Black jeans question

OatcakeCravings · 10/01/2020 20:25

Ok, this is maybe going to sound stupid but if I am buying a pair of black jeans should I size up? So buy a 14 instead of a 12? I haven’t bought a pair of black jeans for about 20 years but for some reason I’m my head I’m sure I used to get them in a bigger size.

Oh and I online shop so I don’t have to go to the shops and try stuff on, hence the asking!

Thanks

No? Why would you? They're the same as blue jeans just in another colour ...

EmmaC78 · 10/01/2020 21:54

Depends on the brand. I wouldlookat themeasurement guide for the brand you are interested in and go for that. Brands can vary quite a lot size wise.

The dying process shrinks them apparently, so they likely will be a tighter fit than blue jeans.

Hoppinggreen · 10/01/2020 22:19

I’ve got 3 pairs of black jeans, all in my normal size

gh621 · 10/01/2020 22:32

I have never heard of this. I have black jeans in the same size as my blue jeans. Would appreciate some tips on keeping them black and stopping them fading so quickly?

Denim is dyed before the cutting process, so it makes no difference.

GH ime - wash them inside out and use a detergent designed for colours and not whites.

I’ve just bought a pair of black Levi’s, the exact same style and size as my trusty blue ones.....they feel marginally tighter, but that could just be because they’re new, or because there are always small variations between different pairs regardless of colour.
The difference is marginal though, and a bigger size would be too big.

I have always found this to be the case with Levi's and Land's End jeans. Just a bit more snug and one size up would be too big.

Sparkesy · 10/01/2020 22:55

I have found this too with a couple of different brands of jeans- same jeans in black can sometimes be a little smaller than a blue denim, almost as if there is less 'stretch' in them. I always try the 2 sizes now just in case.

BackforGood · 10/01/2020 23:34

Never heard of this.
Can't believe that colour would make a difference.
I mean, different brands and different styles can fit differently, but colour doesn't make a difference.
(Am wearing black jeans now as it happens)

TheCoolerQueen · 11/01/2020 08:24

I've found a difference with black clothes, jeans and also a brand of bras that I wear regularly. It's a very subtle difference so I don't buy a size up.

Mamia15 · 11/01/2020 08:37

Black jeans are less stretchy than denim blue jeans - so will the fit will feel different.

I always wash them inside out to preserve the dye - and to minimise fading I try get as much wear before finally washing these ie I take them off as soon as I get home to keep them clean.

caulkheaded · 11/01/2020 08:44

I think it depends on the cut. My black jeans are slightly less stretchy than blue jeans so if you’re buying jeggings you might need to try a few pairs. I think they also return to the right size quicker too whereas blue ones sometimes stay baggy?
It’s definitely not a one size larger difference though.

adagio · 11/01/2020 08:48

I never heard this before. I like m&s jeans and jeggings - normal size for me (12) and cheap enough to replace when they change colour or change shape.
I ride a bike to work though which does seem to be a bit harder on the knee area (this year I’ve decided to stop the rigmarole of shower and change at work during the winter. It’s so cold I don’t get warm enough to sweat anyway Grin).

RoomR0613 · 11/01/2020 09:11

My black Next Slim and Shape jeans have never faded and are very forgiving.

They do have a habit of wearing a hole between the legs in the chub rub area though after about a year. I've never had this happen with any other trousers ever but it's happened 3 times with these jeans.

fedup21 · 11/01/2020 09:17

I can’t imagine buying jeans without going to the shop to try them on-Jean shopping is a huge ordeal tbh, as soon as I find jeans I like, they seem to get discontinued!

I have never bought black jeans in a different size though and have never heard that as a ‘thing’.

Hoppinggreen · 11/01/2020 11:00

As for fading I chuck mine in a washing machine with a pa key of Dylon twice a year

Hoppinggreen · 11/01/2020 11:01

Packet

Does anyone else find black jeans have a smell to them that blue jeans just don’t have? I love the look of them but every pair I’ve ever had has that horrible ‘black dye’ smell.
It fades after a while but returns when they are wet. Tried all sorts of washing powders and vinegar rinses etc but the smell never completely disappears. I do have a cheap pair (primark I think) that are in an acid wash black that are ok and don’t smell but I would love a proper black pair.
