Given money to buy something special

I was recently given £850 (€1000 - the exchange rate has now not gone in my favour with the Tory election results ) to buy something for myself by a very special person in my life.
They are not wealthy and this was a large amount for them to give me. I was totally gobsmacked by their generosity.
I want something that will last- a memento of them. It doesnt have to be stylish or beautiful.
I have enough rings, bracelets snd earrings.
It's not enough to buy my dream bag and I'd rather not put the money towards the dream bag but buy a stand alone item.
Any ideas please ?

How fortunate!

But why would you want anything that is not either stylish or beautiful? Xmas Confused

You’ve posted in S&B but perhaps you might equally think about a set of books or a significant trip? Becoming a Friend of a theatre/opera company? All sorts of things ...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/12/2019 14:08

Could you use some of it for a really beautiful silk scarf and then the rest for a new coat, boots and maybe some lovely books/a beautiful fountain pen?

fishonabicycle · 15/12/2019 14:21

I'd do a trip somewhere really memorable.

beanaseireann · 15/12/2019 14:26

Sadly the giver has a life limiting illness Sadso no chance of going anywhere with them.
Iwanted to get something that when Iooked at it I was reminded of them.
Clothes are out, but thank you for the suggestion.

A limited edition artwork print?

SurpriseSparDay · 15/12/2019 14:29

You don’t have to go with them. I’m sure they’d be pleased to know simply that you’re spending the money on something important to you.

Perhaps you could tell us what sort of things you are interested in?

Miniloso · 15/12/2019 14:29

A painting, a beautiful ornament or piece or something for the home. Personally I’d buy a ring from auction or a bracelet.

Villagegreenpreservation · 15/12/2019 14:33

I’d go antique ring

squantum · 15/12/2019 14:36

I bought a watch when I was in a similar position. It's a lovely, special but wear-every-day thing that gives me happy memories of the person who passed away.

Redtartanshoes · 15/12/2019 14:39

I’d go jewellery or a trip somewhere beautiful. Marrakech.

Whoops75 · 15/12/2019 14:49

Painting or jewelry

mumdom · 15/12/2019 14:58

A watch.

A picture - probably not enough for a painting, but it would certainly buy you a limited edition print from a well known illustrator or graphic artist.

A bangle or bracelet - it doesn’t really matter how many you have already as the more you wear together, the better they look IMO. You could get a charm that reminds you of this special person.

You may feel this is excessively sentimental, but this money is enough to book a professional photographer and pay for prints and a few lovely photo frames or albums if you wanted a permanent record of your loved one.

ZaraW · 15/12/2019 15:52

I've been left a similar amount a couple of times I've purchased furniture and original artwork. You can easily buy something beautiful for your budget. I'm a big animal lover and bought an oil painting by Heidi Wickham.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/12/2019 17:40

You're posting on S&B, hence me suggesting clothes.

SteelRiver · 15/12/2019 17:52

You could commission a piece from a local artist, maybe.

beanaseireann · 15/12/2019 19:34

Thank you for your suggestions

FWIW I would go bangle, print or piece of art, sculpture, or if not your thing a memorable trip somewhere that you have always wanted to go to or depending on cost lifelong membership of NT or similar type of thing
