Help for 10year old

Hey, my daughter is 10 and is currently going through puberty. Her skin has gone from normal to very spotty and greasey, her hair is very greasey also. She is very self conscious, I'm trying to instill in her that it's all normal and she's growing into a wonderful young woman but she hates it. I want to encourage her to make sure she's clean and looking after herself (she has suffered from depression and can go through phases of having to be made and encourage to eat and be clean) does anyone have any ideas on good and natural (I say natural but what I mean is I don't want anything harsh that could hurt her young skin) products she can use, does anyone have a routine that you think would be good for her? Should she be washing her hair daily or less often as the grease is so bad. I've had people recommend both. Any tips to help me help her, would be great. Thanks.

There’s not much she can do but cleanse twice a day and wash that hair as often as she needs to.

No matter what she does those hormones are going to keep on going.

I asked the hair washing question of a very high end hair person Smile they said was every three days but do two shampoos. They’re also absolutely adamant on the quality of the shampoo and that it shouldn’t contain silicons-among other things. They like the Windle products and said this one

They also like shampoos from Phyto.

It’s good if your DD can keep her hair away from her face.

I think children should start with something mild. I like Sam Farmer products and also Dermalogica. I also like using a clean face flannel for every wash, so that’s two a day. I find it’s a mild enough exfoliant for a child.

Both Sam Farmer and Dermalogica do small bottles so you can test for reactions without splashing out. I took DD to a Dermalogica counter and they were happy to look at her skin and give her samples. The teen range is called Clear Start but they also do a nice Ultracalming range.

I think cleansing the face twice daily followed by a moisturizer is the optimum. I’ve managed to get DD to wear an SPF in the summer but she won’t in winter. La Roche Posay or Dermalogica from the ranges mentioned above.

I’m aware some of these are a bit pricey and I’m sure there are other cheaper ranges available. It’s just I’ve had recommendations and samples from beauty insiders and I suppose they don’t get targeted by Superdrug?

Use mild products on the face morning and evening and use a tissue to blot away any excess oils in between.

Mild shampoo every 2/3 days and dry shampoo if necessary in between.

It's too easy to get in a vicious circle of stripping the natural oils off the skin and hair too frequently, or using too harsh a product, leading to the body going into overdrive to replace the oils, which in turn leads to blocked sebum ducts/spots and hair that is washed every morning and oily again by the evening.

Please don't use clearasil or oxy - they are terrible, cheap and won't improve her skin.
Check out body shop tea tree range, it's affordable and kind to skin.
Use those little flat disc shaped sponges for washing the face ( you get them in the make up section I think I got a pack of 3 for 1-2£ in Superdrug- much better than using fingertips or a flannel.
Re the greasy hair- the hair moving is also making it greasy, pin it with Kirby grips or the small bull dog clips from H&M or Claire's- keeps the hair still and your DD is less likely to touch/flick/rub hands through her hair. Can of the dry shampoo is a life saver too again Superdrug do their own version if batiste is a bit pricey.
Good luck OP x

I also like CeraVe cleansers and moisturizer. I do tend to prefer the creamy cleansers to foaming ones so I have tried the hydrating cleanser on my DD and I use it myself. However I’ve heard good things about the salicylic cleanser. You can but it in Boots and Suoerdrug.
CeraVe isn’t the same as Cetaphil even though the bottles are similar.
Flannels can be boiled to get rid of bacteria. If you’re worried they’re too harsh then a normal cotton handkerchief makes a good substitute, again it can be boiled.

DD has used the Johnsons clean and clear range since year 6, and I use it too, not too harsh and touch wood for us has been a good easy skincare tool

gracielooloo · 02/01/2020 17:17

I bought DD(11) some cleanser from a company called Spots and Stripes.
They’re apparently made especially for pre teen skin, who knows if they’re any better than any other brand but she likes it and is happy to use it.

Dry shampoo is her friend. I have blonde straight hair that looks greasy very quickly but I wash every 2-3 days and use dry in between.
