They didn't like me wearing make up at any time.

OP posts:
BigWholeBean · 22/12/2019 21:00

Knee high boots. For prostitutes only apparently

formerbabe · 22/12/2019 21:02

@EstebanTheMagnificent

I was also not allowed that t shirt on the grounds that it was common...apparently. I'm still bitter.

BeBesideTheSea · 22/12/2019 21:04

Jeans (“common”). And high heels - bad for growing feet

bananahood · 22/12/2019 21:12

No black, no crop tops, no bare shoulders/strappy tops, no logos, no skulls. DDs have things which flout all those rules.

Babybel90 · 22/12/2019 21:24

Anything my mother considered to be ‘common’ ie anything that was cool or my peers were wearing.

Mominatrix · 22/12/2019 21:28

Make up, miniskirts, multiple bangles a la Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan, cheap jewellery (sensible pearls in ears and neck or small diamond studs were OK).

NamechangeProtectIdentity · 22/12/2019 21:29

YY to knee high boots, patent leather shoes.

Basically, if M&S didn't sell it, I couldn't have it.

MoreHairyThanScary · 22/12/2019 21:31

Slip on shoes ( had ones with straps that could be pushed back... but had to wear the straps)

isabellerossignol · 22/12/2019 21:31

I wasn't allowed to wear anything black.

namechangetheworld · 22/12/2019 21:34

Jeans here too. Too common, apparently.

SomethingSpecialzz · 22/12/2019 21:36

RaRa skirt - I was absolutely desperate for one. I’d moved to a new school which I hated and was trying desperately to fit in, felt the skirt would have fixed everything. Dm just thought they looked really cheap...

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 22/12/2019 21:37

Not allowed to wear pretty or girly things

Or to grow my hair longer than chin length

Not allowed earrings, nail varnish, make up

At 18 (!!!!) I finally rebelled and got my ears pierced, bought make up and really short dresses and red lipstick GrinGrinGrin

They meant well and wanted me to be a lefty intellectual who was not into her looks Wink but that never happened

SarahTancredi · 22/12/2019 21:38

Earrings and nose ring.

Took til i was 14/15 before I was allowed and even then it was only one in each ear. Think it was a "common " thing too. Course they Kinda freaked when I pierced my own ears and nose Grin

MissClementine · 22/12/2019 21:41

Slip on shoes - very common!

ClaireDendie · 22/12/2019 21:42

I assume those talking common would mean their mums wouldn't exit them to look like me in my teens, skin tight joggers that had my arse curves on show and a crop top!

AlexaAmbidextra · 22/12/2019 21:58

I grew up in the 60s so miniskirts. I had a black mini that was so tiny it would fold up into my handbag so I just used to take it with me and change at my destination. I finally confessed to my father when he was 94. 😂

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 22/12/2019 22:00

Mum had a very strict Methodist upbringing and I think she sort of went the other way with me. I was quite anxious and conservative and she was forever trying to get me into "trendy" or "pretty" clothes. I just wanted to wear jeans and jumpers and she would bemoan the fact that I wasn't "showing off my figure". I absolutely hated it!

sawyersfishbiscuits · 22/12/2019 22:03

@SomethingSpecialzz

I wasn't allowed a RaRa skirt either! No idea what that was about.

I now have 'discussions' with DD mini-me aged 10 about black/leopard print and dreadful cheap tacky shoes... pretty sure I'm turning into my DM 🙄

CrazylazyJane · 22/12/2019 22:35

Shell suits - my mother was terrified that my sister and I would turn in to human fireballs if we even looked at my Nan's fireplace, with one on.

Slip on shoes as well. And my grandad had a thing about me "running around the street with no socks on with my shoes, looking like 'a gypsie". Sorry if that offends anyone. He was old and highly offensive on many levels Angry

CatyaPurella · 22/12/2019 23:53

Jelly shoes. My DM thought they were bad for my growing feet. To be fair they were fucking hideous!

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 22/12/2019 23:55

Slip on shoes again! I'd break my neck.

FloraGreysteel · 23/12/2019 00:01

My hot pink catsuit with a green and yellow floral blouse underneath and red wellingtons. Apparently it was too much. I was about 9.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 23/12/2019 00:01

Trousers. Earrings, wasn't allowed my ears pierced until I was 16 and then I went out and got 3 piercings in one ear. Short skirts but I was allowed figure hugging ankle length ones. Found a great shop which sold ones which clung to your legs until mid calf and then flared out.

BodenGate · 23/12/2019 00:08

Shell suits here too. Otherwise pretty relaxed with heels and makeup

Icanflyhigh · 23/12/2019 00:24

Dr martens boots!

They hated them with a passion!
I have 5 pairs now and wear them daily!
