Is a Vivienne Westwood watch a nice 18th present?

I have zero style or idea about brands so bear with me please

Goddaughter will be 18 soon. I have a budget of £150 and want to get something that's a bit classy. Obviously the sales are on at the moment which brings some things into my budget but am trying to avoid the crap!

If my watch idea is way off then I'd be truly grateful of any suggestions.

Why don’t you just sat ‘gd, id love to get you a watch or a nice piece of jewellery for your birthday, budget is this, what would you like?’

Then you will get her something she will love, use and treasure.

My jewellery box is full of slightly pointless bits of jewellery that I don’t really like that were gifts.

I’m not sure a fashion watch will still be working in 40 years OP. I would get some simple earrings in gold/silver that won’t date.

JoJoSM2 · 27/12/2019 14:43

You could get a Tissot watch. It’s a proper Swiss brand with excellent mechanisms but without the daft prices of some other brands. A classic style she’ll be able to keep for a very long time.

Anything Vivienne Westwood, Michael Kors, Pandora etc i
Is just temporary fashion stuff.

jinglebellz · 27/12/2019 14:49

Does she like stationary? Lots of my friends did at that age. I got a fancy fountain pen off my dad for my 16th and a propelling pencil and pen for my 18th from a family friend. Love them dearly and still use them now (am 27). You could always offer that to her as an idea. It's a nice thing you can have forever but can quite happily live in a drawer for three years too.

JoJoSM2 · 27/12/2019 14:49

Or looking at Silver bracelets, Tiffany’s seem to have a could of styles for around £150. It’d probably feel a little more special than Pandora.

Newnamewhodis1 · 27/12/2019 14:52

I like Westwood - have some dresses. But would hate a watch. Unless you know she loves a brand, avoid. I would take her out for lunch and shipping.

Ninkanink · 27/12/2019 14:54

If she’s pretty cool and trendy then I think she’d probably like it, it’s popular with a few young brand-conscious women I know. It’s definitely much cooler than pandora, unless her specific circle is into that.

I like the suggestion of taking her out for dinner and then offering to get her a watch or piece of jewellery. She can either pick it in person or go online and find something within the budget. Then, once she knows what she wants, make sure you buy or order it, wrap it as usual and give or send it to her. That way it’ll feel more special.

She’ll probably really like being able to choose something, and you’ll know for sure that she loves it.

DD 17 saved for months to buy a nice watch, and waited for the sales.

They are very popular.

baubled · 27/12/2019 15:07

Don't buy make up brushes, they might be appreciated but not special at all!

If she's a quirky dresser than VW might be right up her street, can you send a picture to her mum?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/12/2019 16:14

I disagree re makeup brushes - some really good ones would last her for years and years.

I don't think it's possible to buy something guaranteed to still be used in 40 years. Tastes change so much.

peachypetite · 27/12/2019 16:18

What about a Vivienne Westwood clutch?

mysteryfairy · 27/12/2019 16:54

My DD and a lot of her friends are suddenly into Vivienne Westwood accessories. DD would not wear a watch as uses her phone to tell the time but has a Westwood Orb pendant and earrings. DD is 18 in January... Westwood jewellery has already featured in 18th gifts for those older in year. However I don’t think it’s classic or keepable...I bought the orb earrings for Xmas on the basis that they were relatively cheap (£60 ish) and not the end of the world when dd outgrows the fad.

Satc71 · 27/12/2019 16:55

Vivienne Westwood watches are really in with younger girls at the moment. Second the idea of a clutch bag too; either way a thoughtful idea!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/12/2019 16:57

The other thing about Westwood (and I say this as a big fan) is that the quality is pretty poor. DD had an orb necklace which broke within days, and ended up returning it for a refund. I've got a scarf which is worse quality than scarves from M&S, but cost three times as much.

Newnamewhodis1 · 27/12/2019 17:07

There's some cute VW bags in the sale on her website

Ginfordinner · 27/12/2019 17:26

I have a Tissot watch JoJoSM2. It is excellent.

I think this would be a nicer gift than a VW watch.

Trewser · 27/12/2019 17:50

I've given a few Paloma picasso heart necklaces from tiffany and they are always well recieved

Pixiedust74 · 27/12/2019 17:59

I got my niece some Doc Martins for her 18th as that's what she asked for and she loves them. The previous year I got her a Radley watch that she's never worn. Always best to ask them what they want rather than guess it.

Ginfordinner · 27/12/2019 18:17

I think if you are getting anything at all where a personal preference is important then you really do have to take her shopping with you. Watches and bracelets need to be the right size (as do Doc Martens).

In my case I had to have loads of links taken out when I chose my Tissot watch.

Mooey89 · 27/12/2019 18:23

I got this for my 30th recently and it’s lovely and exciting and Tiffany!

Can see an alternative 18 year old wanting a bead bracelet!
