Washing make up brushes in washing machine - Anyone tried it?

Just that really. My brushes definitely need doing and I'm just wondering if there is a quicker way of doing it rather than standing at the bowl doing each one individually.

DH suggested I just go out and buy new brushes but that is my preferred option wasteful and not in keeping with my Limited Spend 2020

Yep, I've done it several times on the quick cotton wash. Pop them into a pillowcase with a hair band tied around the end so they aren't all bashing around loose in the drum.

Brilliant thanks CalmFizz What (if any) detergent did you use?

I just throw in my regular surf capsule. Did it this morning again actually, they're laying on top of the radiator now drying out. I've done them about 6/7 times, eventually it's said not to be good as the glue will disintegrate but I haven't lost any brushes yet.

ZaraW · 13/01/2020 14:12

No I wouldn't do it, would probably weaken the glue and damage the brushes over time. It only takes a few minutes to wash them. Mine are expensive and I take care of them.

I wouldn’t do mainly for fear of damaging the machine. Washing make up brushes takes me a couple of minutes. All in one hand, under the tap, blob of baby shampoo, rinse, then into a mug of boiled water for a short time - leave on a towel/flannel to dry overnight.

Thanks all.

Get yourself a sytl pro, some deals on just now, the best invention every! I used mine to clean about 20 brushes, it cleans in no time and dries them too. I have cinema secrets ( i think) but you can also just use water with some antibacterial soap

Bananaman123 · 13/01/2020 20:15

Best deal

I use a Sigma cleansing mitt and Johnson's baby shampoo (it's anti bacterial). Flick water off and dry flat with the brush fibres sitting over the edge of a table.
Sigma is available at a few UK beauty sites:

I wouldn't put my brushes in a washing machine.

ElusiveOrangeTwirl · 13/01/2020 21:52

Olive oil and washing up liquid mixed together is the best I've tried so far.

Lanaa · 14/01/2020 05:41

I do it all the time, nothing gets them cleaner. I put them in an old pair of thick tights, tie a knot in the leg and then double it over. I always pop in a dark towel too so they don't bang about too much. 30 degree wash with a little Ariel gel and they come out perfect. I do all my beauty blenders in there too.

Yes some have lost their glue but the time saved is worth more than the cost of replacing brushes. I've managed to stick a couple back together with a glue gun too.

It only takes a few minutes to clean brushes by hand. My brushes have lasted ten years because I take care of them.

violetbunny · 14/01/2020 09:01

Nooooooo do not do this! Shock Oh the horror...

Properly looked after brushes should last a good number of years. Washing them in a machine weakens the glue in the ferrules, causing them to shed hair or loosen, as well as ruining the bristles.

Brushes should be washed by hand in lukewarm water with a gentle soap (eg baby shampoo). Only the bristles should get wet, never the ferrule. They should be dried flat, never standing up (again to avoid the ferrule ever getting wet).

They don't even need to be washed too often unless you're using them with liquids like foundation. I use a brush cleaning spray daily after use and then only wash with water every couple of weeks or as needed.

Again, thanks everyone for all your replies. I think I will try my older ones, that could probably do with replacing TBH, in the washing machine and see how they come up, but my newer Real Techniques ones I will do by hand.

This thread reminded me to do mine. Took five minutes with make up cleaner and a plastic makeup brush cleaner.
Thanks op!

Wash your brushes with a mix of shampoo and water and rinse. Job done
