my last trip to Oz. Comes 'naked' or wrapped in a sheet of grease proof paper, no plastic and can be recycled with your normal paper recycling.

@TooGood2BeTrue good point, I actually haven't. I am not a particularly sweaty person so it may be that I don't need something everyday.

Does the crystal one really last years?! Does it wear down with use or do you just keep using it?

It's also worth knowing that it takes a few weeks for your body to get used to the eco deodorants so don't give up for a few weeks. I use Ben and Anna and very happy with it. Was a bit sweaty for first 2 weeks though.

I use Warrior cream deodorant. I love it. I wash out the little tins after and use them for allotment seed storage.

Riv12345 · 13/01/2020 21:02

Please google Tropic skincare!!
Their antiperspirant/deodorant is the only deodorant I use.
It is 100% animal friendly
Vegan
With no hidden nasties, I cannot praise this enough, I work 12 hour shifts in a busy hospital, and my deodorant lasts all day, and I know it's not got any nasties in it, and is good for the planet.

I use native unearthed charcoal deodorant balm.

After being horribly sweaty whatever I used for years, I had a sample of this in my Birchbox. I was literally hooked from 1st use, it's a cream you rub in and you still sweat but there is literally no odour at all.

Indecisivelurcher · 13/01/2020 21:12

I would recommend ku.tis as being the best, and earth conscious is OK too. I didn't really like Ben & Anna, the actual product was too hard.

Beamur · 13/01/2020 21:15

You can make your own. Various recipes online.

EvaHarknessRose · 13/01/2020 21:17

I use Pitrok solid salt one (the spray one is pants). It takes weeks to start being effective but then bizarrely you can go ages between uses because you stop smelling.

Indecisivelurcher · 15/01/2020 09:15

Actually I've decided earth conscious is not very good, don't buy that!

lotusbell · 15/01/2020 21:31

Natural deodorant company are brilliant different scents, strengths and sizes. Last ages and actually work really well.

trashcansinatra · 15/01/2020 22:00

Crystal deodorants are good but check out nuud which is a cream. You use a tiny amount and it lasts up to 5 days. It's amazing. A tiny 15ml tube lasted me about 6 months. You might need a few days for your body to get used to it.

It's eco friendly. Tube is made of sugar cane, etc.

Diy. Coconut oil, Shea butter, bentonite clay and a few essential oils for fragrance.

snappycamper · 15/01/2020 22:22

The crystal ones really do work, would definitely recommend them. BUT, i had two salt of the earth ones where the packaging broke after a few weeks. Bought a faith in nature version which I've had for about 18m so far. Hasn't broken and doesn't appear to have shrunk through use yet.

When I feel like more scent I use neals yard coriander and lemon deodorant. It's a spray (not aerosol) in a glass bottle and smells gorgeous

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 17/01/2020 21:14

So, I bought the Salt of the Earth plastic free one from Boots and I have been wearing it today...and I feel and smell fresh as a daisy! However, the reason I chose today to try it was that I have been working from home. I have not even left the house so minimal opportunity to work up a sweat!
It does make me realise that I may not need deodorant every day...easy to get into the habit of slapping it on daily and some days it's probably not even needed.
I will carry on with the Salt of the Earth and see how I get one. I am planning a run on Sunday so we'll see how it holds up to that...
