Weekend by Max Mara worth the money vs Max Mara?

I was wandering around my local department store yesterday (ostensibly Christmas shopping) when I happened upon this coat in the sale:

m.zalando.co.uk/weekend-maxmara-ottanta-classic-coat-blau-mw721u01p-k11.html

I’ve always wanted a classic wrap coat, to just throw on as a cover up for things like longer dresses, that I find don’t work very well with a lot of coat styles (eg my usual parka Blush). The ones I’ve seen are often camel, which I admire in theory but in reality really washes me out.

I was thrilled to find this one in navy- and the 100% wool fabric feels beautiful- but 2 things are giving me pause:

  1. Is there a risk it would look a bit like a dressing gown on a shorter person? I’m 5’4”, size 10-12, hourglass. The one in stock that I tried on was a 12 but it did look a bit oversized- they are in stock in various places online in a 10 though. The model in the link shows the fit quite well I think.

  2. Is it pointless/ not good value getting Weekend by Max Mara as opposed to Max Mara? I can’t afford the main line even in the sale, although I’ve always coveted their coats.

Any thoughts much appreciated! It’s still a lot of money for me so I don’t want to make a mistake.

@SurpriseSparDay any suggestions for more exciting places than Baukjen that sells sustainable clothing?

SurpriseSparDay · 18/12/2019 10:41

It's still a massive cost at £644

Doesn’t that rather depend on a whole heap of things?

I become very resentful when I see women being castigated (or questioned) for spending money on themselves ...

MoltoAgitato · 18/12/2019 10:47

I have nothing to add to this thread other than I love the coat and I am very envious!

CaptainWentworth · 18/12/2019 11:03

I haven’t bought it yet and I probably can’t justify it anyway - it’s reduced to £451 in the sale in a few places; I certainly wouldn’t pay full price.

Thanks for all the comments though - really interesting to get all the opinions!

@Sooverthemill I’d like to know that too!

@SurpriseSparDay I quite agree, but revitalising a wardrobe takes time and energy and I have neither just now Grin. I fell victim to the ‘capsule wardrobe of quality basics’ concept, but in my real life that reads more as basic bitch than Sofia Coppola Shock

Sooverthemill · 18/12/2019 12:05

@CaptainWentworth brand alley always has good quality coats from places like jaeger at good prices. I've had success there but their returns are a bit annoying but the savings can be huge.

CaptainWentworth · 18/12/2019 12:24

@mumdom just had a look at Massimo Dutti and this coat looks pretty similar for a lot less money - but would it be as nice?

I think what I don’t like about a lot of the wrap coats I’ve tried previously is that they are tailored on the shoulders, which makes them look less slouchy and unstructured. The Massimo Dutti one does have a similar shoulder shape to the Weekend by MM (raglan sleeve? What is it that I mean?)

The Massimo Dutti is wool 82%, polyamide 18%. Presumably the Weekend one is 100% wool?

SurpriseSparDay · 18/12/2019 12:32

(Where’s the over-invested emoji?)

CaptainWentworth · 18/12/2019 13:00

Yes it is. I’m pretty much fantasy shopping here you know, not sure I could justify purchase to DH. He does keep asking me what I want for Christmas though!

SurpriseSparDay

Not castigating or questioning the cost in any way ShockSmile I spend fortunes on clothes/jewellery etc

Just a statement - £644 is a massive cost if you don't love it

mumdom · 18/12/2019 15:23

That Massimo Dutti coat is fabulous on screen. When you try it on, consider the weight and the pile of the wool. If it feels and looks good on you, it’s a no-brainer. The small synthetic content will probably make it harder wearing.

You probably won’t have the lustre that you get with Maxmara wool but you’ll also have £300 remaining in your purse.

tigerbear · 18/12/2019 15:29

I go in Massimo Dutti a lot, and the quality is really good. Their sales are great too, and I bet there’d be a good reduction on that coat.

flipflop256 · 07/05/2024 12:45

I bought a maxmara the cube jacket recently and the lining is all unravelling. It was pretty expensive so I am very disappointed. I think the coat will be unwearable soon
