Is there anything in the world that can stop my short, wiry, grey hairs on top of my head sticking up?!!

I’ve tried various smoothing creams, oils and hairsprays but still they won’t lie flat! The wispy short grey hairs around my hairline and parting look awful. Made worse I’m sure with t-section of bleach highlights which are also looking frizzy.

Before I waste any more money can anyone please tell me if they have found anything that works to tame these buggers?!!

Also any recommendations for shampoo for dry, frizzy highlighted hair.

I can't help but am watching with interest.

BoneAppleTeaa · 30/12/2019 20:37

I’ve not found a solution yet, but watching!

NeurotrashWarrior · 30/12/2019 20:42

I'm not sure I'm afraid but my life long poker straight hair is going curly with age!

damnthatanxiety · 30/12/2019 20:46

Perhaps rethink the bleaching. That won't be helping. Why are the hairs short? Are they breaking off? Are we talking just normal numbers of new hairs or a lot of small hairs due to increased breakage?

Blossom4538 · 30/12/2019 20:52

I have the same! No bleach, but short crazy greys!

Winterdaysarehere · 30/12/2019 20:54

A hat!!. Xmas Grin

Littlemiss74 · 30/12/2019 20:54

I think they are new hairs but are grey and wiry. My natural hair colour is dark mousey brown. I started having highlights as the hairdresser it wold disguise the greys which it kind of does but now my hair is so dry and clearly not in good condition. I don’t know what to do next. I don’t want to see the greys but these bleach highlights are not doing it for me. The underneath of my hair is still really brown and in much better condition.
Would it be possible to ask for an all over tint next time to lighten it but without using bleach? Would that be possible? I wish I could just start again using a box dye at home so I could do the roots myself but because there is so much colour in it I am too nervous to do this.

Watching. Sometimes I use lip balm in desperation.

damnthatanxiety · 30/12/2019 21:07

Tint won't lighten hair. Tint colours hair. If your natural hair is dark mouse, is your hairdresser bleaching it too much perhaps? I would only have highlights put in. Maybe 2 shades lighter. To break up the dark and reduce contrast with the grey. That shouldn't damage your hair so much. Greys do have a tendency to ping straight up until they are longer. Not much can be done other than colouring them. Perhaps an all over mid brown with highlights?

Littlemiss74 · 30/12/2019 23:35

Thank you damnthatanxiety that is helpful, you sound knowledgeable on the subject which I am not which I think is why I’m struggling to get my hair right. I I definitely think it’s been bleached too much. Is it possible to ask for highlights without bleach? I thought bleach had to be used to get it light enough on darker hair?
Do you think I’d be able to do something myself so that I could then touch the roots up myself? My roots show by 4 weeks and the hairdresser charges £40 a time just to do the roots!

You could try a light smooth over of the grey hairs with a moisturised hand to weigh down the wayward ones as moisturiser is heavy.

However you should only coat those wayward hairs as it will make your hair look greasy if you get it everywhere else.

Powerplant · 30/12/2019 23:56

Try a silk pillowcase - done wonders for my brittle hair

astridstar · 31/12/2019 00:02

Try Olaplex No 3, not cheap but it really worked for me.

peoplepleaser1 · 31/12/2019 07:47

OP have you possibly plucked out some of those pesky greys? They do then seem to grow back in a sticking up way until they get longer and fall in line with the rest.....

Egghead68 · 31/12/2019 08:54

I pluck but it is the worst thing to do. It is best to let them grow long.

Ginkypig · 04/01/2020 11:27

I am shamelessly bringing this thread to the new year because I want more people to see it and help meeeee Sad

My long very dark life long poker straight not coloured hair is becoming hostage to pokey up curly! Wiry greys. I am happy to go grey but can't they just grow down the way like the rest of my hair?

Wauden · 04/01/2020 11:50

Someone pointed my little buggers to me. I put a little water on them.

BrandoraPaithwaite · 04/01/2020 12:03

I have long straight mid brown hair, with thick wiry coarse greys sprouting!

Plucking is a terrible idea (but sooo tempting) because they just come back and are always short and sticking up!

I have managed to grow the greys to a few inches long and now I run over the greys with my ghds and it makes them straight, smooth and shiny silvery. They even catch the light and glint. So my advice is grow and straighten the greys.

Littlemiss74 · 04/01/2020 12:03

My dd 7 pointed mine out to me, so politely but hence the need for me starting this thread😩.
Hairdresser has since suggested Olaplex bond smoother so I’m going to give that a go. It had better work as it’s not cheap!!

OP posts:
Littlemiss74 · 04/01/2020 12:05

Brandora good idea but mine seem to be sprouting by the day particularly around my hairline at the front (like bloody baby hair!) so surely there are always going to be some that are short and sprouty even if some have grown longer?

My hair began to do this so I use;

Superdrug argan oil pre shampoo elasticiser
Waitrose normal shampoo & conditioner
Superdrug castoil oil leave in conditioner
One pump Tesco hair serum, red bottle.

Lee Stafford hot iron protection spray, run the straighteners over it at 215c.

Highlights will involve some degree of bleaching but the less lifting of colour, the less harsh the bleaching. You want to focus on the condition of your hair as it ages and also on breaking up the solid block of dark colour so the increasing grey is less obvious. I have very dark hair. It is a bit tricky as dying it back to it's natural colour creates too harsh a regrowth and also, looks crazy as I age. The skin tine changes and the original dark looks too dark now.

So my current regime is to have the roots touched up regularly with a colour that is lighter than my natural colour. The greys therefore end up mid brown whilst the not-yet-gray hairs look uncoloured. As I get more grey, I end up with more of the coloured mid brown and less of the natural dark brown. This way it ends up gradually getting lighter and more suitable for my ageing skin tone. I also have a scattering of loe level highlights put through to even things out as the greys are not evenly distributed. So eventually, I will end up being lighter and lighter brown.....or that's the plan. I guess at some point when I am VERY grey, I will look at growing it out. That is a whole different matter and I will only do this when I have mostly grey/white hair.

MurielTheCamel · 04/01/2020 19:07

I had my hair cut the other day and the hairdresser gave me a tip for exactly this problem - she said spray a bit of hairspray on your hand, rub hands together and and use that like you would a wax or whatever to smooth them down.

Nancelot · 04/07/2024 17:24

NEVER use Olaplex. NEVER recommend it. Did you not know there's a class-action lawsuit against this company because their product makes hair fall out? I can't recall exactly which of their products, but I wouldn't ever patronize them again. I know first hand, because my hair is a victim of Olaplex. It made my hair fall out severely. Now I have all these short and broken hairs, gray primarily, sticking straight up. It looks like someone rubbed sandpaper across my hair. That's how I came to this site, looking for a solution for the horrifying sight of my hair. All I can do is to wear it up, put it up with a soft scrunchie type of thing. It will take 10 years for this hair to grow to my normal length.
