high spf & looking unhealthy

mid forties and generally good skin though have slight melasma since having dc.
want to do more to age gracefully.

usually I have a moisturiser with spf 15 + suncream (spf30) on the beach/on days out, but prefer to keep out the sun and never sunbathe.

would I not look unhealthy if I went with high spf all year? is it really worth it?

Well, IMO, the paleness is not what ages one - pale skin, if glowy and hydrated, can look gorgeous! Perhaps the evening skincare is where the main work gets done - I usually double-cleanse (Simple Oil first, then a Cerave or Cetaphil cream cleanser last) followed by a hyaluronic acid serum (enjoying Indeed Labs at the moment!) and I mix in a drop of The Ordinary Niacinamide for brightening. Then a Toleriane Night Fluid moisturiser. I'll then use a tretinoin 0,025% cream. The tretinoin has been amazing for exfoliating away the brown sun spots on my face. Made a huge difference, as well as for overall skin clarity and smoothness.

Also, I find that acids are amazing for making one's skin look younger! For me, Glycolic is the best and I love The Ordinary lotion, or Drunk Elephants Framboos. Sometimes, if my skin is feeling sensitive I'll use a gentler acid, like The Ordinary Lactic or Azelaic. But I alternate the acids nightly with my tretinoin and am seeing very good results.

SPF every day is essential, and in the UK winter I'm fine with spf30 from Ultrasun. They also have a tinted version, because I'm so pale I can only mix one drop of this into my regular SPF. But it does have a very pleasing effect and acts as tinted moisturizer without compromising the SPF protection.

I also use Colorscience Mineral Powder SPF throughout the day if I'm out and about and can't reapply the cream SPF. That also comes in a tinted version. It's really handy.

I have pale skin and use a spf everyday. The best two I have found for me are

Boots no7 all in one foundation factor 50 as someone else mentioned above

Arbonne RE9 prepwork daily veil with factor 30. This one is less of a foundation and more of a tinted cream but it blends to your skin

Neither of the above sit heavy on my skin or irritate it and neither have any scent which I don’t get on with

Shhh sorry but makeup products don't count as spf

  • you don't apply the required 1.25ml which is a lot more than you think
  • they have poor quality filters
  • no / low PPD rating which is UV protection
