If you have the Dyson Airwrap would you recommend it?

Is it worth it? Am I right in thinking you can dry your hair with it too?

£400?
The reviews are poor.

optimisticpessimist01 · 18/12/2019 20:12

I haven't got it but I've used a friends a couple of times. Honestly its less hassle just to blow dry your hair and use curlers/straighteners to curl. You have to do it in a very precise way or your hair just goes strange and fluffy and frizzy. For the price tag I would avoid

SallieSallow · 18/12/2019 20:59

I would recommend but I seem to have the right hairtype for it as it’s thick and ‘grippy’ and holds curls well. I like the dryer and the other brushes as well as they don’t make my hair frizzy or staticky like most hairdryers/heated styling appliances do. It is a lot of money but I didn’t own any drying/styling gizmos or gadgets before I bought it so would have had to spend quite a bit anyway if I’d bought them all separately. And then they’d have probably given me frizz and ended up shoved unused in a drawer, at least I’m getting my money’s worth out of the Airwrap.

GertieGumboyle · 18/12/2019 21:05

I bought one and couldn't get the hang of it at all, so sent it back (I have dead straight, limp, fine, shoulder-length hair which won't hold a curl).

I went back to using my straighteners as curlers (I've tried heated rollers, hot brushes, rags, sleeping in sponge rollers - you name it, I've tried it). However, they were frying my hair so badly that I decided to give the Airwrap another go, and really persist with it.

I'm now pleased with it. I use it every day (wash my hair every other day). My hair is definitely less split and fried (no burning smell, either). All in all, it was a good buy. I took out an interest-free credit card so I could pay it off over several months Blush.

bingowingsmcgee · 18/12/2019 23:33

Gertie do you find that your hair holds the curl?

ChequerBoard · 18/12/2019 23:54

I love mine now that I have got the hang of using it. It's the only way I can make my hair look like it does when I've been to the salon. Curls do stay in if you have applied styling product and use it correctly.

AFemale · 19/12/2019 02:05

I have thin flyaway that has never held a curl and I love my air wrap.

I bought mine in Nov 2018 and use it every time I wash my hair. Curls hold all day for me and that's a first, I've spent a fortune on the curling wands and various rollers and Tongs and they last an hour max.

I love mine and would feel lost without it now but saying that, I've watched loads of videos and know there's a lot of people who don't like them. It's been a game changer for me and I've got a lot less hair fall out in general over the last year. I think John Lewis type places have demos which might be good if you can to one of them.

They brought some new attachments out not long ago but I'm not sure if sets come with them yet.

LordEmsworth · 19/12/2019 06:08

I bought one 6 weeks ago. I have never been able to curl my hair (fine & flyaway) but I can with this. I am not too keen on the hairdryer bit, but I use the smoothing brush a lot, it takes 5 minutes to do what used to take me 15 with a "normal" hairdryer and I have a much better success rate (you know how some days your hair just won't do what it did yesterday - that doesn't happen). And the condition of my hair improved within days, I didn't think it was in bad condition but it's like silk now.

So I would recommend. It does take a bit of getting used to, but it's very satisfying when you do...

Luckystar1 · 19/12/2019 06:25

Yes! It’s absolutely amazing. I have a longish Bob so I don’t use the curl bit often but I have very thick hair and it has significantly cut down drying time. I’m frequently complimented on my hair now.

Radardodgingninga · 19/12/2019 09:02

I have every hairdryer known to MN. The ordinary Dyson, a Parlux, a Babyliss Big Hair, the Dyson Airwrap and the Revlon Pro One step dryer and Volumiser. There are others too!

TBH I wouldn’t recommend the AirWrap. It’s not awful, it leaves the hair smooth and shiny but it’s not as quick as the ordinary Dyson and for volume and wave the Revlon is better.

The main problem with the Airwrap is that the style doesn’t hold. It’s very frustrating. I dry and curl and boost and it looks fab for an hour or two, just like it does on the adverts but the style drops very quickly and then I just have shiny flat hair. I’ve tried loads of different techniques and products and even went for a complimentary blow dry at the Oxford Street show room but the outcome is always the same. Fabulous hair for a little while and then disappointment.

missfliss · 19/12/2019 09:44

well i love mine.

i'm using it as my usual hairdryer, and the smoothing brushes are amazing.

Not only does my long and highly bleached (!) hair look like i've had a proper hairdresser blow dry, it also has improved the condition of my hair so much that my hairdresser has commented how healthy it is despite all the peroxide.

StraightenUpAndFryRight · 19/12/2019 10:47

Thanks for the reviews everyone. I might go try it out in the shop.

KatharinaRosalie · 19/12/2019 10:48

Love mine. I have thin fine hair, and most other gadgets leave it fluffy. This gives a shiny smooth finish, as it pulls hairs inwards when curling, instead of blowing them out like for example BBH. It also does not pull or snag

fiorentina · 19/12/2019 17:22

I would recommend.
Long bob quite straight hair and it holds fine. I find it quick and easy to use but do use a bit of product to hold the waves/curls.

reallychristmasaaagain · 19/12/2019 17:31

I love mine, I’ve used it every day since I bought it 10 months ago.

Writersblock2 · 19/12/2019 17:41

How is it on shorter hair? Mine is almost chin length at the front and shorter at the back.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 19/12/2019 17:42

All day long. I love mine, it is my favourite ever Christmas present. DH and DS went halves on it and I treasure it.

reallychristmasaaagain · 19/12/2019 18:15

Mine varies from quite short (and fine) to shoulder length and I find it useful on both. It’s a good set of tools for those of us who’ve got 5-10 mins at the outside for bake styli gg in the morning.

reallychristmasaaagain · 19/12/2019 18:16

hair styling not baking!

Blankiefan · 19/12/2019 19:22

I love mine. Got it for Xmas last year and I use it pretty much every day. I have very thick hair. I've never gotten on with my hair until now. Every day, I know I can have good hair. It has changed my relationship with my hair.

GertieGumboyle · 19/12/2019 21:44

@bingowingsmcgee I do spend quite a lot of time on this, so forgive me if I'm a bit long-winded (I hate my very straight hair, btw, and have spent about 35 years trying to get it to hold a wave at the very least).

I wash my hair every other day (could possibly get away with every three days, and occasionally do when BF is away).

My poor hair has had a lifetime of drying, curling, etc, etc. I started to panic when I realised that curling it with straighteners was making it frizzy and split-ended. Hence succumbing to the Airwrap.

I wash my hair then let it dry naturally for a bit. If I'm really pressed for time, I semi-dry it with the Airwrap drying attachment.

I then curl it with one of the smaller curling devices. I bought the complete set, but in practice I only use one. I know they recommend using differently arrowed ones for different sides of your head, but I don't.

I use a Boots heat treatment lotion beforehand, and Lidl hairspray afterwards.

It looks completely fabulous for about five minutes, until I go outside. However, it does at least look as if something has happened to it after that (which, for me, is a miracle).

I used it the other day, and went to my osteopath about 3 hours later (i.e. after the initial me-being-happy period). He said: "I like the glam hair". I know lots of MNers would object to this, but I was happy, and said thank you - not least as it gave me a second opinion (he is a friend, btw, not a random bloke).

I use it on the non-hair-wash days with some multipurpose spray, just to give it a bit of a wave. I have a fringe, to add insult to injury (I look even worse without one - I've tried), and it needs curling under every day. I should really never venture out without a sponge roller in my fringe. Grin

As I said, I spend far too much time thinking about my hair!!

StraightenUpAndFryRight · 19/12/2019 22:03

This is the kind of detail I’m here for Gertie! Grin Smile

I think that’s a nice compliment.

StraightenUpAndFryRight · 19/12/2019 22:03

From your osteopath I mean.

OP posts:
GertieGumboyle · 19/12/2019 22:07

Oh thank you, @StraightenUpAndFryRight I just needed to qualify it, because I know there are loads of people on here who would think it was a horribly sexist and unnecessary comment - but I was just glad that my hair looked ok!!

MissCharleyP · 19/12/2019 22:52

TBH, no I wouldn’t. Got it last Christmas and had shoulder length hair. My hair is VERY thick and takes forever to dry. As pp said the curls don’t last (and I can get three days from a Secret Curl) and I found it fiddly and time consuming as I have loads of hair, for very little reward. I mean the Curl Secret took ages but then I never had to do anything for three days.

My hair is now short with an undercut so I only use the dryer and brush attachment. I wish I’d just got the full size dryer as I love that and my hair does dry quicker.
