Should I go blonde as a usual brunette?

I was blonde up until I was about 12 and then it started to go dark and my eyebrows are black so I’ve had it light brown, dark brown/black/red hair for the past 20 years and I’ve been dying it that long.

I got my hair bleached in 1999 and the hairdresser was a crap one and the condition of my hair was brutal due to the bleach but I’m wondering if things have ‘came on’ a bit in the respect that going blonde wouldn’t change the condition of it, I would say I have normal to dry hair but I’m a huge user of hair straighteners and I need a change, new year, new hair.

Has anyone went blonde from dark recently and if so how did it turn out?

I'm naturally dark brown but have been light warm blond for 30 years. I use L'Oréal light golden blond age perfect and then when washed I paint freehand blond balayage on top. This has always worked for me. Hair always been in good condition. It does depend upon the individual though.

Would you try balayage? Then you can stop bleaching much faster if it doesn’t work out.

I’m actually red at the moment and there is no way I can do it myself to blonde and anytime I have went blonde with home dyes then it goes that disgusting yellow brassy blonde, and my natural colour is mousey brown to dark brown and I would have to go back to natural first, the red has dried it out, well it’s meant to be violet plum-ish but these vibrant colours don’t last even with colour saver shampoo and conditioner.

Get an Olaplex balayage. Game changer.

Inappropriatefemale · 12/01/2020 04:38

Can I ask what one of them is @Joloh? I’ve never heard of this!

It's a chemical your hairdresser mixes in with the bleach that stops the bonds breaking. labmuffin.com/how-does-olaplex-hair-treatment-work/

Ahh so if I get it done at the hairdressers then they will most likely use this?

You will have to ask for it. They don't all do it. (They should!)

Inappropriatefemale · 12/01/2020 05:28

Bloody right they should!

I want a dirty blonde type of colour, maybe with a few different tones of blonde, I just need a change!

Yes I use olaplex ( look fantastic and all beauty sell the home care range too so you can start working on the condition now with number 3,4&5 ) am dark brown and go quite a light blonde. My hairdresser Also uses a toner bleach on me too which also helps to keep the processing time down.

Luckyonetwo · 12/01/2020 06:26

Just seen the dirty blonde comment that’s my colour and I have it done with fine blonde And dark highlights it has taken 2/3 goes to fully get there as but I have always bleached my hair lighter so had a head start with it.

ReginaGeorgeous · 12/01/2020 11:40

I've got naturally very dark brown hair but a significant amount of grey so I've been having it highlighted and going lighter for the last few years and the bleach hasn't wrecked my hair. In fact it's in much better condition than when I was using brien box dyes.

If your currently red, be aware that it might take a few appointments to get to your desired shade and it might be quite brassy/orangey at first. You have to trust the process and persevere!

ReginaGeorgeous · 12/01/2020 11:41

That should say brown box dyes.

Inappropriatefemale · 12/01/2020 14:51

Apparently blonde hides grey better and this is beginning to be an issue for me unfortunately.
