Hair straighteners - what should I buy?!

My birthday is coming up and I'm looking into some hair straighteners after not having owned any for years, but there are so many on the market that I don't know where to start.

What I need is:

  • If possible, something quite kind on the hair and won't damage it too much.
  • Something that I can also use to curl my hair i.e with round edges.
  • Budget is probably up to £40

If relevant:

  • My hair is quite long and thin, natural colour, a bit wavy when left to dry naturally and is prone to frizz.

I'm not looking for anything high-end, just a mid-range product that'll do the job without frying my hair.

Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

I use a hot brush instead of a metal straightener. It's brilliant and doesn't damage my hair at all.

Yikes. Sorry about the long link.

If you are looking for a hair friendly product what about the revlon one step hair dryer and volumiser. It straightens my fine curly hair with out frying it like my Ghds do.

My hair seems in much better condition since using it and it gives my hair more oomph! Although it wouldn’t be so good if you want a poker straight look which you would achieve with straighteners. Also dries my hair really quickly and is so easy to use.

Wouldn’t be without it now! Absolutely love it.

Aquamarine1029 I've seen those before and have been intrigued, but I don't think it would work for me because I'm looking to curl my hair as well. I know you can curl hair as well as straighten with GHD's, but I just don't have the budget for that, unfortunately.

If you want straighteners then go for cloud 9 over GHD's. If they're a bit pricey then try eBay! I've bought them there!!

ari11 I actually already have one of those and I do like it but it just doesn't do what I want to my hair. I've got quite long hair but I don't really do anything to it apart from dry it with a hairdryer and I figure there's no point in having long hair and not doing anything to it. I'm looking for something to straighten my hair but also to curl it, to give me beach waves etc.

I bought reconditioned ghd s for £40 from an online shop - couldn't tell they were second hand. They work perfectly and look fine. Electrics guaranteed etc. Maybe look into that?

In my experience Remington straighteners are just as good as GHD's - although admittedly I haven't used GHD's for about 10 years. I think my current ones are the Remington Pearl which were about £40 - variable temperature and they came with heat mat/case. I use them pretty much every day and for the price think they're great.

I have the Remington smooth and sleek ones that I bought from Amazon when they were reduced to £16. I wasn't expecting great things but they are fantastic, better than my old GHDs. I have long thick hair and they are great for straightening and curling.

WalkAwaySugarBear That sounds quite interesting, I may look into getting those, thank you!

WalkAwaySugarBear Are these the ones? I can't find any under the same name.

Those are the ones Blackbird. As my hair is so thick I have to use the highest temperature 230° but it works on thinner hair at a lower temperature, 190°.
Added bonus, it works abroad too.
