School run style

What do you wear or see others wearing that makes you look good on the school run?
And What's best avoided?

I fear I miss the mark on the school run. I aim for smart and tidy but functional and seem to wear jeans, brenton or shirt, knitwear, boots or trainers, wool coat or waterproof.
I always wear minimal makeup and try to have hair done.

Starlight456 · 02/01/2020 22:33

I didn’t realise till Mn it was even a thing.

I go in my clothes add coat, gloves and hat if it’s cold.

I have never gone in pj’s

Ginfordinner · 02/01/2020 22:36

Clothes for the school run is only an MN thing. When DD was at primary school I was generally in jeans most of the time. On work days I was in smart office wear. I never gave a thought to what kind of image I projected.

Miseryisabutterfly · 03/01/2020 00:58

I don’t dress for the school run. I just wear what I’d be happy in any day of the week. I don’t really notice what others are wearing unless it’s something that I would like to wear myself!

I’ve just realised the start of my post makes it sound as though I take my children to school naked 😅

HarrietSchulenberg · 03/01/2020 01:14

I've never understood why people reckon there is actually a school run dress code. There certainly isn't where I live. There's a mix of the PJs/loungewear parents, those in workclothes that vary from suits to builder gear, and everyone else in jeans and trainers. Couple of stylish-looking mums but I know them fairly well and that's just what they wear, it's not an attempt to be cool.

I never saw anyone in pjs though. People don't do that where I live.

minesagin37 · 03/01/2020 07:57

Good grief! Haven't women got enough of a challenge without creating new obstacles to trip them up? Just concentrate on dressing your child and pull on something functional and warm!

Pinknbluene · 03/01/2020 09:40

And what’s best avoided
IMO giving a shit, I have enough to deal with getting them all out of the door.

I turn up in whatever works for the day. I’ve turned up in anything from clothes covered in paint to heels and smart workwear.

ZaraW · 03/01/2020 09:50

I had too much going on to even think about what I was going to wear.

Ginfordinner · 03/01/2020 10:43

I bet the OP wishes she hadn't asked Grin

Seriously, you are overthinking this. DD's primary school was a village school, so many of the mothers turned up in jodhpurs and boots, some in gym gear, most in jeans/leggings and some in work clothes.

MerryDeath · 04/01/2020 09:47

🤨 i refuse to accept that this is a thing. when I'm doing a school run i'll just be wearing clothes, any old clothes, whatever i want to wear that day.

JMAngel1 · 04/01/2020 11:22

God this is Style section, not AIBU!
Give OP a break!

The mums I think look good on SR tend to wear midi skirts with trainers and leather jackets with big scarves. Also pleather leggings and long wool or teddy bear coats. Bodycon jersey midi dresses with slouchy jumper over top and aviator leather jacket - maybe with hiking style boots.
Wavy/curly hair, fresh face with statement lip. Cross body leather bags.

I live in the northwest UK in a place where 3 days without rain equals a drought. The school run consisted of a 15 minute walk, uphill, usually with the wind blowing a gale in your face and the rain lashing down. No matter what I looked like on leaving the house I looked like Worzel Gummidge by the time I got there. Thank heavens for High School!

JMAngel1 · 04/01/2020 11:36

NW here too - it's grim isn't it some mornings - hiking boots are my friend!

astralweaks · 04/01/2020 11:53

I never saw anyone in pjs though. People don't do that where I live.

I imagine it’s not exactly common anywhere. Confused

I wear whatever I’m wearing to work that day. Just my regular clothes. Where I live most people just wear their regular clothes so it’s a mixed bag of people in full make up with hair done and nice outfits, people in jeans and trainers or boots. Some people with no make up, some people with a bit of make up. Warm coats as it’s winter but some come in cars so have no coat on. Etc. Pretty much a mix what you would see in a regular day in a shopping centre or supermarket.
You do get the odd pj wearer but they tend to drop off and not get out the car. It doesn’t bother me but not something I would do. Others you can tell they have just threw on leggings and stuck hair up out face to make it to school on time and are most likely heading home afterwards and usually have a small baby or toddler in tow.
I wouldn’t over think the whole school gate style thing. Just dress as you normally would for the day you have planned. If you are short of time and heading home afterwards then pull on something quick and easy and sort out hair and/or makeup as normal when you get back home. So long as the child is dressed, tidy and has all the stuff needed for school then that’s all that really matters. Sometimes I will do my makeup in my car once I’ve parked up outside work as I’ve run out of time to do it before leaving for school. I only wear minimal makeup though so it’s easy for me and takes 5/10 minutes.

Wallabyone · 04/01/2020 13:15

Don't most people just get dressed for the day? Confused

cakeandchampagne · 04/01/2020 13:20

@yougotanuglyboatrace What have you been wearing until now?
