Any jewellers?? Help with ring size mystery

I damaged an enamelled ring to the point it couldn’t be reshaped . The shop I bought it from offered to make me a new one at half price. I live the other end of the country to the shop , so I went into a local jewellery shop and asked them to measure my finger. They said I was an M. The old ring went off in the post and the new one turned up. It was far far too small. I presumed the local shop had made a mistake . The ring shop were very good about it and offered to change it . I went to a different jewellery shop and they told me I was N and a half. As I left the shop the man said~ that’s finger size by the way.
So then I measured my finger size in mm - 65mm. I look this up and it says that makes me size W. I call the ring shop who agree the mm size suggests I am a W and have no explanation as to why two different shops have measured me M/N. Are there two scales??

M is W upside down. Could it be that?

Cathpot · 11/01/2020 09:11

I thought that but then second shop measured me N and a half!

A W is enormous compared to an M though, isn’t it?

Go to another jeweller.

MotherOfDragonite · 11/01/2020 09:14

W is huge in terms of ring sizes. I'd be very surprised if it was a W.

All you need is to go into a jewellers who have a measuring tool with lots of rings on it. You can try them on and get exactly the right size for the finger you want the ring to do it. I wouldn't measure it yourself and go by that.

GinaCarbonara · 11/01/2020 09:16

I'm a P/Q and my chubby sausage fingers are huge! You can't be a W surely?

KittenVsBox · 11/01/2020 09:23

65mm finger size? That over 6cm. What are you measuring?

Mouthfulofquiz · 11/01/2020 09:34

I have a jeweller’a ring sizer at home - a W is huge. I mean like comically huge.

Cathpot · 11/01/2020 09:38

I’ve just done it again as I was doubting myself - piece of paper around the base of my ring finger and then measured it- if I pull it really tight it’s 62mm. I do have big hands but not abnormally so . I take a large washing up glove for instance ! In the shop he had a tray of plain bands to try on and that’s when he said I was a N and a half. I’m running out of shops to go to as I feel bad asking them to help me when I’m not buying from them. I think I need to take the small ring in somewhere and see what size they think it is

When you say you measured your finger size and got 65mm, did you measure the length or the circumference? Very few women would be a size W, it’s huge.

Cathpot · 11/01/2020 09:44

What I may be learning here is I have freakishly large fingers. It’s 60mm or so circumference not diameter could that be the issue? Diameter is 20mm

I think you’re going to have to post a photo of your hand...

Cathpot · 11/01/2020 10:05

I just laughed at that suggestion.
Then took a photo of my hand.
My hand in the photo looks about 75. I am not 75.
I may have to take up wearing , enormous , gloves

yogo · 11/01/2020 10:47

W is huge.

GooodMythicalMorning · 11/01/2020 10:52

seconding W is absolutely huge! Used to work in a jewellers and the biggest size we did was a T and that was far and few.

Neptunesgiraffe · 11/01/2020 11:01

I've had a very similar experience recently when I measured my third finger for a cheapish ring from amazon. According to the general ring charts I found online I would also be a W. Which sounds crazy!! Since I fit most medium or large rings at Tesco, I know there is something lost in translation. I know that the US measures differently and lots of other European countries seem to measure circumference in mm. So I presume that the measurement is diameter in the uk but I can't say for certain.
Btw, the ring I wanted to buy online came in S, M, L, XL and I recklessly ordered the L. When it came it fitted, and might have been very slightly too big as I lost it within a week.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/01/2020 11:49

I find the same, different ring size in different jewellers, they don't seem to be a standard size at all.

purplecorkheart · 11/01/2020 11:57

I am a p in rings and find it hard enough to get rings big enough. I wouldn't think you are a T. Could you buy a ring measure on ebay. I bought one for a matter of pence and then resold it.

Cathpot · 11/01/2020 12:18

What’s really odd is that both jewellery shops measured me at M/N size using physical rings, which doesn't tally with mm charts on line ( which are saying W) , and when I ordered an M ring, it was tiny!

OP posts:
Cookit · 11/01/2020 14:12

Did you take the small ring in to these shops? Maybe the small ring isn’t actually an M?

Cookit · 11/01/2020 14:18

Btw I tried measuring my own finger and got it very wrong.. no idea how I found it so hard..
When ordering my wedding ring I realised I didn’t know my ring size so had a go with a piece of paper and measuring it. Anyway my measurements put me at a P or so which I was pretty surprised at as I have fairly thin-normal fingers. When I got measured properly at the jewellers I was a J.

My money is on you being an M or N but the ring having been re-sized incorrectly.

I've had this problem. Went to 4 different jewellers and got a different size each timeConfused My problem was my knuckle. The base of my finger was smaller than my knuckle. Eventually I just took an average from the sizes I was given and when I got my ring back it fittedSmile A tip I was given was to send a cheap costume jewellery ring that fits well to the jeweller. Then they can go by that size. I don't wear alot of jewellery so didn't try this but might be worth a shot if your not sure.

Cathpot · 11/01/2020 15:37

Right- good ideas thanks- I’m going to take the new ring in and see if it is actually an M , and then get a very cheap ring that fits and send that off with ring to be resized.

GooodMythicalMorning · 11/01/2020 16:14

yes big knuckles can affect it, and rings can be differently shaped (hollow backed if there is a stone or rounded sides which also affects fit.

fishonabicycle · 11/01/2020 17:00

62mm? Jeez. Even my plumber husband's sausage fingers are a lot smaller than that
