Would parabens put you off using a gorgeous lipstick?

Just that really. Dsis has given me a really lovely lipstick, but it has parabens in it. I hardly ever use any beauty products, and the ones I use tend to be naturalish. I thought parabens are being phased out, so was surprised to see it in the ingredients list.
Would it concern you, or would you wear with impunity, seeing as it is the nicest shade ever?

Well since you've been gifted it and you love the shade I would definitely use it.

If a product doesn't contain parabens, legally it has to contain other preservatives. These are necessary to stop bacteria growing to dangerous levels in a cosmetic product. Did you know that parabens are found naturally in foods such as strawberries and blueberries?! Nature's preservatives!

Id re gift it Blush

Parabens in cosmetics will not harm you. The mould and filth that would grow on it without might.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 16/12/2019 18:31

No, it wouldn’t bother me one bit. Unless you’re allergic, enjoy wearing it!

As I understand it, not all parabens are dangerous.

Some parabens were banned in the EU in 2014 (isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben, phenylparaben, benzylparaben, and pentylparaben), and I would not use a product containing any of those.

At the same time, the EU limited the maximum concentration of Propylparaben and Butylparaben allowed in products, and banned them from use in certain products for children under 3.

Methylparaben and Ethylparaben are safe according to the EU as repeatedly confirmed by the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety.

Parabens have been used since the 50s and are regularly tested.

Preservatives are necessary in products, and the alternatives to parabens have not been used or tested as much as parabens, so my worry would be that they also could cause serious issues.

MiniMum97 · 16/12/2019 18:40

I would definitely not use it. Especially not on my mouth. Parabens are endocrine disrupters and possibly may cause cancer. Not worth the risk for a lipstick imo.

If there was one item I’d need it to have good preservatives, it would be a lip product. Parabens are well researched preservatives and until suitable proven alternatives come on the market, I’m happy to use them. Not that I go look specifically for products with parabens but I do avoid those claiming they don’t contain any.
Personally I’d wear it.

Thank you, everyone. Quite a mixed bag. I'm going to sleep on it. Having tried it out earlier today, my lips are now dry as parchment (normally just use Burt's Bees lip shimmer) so perhaps that'll sway my decision. Thanks again.

Of course.
I used to be ‘ ever so natural’
Wouldn’t touch Parabens etc...
Then l actually started reading and researching properly. Who wrote the article/ was there an agenda?
I am now of the opinion that ‘chemical’ based, unscented products are the way to go!
If the lipstick has a bit of fragrance though, l would still go ahead!
Natural is definitely not always better/ or safer!
