Jeans that won't go out of fashion

Hello! I'm not a person who is into fast-fashion or who likes to wear stuff that's "in". I just want to look good and have a simple wardrobe with quality pieces that won't go out of style. I've lost 105 pounds since march after having weight loss surgery and am now reassembling my wardrobe. What i've come to realize is that the jeans scenario has shifted a lot and it seems like cuts are completely diferent from the last time i was able to shop on regular shops.

So i ask you lovely ladies who have a greater gasp on style if there is such a thing as a type of jeans that won't go out of fashion. I don't want it to be trendy, just want to look ok and like i'm from the current decade (whichever decade it might be). Ideally i'd like to be able to buy jeans and wear it untill it dies. Is there such a thing as a timeless jeans? How does it look?

I'm from Brazil so there's a very slim chance of knowing local brands from UK and several other places but i'd apreciate links/pictures so i can see what the jeans look like (if they exist!).

I'm not stylish, but with jeans you can wear whatever you like.
I have work straight jeans for years, regardless of fashion.
Gap is pretty good for these, as are brands like Levi's, 7 for all Mankind, Diesel...

I'd say a pair of dark denim skinny jeans are now a classic.

I don't think there is such a thing I'm afraid. Jeans have been at the forefront of fashion for the last few decades and the downside of that is that they're very prone to passing trends. However the basic silhouette e.g skinny/wide/flare tends to stick around for a long time. At the moment, no shape really has a grip and you can buy must about every style on the high street which is highly unusual and very enjoyable. I doubt it will last though.

Right now I would say the nearest thing to 'timeless' is a straight leg in a dark wash, waist not too high or too low and with no 'extras' like rips or faux fading. Or you could bide your time, wait until the trend settles before investing and with any luck get a decade with them looking current.

I haven't been really happy with a pair of jeans for a long time so I don't feel in a position to recommend any brands but hopefully someone else will be along soon.

Congratulations on the weight loss!

I agree with Flo.

I think dark jeans will be popular for a while as a nod to environmental concerns, the faded and ripped ones are more wasteful of water and don't last as long because they are already distressed. Not sure about fabric, cotton is very wasteful of water but mixed fibres are difficult to recycle and shed microfibres although they last longer. Depends how long the latest environmental awareness lasts. After the crash in 2007 all the home decoration magazines were full of upcycled furniture but that asthetic is no longer high fashion and it's all quite 70s and luxe these days.

One benefit of dark jeans is that you can get away with not washing them for ages. We wash clothes far too often.

What I see people wearing are skinny ankle length stonewash jeans/jeggings. Saw lots of ripped jeans at the weekend in a city in a different area.

queenofarles · 23/12/2019 12:48

the only jeans I own that still look "in" and not dated are straight ones,
I don’t mean that jeggings and skinnies look dated but they actually do look a bit wrong with my clothes and how I wear them. Very much like being stuck in a rut.

Skinnies were popular for over a decade , and now more relaxed jeans are replacing them.

I don’t think you can find a pair that would last more than a few years though The style might be popular but everything from the stitching to the wash get updated very often.

MikeUniformMike · 23/12/2019 12:55

I've got jeans that I've had over a decade. They are mid rise, straight legged, and have now faded.
They never looked trendy - they're just nice jeans.

I have an awful lot of jeans - I don't care too much about what's in, as long as I look ok in them, so have held on to the slight bootcuts and will hold on to the skinny jeans. I didn't bother with the low rise as I didn't like them.

AJTracey · 23/12/2019 13:00

Salvage straight leg

peaceanddove · 23/12/2019 13:05

Gap Best Girlfriend jeans in a dark wash are timeless IMO. They skim rather than cling to your legs and are a medium rise. Really flattering.

fedup21 · 23/12/2019 13:08

Ideally i'd like to be able to buy jeans and wear it untill it dies.

But that’s unlikely to be for 30 years, is it?! More like 2-5. 10 at most, that’s presuming you’re weight doesn’t fluctuate at all in that time and they still fit you.

Just buy what looks good to you now.

NotMeNoNo · 23/12/2019 13:46

I used to have some straight leg dark indigo Levis (Possibly 724) they fitted so well I could have had more of the same for ever. Jeans do wear out though.
The main thing is to get ones that suit your shape/colouring and then they will always look good on you.

MikeUniformMike · 23/12/2019 14:16

One of my good pairs are dark straight Levi's. When skinny was all the rage, they seemed a bit boring but they fit nicely and are great quality.
I always recommend Gap, but M&S is good for having lots of different styles too. Both tend to be generous - I no longer fit M&S sizes as the 6 is too big. Both are good for prices.

SuckingDieselFella · 23/12/2019 17:05

Gap straight leg or M&S Ivy.

Inthetropics · 27/12/2019 12:04

I'm sorry for taking so long to reply! Thank you all for the sugestions, they've helped a lot! From what i gathered, skinny jeans and straight leg jeans in a dark wash are the closest there is to timeless, so i've gone for a dark denim straight leg jeans that makes me feel great (skinny were never my thing). I don't want to look trendy, just ok, so this is perfect for me. I hope to wear this pair for many years to come!

105 pounds! Well done OP.

care to share how you did it?

Badabingbadabum · 27/12/2019 12:17

Slim, straight legged definitely. I bought a black pair last winter and am wearing them today, turned up with flats. They just look right, (and if I do say so myself) always in style, neither frumpy and dated.
