Classy Knitted Jumpers

Now I am no longer considered a ‘young person’ I have decided that I need to stop buying several new knitted jumpers each year from H&M which inevitably bobble and wear out under the arms. Instead, I want to buy some quality, timeless jumpers that you see women wearing - you know the type, a simple loose fitting shape, with a round neck and generally worn with a nice scarf and necklace (though I probably wouldn’t). Does anyone know where one would purchase these?

I realise that, in my mid-thirties, this makes me sound old before my time but after buying the same style jumper for the third year in a row I just think I need to invest in some with more longevity!

I don’t know but I would like to!

Uniqlo is good for basics, especially their merino wool ones. They do a range of neck shapes. I struggle with finding anything a bit less plain though.

I love Jigsaw for knitwear and I also had a lovely jumper this year from Sezane. Also have a look at Cos and Whistles.

Today I’m wearing a merino wool jumper from Hobbs (which admittedly I got in a charity shop). It’s my absolute favourite jumper, it’s warm, got a smooth, almost silky texture and never bobbles. I expect it was expensive when it was first bought, but it’s the sort of thing that as long you’re careful when you wash it will last for years.

John Smedley knitwear is as good as you can buy. Their outlet shop is here:

You'll find more winter stuff in summer and vice versa, for obvious reasons. They also have a small factory shop in Derbyshire which has amazing bargains.

I have started buying 'higher end' jumpers in the hope they last longer but in actual fact anything made with real wool tends to bobble very quickly and doesn't always stay looking particularly good for very long.
My best jumpers have been cashmere from Woolovers and knitwear from Allsaints also seems to be good quality. I have a lovely Toast jumper which is pure wool and while it's very nice it has bobbled and looks worn, I've only had it 6 months.
I would love to know if anyone has found decent quality wool/merino jumpers that have stayed looking nice and not bobbled excessively.

Phase eight jumpers are lovely- feel good quality and don’t bobble.

I bought a Geelong wool one from Celtic and Co this Christmas, navy, longline, loose fit. It's incredibly warm and soft, just so, so comforting to wear. I love it and crave another but can't justify the price in January 😥

Woolovers

Go natural and use a jumper comb to remove pils.

Geoffreythecat · 06/01/2020 10:43

It's funny how we all have different experiences, my Woolovers cardi bobbled terribly and I threw it away. Maybe it was the fabric?

hammeringinmyhead · 06/01/2020 10:44

I've started buying cotton ones. I'm wearing one from Cotton Traders today and got my mum one from La Redoute for Christmas.

viccat · 06/01/2020 10:44

Merino is the best for not bobbling. Pretty much everything else does, although it will improve after a while and happen less. Get a wool comb thing to remove the bobbles.

HRH2020 · 06/01/2020 11:00

Definitely Sézane their jumpers and cardis are so soft and last very well.

astralweaks · 06/01/2020 11:05

Uniqlo’s merino wool never bobbles. Plain but classy.

astralweaks · 06/01/2020 11:06

Cotton with cashmere is also good although merino is by far the best. Some cashmere is fine, too.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 06/01/2020 11:09

Harley of Scotland - the wool is so soft! I think Bosie are their trade name.

bananahood · 06/01/2020 11:13

Another recommendation for Uniqlo, particularly the merino. I have one of their cardigans and it looks fab, I bought it 2+ years ago and wear it several times a week, cost per wear will be minuscule. I have a few jumpers from Cos which wash and wear well too. Also a John Lewis cashmere cardigan which I splurged on and love.

baileysandamincepie · 06/01/2020 12:37

Spending money is definitely no guarantee of quality or longevity. Some of the worst wearing jumpers I've ever had have come from Chinti and Parker and Bella Freud.

Best has been Celtic and Co by a mile.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 06/01/2020 13:27

I'd love to know too OP. I have an added complication that I can't wear wool of any kind, including cashmere, angora and alpaca. The Woolovers cotton/silk knitwear bobbles, fades and looks like a rag after a few washes.

MulberryPeony · 06/01/2020 16:30

Another vote for uniqlo merino. A full years use and they look just as good as when I bought them. Excellent value for money.

clippityclop · 06/01/2020 21:31

Uniqlo merino. I also bought two cotton v neck jumpers from M&S menswear sale recently and they're great.

If you want really classy but of a vintage style, check out Betty Sparkles Emporium, on Instagram or on Etsy. Utterly gorgeous knitwear.
