Has anyone successfully whitened sensitive teeth?

I have tried every single OTC and online whitening things and they haven’t really worked. Couple years ago I went to the dentist and they have two options, one you do at home every day overnight and one you sit there and it’s done. Dentist said do at home as teeth are sensitive. Trouble is after a few days my teeth are so sensitive and it hurts so I have to stop or have a break. Trouble is the stuff is only ‘valid’ for one month and can’t use it after that so they never get white white.

I did see an improvement when I first did it but it didn’t last long. I’m tempted to go back to dentist and fork out for the one where you do it there... before dentist advised she home.... but if I’m doing it at home and it hurts.... over a long time.... isn’t it better to do at dentist and put up with it a short while??

I don’t know what else to do... they aren’t horrific but need doing!

What did your dentist say about whitening your teeth? It would cost £150-£300 but probably worth it for you.

Wonderingwhyme · 07/01/2020 19:30

Yeah a few hundred but he said this would be better due to my sensitivity? I think I will see what this one is like and then go back to them if I’m not happy. Currently have it in now for 3 hours.::

Yeah when I get the gel on mine the sensitivity can be really bad but it only lasts a few seconds but then my teeth weren’t sensitive in first place.

I think it’s worth it for you to feel better, beauty is pain and all thatSmile

Wonderingwhyme · 07/01/2020 19:56

I was just looking at the instructions and it says a 2.5 syringue is enough for 3 goes (too and bottom) but the amount the dentist showed me it lasts loads more than 3. Is that a bad thing??

The trays are so achy!!! Have only ever worn them at night with no problem but my god! 2 hours in and I’m ready to rip them out!

I would wear the mouth guard and put the treatment gel in their and then use the little LED lamp, they’re like £20 on Amazon.

I also use a tooth whitening gel from Amazon and use the mouth guard with the lamp at my teeth for half an hour and what a difference!

Inappropriatefemale · 07/01/2020 20:17

There not their

OhioOhioOhio · 07/01/2020 20:22

Omg. Is it that bad?

Wonderingwhyme · 07/01/2020 20:29

What would a light do? Why don’t dentists recommend that?

@OhioOhioOhio doesn’t hurt everyone, my teeth are very sensitive!

OP posts:
Wonderingwhyme · 07/01/2020 20:45

Strange, have taken them out and the gel doesn’t taste of anything! The 10% was minty.

Can anyone tell me how much they put in on each tooth of the zoom?

OP posts:
Inappropriatefemale · 07/01/2020 20:49

The led light speeds up the reaction of the gel on your teeth.

No the dentist wouldn’t recommend but they don’t even like whitening teeth and whitening your teeth twice a year isn’t going to hurt as much as all the crappy toothpastes that your dentist told you were bad.

I think the dentist may be against the light because it’s faster, I wouldn’t necessarily listen to him about whitening, I was going to get mines done at the dentist (until I found out that she was only going to use 6% and it would’ve cost me £150) but she didn’t want too do it even after her lecture abt smoking etc etc, her lectures to me got so bad that I started to get anxious before I went to see her that I changed dentist, even the doctor doesn’t go on at me about smoking and I hate people going on at me about it, I smoke and that’s that!

Inappropriatefemale · 07/01/2020 20:56

I know me saying don’t listen to your dentist about whitening sounds like stupid advice but because dentists don’t like whitening teeth (they shouldn’t offer it if they don’t like it) then they will advise against, maybe ask him about it and ask him why 35% is okay in the US but not here?

granadagirl · 07/01/2020 21:10

I’ve got sensitive teeth. WS told by dentist to leave in overnight!
After couple night at 10% on 3rd night I kept waking with aching teeth
The next morning oh my god I’ve never had aching teeth like it all day. Felt so ill
I used ibuprofen(better than paracetamol)

Rang dentist he told me to just leave in during evening for couple hours
After that put sensodyne toothpaste on them

Much better this way, even when I went up to 16%

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 07/01/2020 22:01

No advice, but I have sensitive teeth, and just put up with yellow teeth...

Can't hack the pain!

earsup · 08/01/2020 00:17

If the gel contains peroxide, what stops people just getting 40 volume from superdrug or sallys for a few quid..??..!!...I had lazer whitening done in colombia...mouth and gums got very hot...was uncomfortable...cost me about 30 quid...teeth looked very white afterwards.

Inappropriatefemale · 08/01/2020 00:39

40% in Superdrug etc? Because this is illegal in the UK!

Inappropriatefemale · 08/01/2020 00:39

I had zero pain or heat when I got mines done, we’re all different

Inappropriatefemale · 08/01/2020 00:40

The bleach has to be for teeth, not just for anything!!

Wonderingwhyme · 08/01/2020 06:20

I’m going to do 16% 3 hours in eve every other night this week and see how it goes. If pain is ok I will do every evening next week.... they don’t ever get hot, gums are fine but yes achy painful teeth! Hurts and makes me constantly want to hold them!

Hi OP! Sorry I never got back to you. There's quite a lot of misinformation going on.

There's no need to use 35% bleach. 16% will get you to the same level of whiteness as 35, and it's legal. Never do whitening that's not purchased by your dentist, it's potentially very dangerous. There's a reason the law is what it is in the uk. Even 6% will get you to the same level it just takes longer.

The nite zoom is fine to use for 3 hrs, I use night. 1/3 of a syringe should do a full tray. Make sure to use a cotton bud or your finger around the edge of your tray to remove excess bleach so it's not sitting on your gums. Are you trays a good fit? Do they ache without the bleach in?

Whitening toothpastes are abrasive and damage your teeth. They also don't whiten your teeth, they are designed to remove surface stain but in the long run will brush away the enamel revealing the yellow dentine beneath.

Dentists do not have a problem with whitening teeth as long as it is properly done. The lights purchased online do bugger all. Please listen to your dentist!

Think about it. If dentists didn't like whitening firstly there's probably a reason - so listen to them. Secondly why would they do it?

Inappropriatefemale · 08/01/2020 11:21

My dentist told me that she hates whitening teeth because it ruins the enamel so different dentists will be different.

I disagree with you about the lamp and 16% may get you there the same as 35% but how many times would the OP have to use 16% compared to how many times they would have to use 35%?

Wonderingwhyme · 08/01/2020 11:34

@BlueCornsihPixie thanks for coming back. Not so much achy just annoying? That was at 2 hours though. It might just be as I normally had them in at night so didn’t notice? I’m concerned about how much to put in? Dentist showed me literally a blob probably not much bigger than the end of the nib on a biro? So very small in the middle of the tooth area of each section on the trays? But third of a tray in one go is loads more than I use?? When I first did this two years ago I found it didn’t whiten the area closest to my gums. I also noticed the same a couple of months back when I re purchased the 10% as they had reverted back to what they were originally. Dentist said do small bit at each edge of the tray.... I don’t know what to do? If I put loads more in won’t it be more likely to hurt? Has he told me the incorrect amount all these years?

Or you could just accept the natural colour of your teeth

DickDewy · 08/01/2020 11:39

I used the Enlighten System which comes with desensitising swabs.

I actually then went on to buy 35% gel on the internet which works so much better.
