Just bought some bootleg trousers for work

At work i either wear black jeggings or those capri style trousers and im sick of them. After guining a few pounds over christmas theyre also not the most comfiest.

I tried some wide leg trousers and my god they were comfy but made me look really dumpy. So ive bought some bootlegs and they make my legs looks lovely and slim, they're comfy but i also feel like ive stepped back to the year 2000 when i worked in next and wore bootlegs and t-shirts to death.

Im 40 this year so questionning my judgement sonewhat - anyone else embracing the bootlegs?

well if you bought them new they are obviously still a thing

WelshMammaofaSlovak · 03/01/2020 07:41

I'm 45 and not slim so would love some bootlegs! I am all over embracing 90s fashion and now I'm just hoping that trousers and skirts come back in because I loved that look.

Loveislandaddict · 03/01/2020 07:43

Are you pear shaped? If so, bootlegs work well for us.

everycowandagain · 03/01/2020 08:32

I am pear shaped and am desperate to get back into bootleg jeans! Might check out the shops, after all as already said it must be OK if they are available new!!!

ExpletiveDelighted · 03/01/2020 08:35

If they suit you, wear them. They don't suit me at all (despite being pear-shaped) but choosing what works for you is the main thing.

GrannyBags · 03/01/2020 08:36

I’m 47 and I’ve worn bootleg jeans since the 90’s! I’m short and fat so they are the only style that suit me.

OvalCanvas · 03/01/2020 08:38

I like them a lot , the only reason i avoid them is because finding the correct length can be tricky , and a length that works with trainers won't work with heels. They look good though.

Sharkyfan · 03/01/2020 08:39

I love the next ponte bootleg black trousers! If I try to wear skinny trousers my legs look like chicken drumsticks.
I can just about get away with straight leg ones I think but the bootleg just evens them up better. I don’t think the bootlegs are as flared as they were in the nineties...

Sharkyfan · 03/01/2020 08:39

(Hoping that makes it stylistically ok...)

Floisme · 03/01/2020 09:04

I saw loads in the shops before Christmas and our local high street is very risk averse.
It'll be my third time around so I'm not in a tearing hurry. But I still have some Gap Long n Leans (ok pendants, not quite the same as bootleg) stashed away in readiness.
I think getting the shoes right is the trickiest thing but I imagine they would work with trainers.

Floisme · 03/01/2020 10:05

Whoops - Ok pedants, not pendants Grin

chilimartini · 03/01/2020 10:07

I think they are back again! I like bootlegs but I know what you mean about stepping back in the 90's. It just doesn't feel right!!!

ZaraW · 03/01/2020 10:15

I did them back in the 90's I won't be revisiting.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 03/01/2020 10:20

I was watching Living With Yourself on the Netflix last night and both Aisling Bea's character and her partner architect were wearing a very slight bootleg, but short - shorter than ankle grazer, it seemed to stop just above their ankle boots. I thought it looked really fresh - and I do remember them first time around!

ironicname · 03/01/2020 10:37

I've read that they are going to be big this year. They have to be high waisted though, not hipster bum cracks this time round.

Doobigetta · 03/01/2020 10:41

They still look dated to me, and I’m not prepared to wear the heels they need to work. But I think we need to move on from “what’s in” and “what’s out” and be comfortable wearing what feels good and not replacing everything every couple of years. If you like them, that’s what matters.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 03/01/2020 13:29

I'll be wearing them when I next get new trousers, and although I wouldn't call myself a fashion maven, I'm a great believer in picking and choosing from trends and avoiding anything that's actively unflattering. I don't care what people say, there is no single style of trousers that suits everyone! As a pear-shape, bootcuts are good on me, skinnies much less so, so I've been compromising with straight legs while the skinny trend has been around.

I don't like the weird ankle-flapper flares that I've seen around, though. They just make the wearer look like a child from the 70s who's outgrown their trousers but can't persuade their mum to buy them any new ones. I like the bottom of the trousers to sit on the top of my shoes, which might mean having to get a longer length depending on the style - and I never wear heels.
