I need some new clothes but don't know where to start (plus size)

I'm nearly 40, I'm a stay at home mum of older kids, I'm about 5ft4, size 20 ish, giant (but not awful) boobs, big bum and fat legs. I do have a bit of a waist. I live in leggings with a patterned, jersey, v neck dress with a vest top under to cover a bit of cleavage. I feel like I have a uniform, all interchangeable and boring.
Can anyone suggest alternatives? I feel enormous in jeans and trousers and my thighs are huge, what do other people wear day to day?

What sort of styles do you like?
Do you follow any fatshion blogs.plus size women on instagram whose style you like?

Boohoo is great for plus size

StCharlotte · 06/01/2020 21:42

Violetta by Mango (plus size range) has some lovely things and not too pricey.

Coated leather look leggings ?

Midi dresses?

I'm a similar size. I wear wide leg trousers or culottes with fine knit sweaters or decent quality t shirts. I have a nice blazer and a biker jacket to go with them. I wear brogues with trousers and boots or leather converse style flats with culottes. Also wear midi dresses with boots.i heartily recommend snag tights!

I'm also large of breast and find that a long necklace creates an artificial v neck which divides the 'wall of boob' look you can get with some tops. Also get a properly fitting bra. Don't go to M&S but try looking up the 'Boob is bust' page on Facebook.

I second the Violetta suggestion and also buy lots of stuff in Sainsbury's. Sometimes get basics in M&S. Duo is good for boots but I have had some nice boots from marisota which came in different calf sizes.

I tend to avoid the plus side retailers as they seem to assume you are 5ft 10 and want a tent to wear. The upper ends of the 'normal' ranges are often better cut.

Sorry for the lack of paragraphs above. I put them in and the app just deletes them.

We sound similar. I do love jeans though. My day to day winter outfits are either jeans, top & jacket/cardigan or a dress & tights. I shop a lot at asos, h&m, boohoo, next, oasis.

I have my own style but I'm definitely not trendy. I like to be comfortable!

Today I was working and went out for lunch so I wore a knitted roll neck jumper dress, suede heeled ankle boots and a belted wrap coat.

Yesterday I was home with my toddler so I wore mom jeans, plain shirt, thin jumper on top, embossed dr martens. + slouchy blazer and and a big scarf when we went out.

Tomorrow I think I'm going to wear a plain grey skater dress, leather jacket, opaque tights, dr martens (kendra).

Wednesday will probably be straight leg ankle grazers, ribbed grandad top, chunky cardigan and flatform trainers.

In summer I tend to live in maxi/midi dresses, maxi skirts & camis or chinos/wide leg trousers and sleeveless blouses. I don't like showing my bare legs.

This is a really long comment, sorry. I think you should try some jeans! I want to try culottes.

I'm the same size and height and sounds like similar build to you. I agree with those mentioning violetta and sainsburys. There is also a violetta outlet if you search just be aware that returns aren't free through this.

Also try ASOS, order loads of things to try you wouldn't normally choose making the most of Klarna/free returns process. I like the asos curve range, wednesdays child and junarose in particular.

Next go up to size 22, and I've had some great trousers from here. They do a range in stretchy fabric with a seam down the middle at the front that has magical effect on my thunder thighs. M & S also do similar.

Matalan, george, F&F, new look, H & M curve for cheap and cheerful

Boden, John Lewis, seasalt, whitestuff more expensive.

Defo try the midi/maxi dress with chunky books combo. Very comfortable!

I'm a similar size to you & I mainly shop in Sainsbury's, Tesco, simply be, ASOS, new look.

I wear wide leg trousers/jeans, with roll neck/batwing jumpers, loose fitted tshirts, or bootcut jeggings with longer tops, or dresses jersey shirt dresses (with pockets).

If I want to look smart, I wear a blazer jacket over what I'm wearing - I have a few in jersey or fleece material, with some stretch - really comfortable.

Invest in nice, comfy shoes & a decent bag too.

But before you buy anything make sure you know what colours suit you best and buy in 3-4 colours maximum so you can mix and match.
