Flight outfit... comfy yet stylish-ish?

Dd and I are flying for around 8 hours in a couple of weeks. I hate flying or any kind of travelling and worry about every small detail.

What do you recommend for comfortable clothes that aren't scruffy or completely unflattering for the flight? I live in skinny jeans and jumpers but would like something more comfortable to hopefully help me relax and snooze! I'd rather not change before landing if possible.

It's likely to be really cold when we get there so I'll have packed plenty of thermals, snow boots etc for when we're there.

Any fashion tips (or any others to make this flight bearable) would be much appreciated!

Well, my tip is go for comfy, and not give a hoot about 'stylish'
Uness you are Grace Kelly, no-one gives a monkey about looking 'stylish' when traveling long haul or short haul for that matter.

hairycabbage · 02/01/2020 17:37

I don't really care much tbh but dd will and it's a really special treat for her so I want to make an effort. I don't want to rock up in joggers but there must be a happy medium!

H&M have cashmere joggers and hoodies which might suit

Roussette · 02/01/2020 17:52

Ditch your skinny jeans for longhaul.... uncomfortable!

I go for cotton fibres, something loose, the top has to be warm and snuggly as I get cold on flights. And I always have a scarf/pashmina with me, sometimes the blankets they provide aren't soft. Also a silk eye mask and noise cancelling headphones!

hairycabbage · 02/01/2020 19:03

I like the idea of cashmere, thanks. I'm definitely not wearing my skinnies, I hate uncomfortable waistbands and want to be as relaxed as possible. Big scarf I can do as I'll definitely need it on arrival!
Thanks

I fly a lot and love wearing a long t-shirt, leggings and then a big cosy soft jumper on top.

Beketaten · 03/01/2020 15:58

I'd recommend whatever else you wear a non-wired bra, crop top, sports bra or similar for the flight.

SexIsAProtectedCharacteristic · 03/01/2020 16:03

Leggings, a t shirt and a jumper. Avoid waistbands that don't stretch. Flights are either freezing or boiling hot ime. A blanket scarf or similar is useful.

You'll look like a bag of shit after 8 hours on a plane regardless so you may as well be comfy. An extra t shirt and deodorant for when you land. I'd take a few face products with you, so you can wash your face and put a bit of make up on for when you get off the plane.

Roussette · 03/01/2020 16:05

Totally agree with the non wired bra or a sports top instead. A wired bra is sooooo uncomfortable hours on a plane

hairycabbage · 03/01/2020 17:36

Thanks all- genius recommendation about underwired bra! I have a bag of wipes, moisturiser, toothpaste etc and think I'll go for fleece leggings, long t shirt and baggy sweatshirt with boots but will also bring some fleece socks for during the flight. Dd bought me a big baggy cashmere scarf for Christmas so I will also bring that.

I always wear a loose fitting maxi dress so I can breathe out comfortably, and I feel relatively tidy and very relaxed. (It also means no clothes dangling on the floor when I go to the teeny tiny loo). I lalso wear a soft jacket and take a pashmina/big soft scarf too.

Does anyone rate the pillows that stop your head lolling to one side if you sleep?Any recomeendations? I see lots of people carrying them but not so many actually using them!

OneDayAtATimex · 03/01/2020 19:38

ASOS have some nice loungewear jumpsuits. I'm flying 13 hours next week and ordered an oatmeal coloured jumpsuit with an oversized chunky cardigan.

No make up. No jewellery (can't be arsed with the faff of taking watches/bracelets off through security)

I'll wear some white Air Force ones and take a pair of those big soft socks in my rucksack for the flight.

villamariavintrapp · 03/01/2020 21:02

OneDayAtATimex you'll regret that jumpsuit/cardy combo when you need to pee!

StarlightLady · 03/01/2020 23:01

I rrgularly travel to/from the UK to Singapore, around 13 hours. I go for T shirt and leggings and a cardigan with a long T shirt dress in my flight bag as a change, you can opt to change and wear it with nothing underneath and nobody will be any of the wiser.

Jump suits are a nuisance when you go for a wee.

The neck pillow things aren’t comfy for me but it would be wrong to assume we are all the same shape.

helpneedshoes · 04/01/2020 08:55

I love (smartish) joggers as I prefer the more relaxed fit & pockets. Always have a big scarf, lightweight roomy bag, comfy jumper, thick socks. Spare outfit/swimwear in hand luggage in case of luggage delay.

I always travel in that Smile

It's not that difficult to pull the straps down? -

crustycrab · 04/01/2020 12:52

No but there's much more chance of sudden turbulence and it ending up in a pile of other peoples piss. Grim

I'm coming in with the only important clothing choice on a long haul flight....compression socks.

PhoneLock · 04/01/2020 13:06

On my way back from Australia now. Wearing my usual mid/long haul outfit. No makeup. Cargo pants, tee shirt, zipped hoodie and socks. No bra. Flat pumps for the plane, heels for the airports.

I'm not sure if it fits the stylish requirement, but it is comfortable.

hairycabbage · 04/01/2020 21:38

I like the joggers above, look really comfy! Dd is only 16 but likes to be immaculate at all times so I would like to not be completely scruffy 🤔
I've ordered this baggy jumper and have some fleece leggings that I can also wear when I'm there as it's going to be cold. I'll either wear some chunky Timberland boots or trainers, depending on the weather.
Thanks for all the tips- next step is a non underworld bra...

Molke bra.
I really recommend wool t-shirts (super.natural, Icebreaker for example). Prevents odours. I have this in several colours: www.amazon.co.uk/super-natural-Oversize-T-Shirt-SNW010920/dp/B07CRKNNKV/ref=sr_1_20?dchild=1&keywords=merino+supernatural+t-shirt&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1578176308&sr=8-20

Rachelfromfriends1 · 04/01/2020 23:11

You can get nice coordinate jogger sets, think nude bottoms with a matching top but more fitted. or leggings and a matching crop top etc.

White joggers in particular are very trendy and versatile

Other examples

violetbunny · 05/01/2020 03:51

I always dress in layers, you never know if a flight will be hot or freezing. I recently discovered that Lululemon do a great range of trousers designed for travel, they come in a variety of neutral colours. I have a charcoal pair, the waist is elastic so they're super comfy but actually look quite nice (I could easily wear them to the office). I flew long haul last week and wore them with a tank top and thin loose cardigan plus leather slip on sandals.

sheikhandbake · 05/01/2020 05:06

If you have any make up on take it off for the flight as it is terrible for your skin, crew that I see travelling off duty will take off their make up on the flight and reapply for landing Confused.

I would wear a pair of yoga type leggings, trainers and long line t shirt with a long line cardigan. Extra socks and big scarf if you are near an emergency exit as it can get freezing.

DH works for an airline so every time I fly I have to get "dressed up" to travel (part of his T&Cs). I long to schlep onto a plane wearing comfy trainers and yoga pants instead of proper shoes and trousers / a dress. Smile

Enjoy your trip!

sheikhandbake · 05/01/2020 05:06

Oh and wear a sports bra / crop top instead of an underwired one!
