Struggling with No/Low Buy whilst having clear focused style

So I set a no buy for fashion until April but I'm struggling. Not bought anything yet but I've got my eye on a few things that I have gaps in my wardrobe for and I know I will wear to death plus they make my heart flutter!! I have a very set look for each season - usually a big wool wrap coat over skinnies with cowboy style or distressed style boots - kind of All Saints look and then spring, I switch the coats out for stuctured blazers and the warm boots out for cut out booties. I also love camis and baggy v necked assymetric jumpers.

So of course I've seen 2 gorgeous blazers on sale (1 grey, 1tan) and some booties that I am literally salivating over and the prices are amazing and I will wear them to death come March/April. Anyone else in this predicament?

If they’ll slot into your wardrobe, you love them and you’ll get good wear out of them I’d buy them if you can afford to. It doesn’t sound like they’re impulse buys but things that you’ll have a long time.

I wanted to do a low spend year but I realised I’m going to need trousers come summer as my current summer stuff is starting to look past it’s best.

Fatted · 12/01/2020 08:58

Why did you set yourself a no buy in the first place? I think you need to remind yourself why you decided not to do it in the first place.

HelloDulling · 12/01/2020 09:00

If that is your look, surely you have those things already? Blazers and boots, I mean.

RedLemon · 12/01/2020 09:08

I’m trying no buy till Spring (haven’t defined when that is exactly!) because I seem to make “just this one more essential item and then I’m definitely done” purchases every few weeks.

I’m planning on pulling out everything I own and looking at it all to see if I can make some “new” outfits- different combinations, adding existing belts, scarves, layering things differently.

Like you I could pop online and find 3-4 items right now that I could convince myself would be wardrobe staples but the point of this exercise is to RESIST!

Fashion is way too wasteful and online shopping way too easy. Think if the money you’ll save and think of the planet!

Thanks for this post. It has refocused my mind!! Good luck and STAND FIRM. CAPS KEEP US STRONG!! ✊🏻

RandomMess · 12/01/2020 09:13

Surely if you have a very defined look you have these things from previous years??

Summerhillsquare · 12/01/2020 10:13

Surely Low buy means its OK to buy stuff that will last for years and be much used? The problem with fast fashion is poor qaulity/little worn stuff. Buy less but better quality.

JMAngel1 · 12/01/2020 11:29

Love the CAPS!
I'm not in debt but would like to save more and also spend less time browser shopping so I can be more productive in general.
I always need to replace boots and booties each year - no matter what I spend on them in terms of quality, by the end of tbe season tgey are battered, heels scraped, suede stained etc.

Also re blazers, I've been lifting weights and my arns are a bit too snug in last years blazers - this is a good thing as I can veer towards puny!

I can resist all the high fashion looks no problem, it's just these core pieces that are killing me that I know will form the basis of my spring wardrobe and my fear is that come April, I won't be able to find anything as "me".
Right off to the gym to stop me looking at them!

Low spend is not no spend...if you have found two perfect pieces that will form the basis for your spring/summer looks then getting them when they’re cheaper is obviously ideal and fits nicely into a low spend strategy. Just make sure you don’t keep finding more perfect pieces every month!

fromcitytocountry · 12/01/2020 15:51

Can you share a pic of the booties you're looking at 🙂🙂 in desperate need of some and can't find any I like.

PS...totally buy stuff if it will fit within your current wardrobe and get lots of wear

It's these, not that I'm enabling! I love Vince Camuto.
Hope the link works

You’d better be sure you don’t want them because items linked to on S&B tend to sell out!

Tbh in your shoes (har har) I’d have said spend now while the sales are on and then do your low/no spend April to August.

JMAngel1 · 12/01/2020 18:22

Now you've got me sweatin' Ninkanik!!!!

Ninkanink · 12/01/2020 18:34

I don't subscribe to total no spending because I find it just makes me crave whatever I've forbidden myself even more, and often ends in poor purchases as soon as the ban is lifted. Thoughtful moderation and buying second hand whenever I can works much better for me and, in the long term, saves me money.

From what you've said, and assuming you can afford them, they sound like good purchases (very nice boots!). If you donate or sell the items that no longer fit well then someone else will get to enjoy them too.
