Are ponchos classy or frumpy?

Not the tasselly ones or with a bold print. But in a neutral colour, maybe plain or a cable knit. Classy? Or frumpy? Or other?

If you're tall and slim they can be classy. If not, they can look awful...also depends on your age. I'm 47 and whilst I'm not short, or particularly big...if I wore a poncho now, I might veer into "mad drama teacher" rather than Boho hottie.

DramaAlpaca · 15/12/2019 02:08

Total frumpsville in my opinion, whatever your age, height or shape.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 15/12/2019 02:15

It’s like anything really, it depends on your height, shape and how you wear it, Rosie and Kate both looking fab here.

I think they’re a bit boho. If you wear them with the right clothes, they can look great!

Bluesheep8 · 15/12/2019 07:14

I love them. I've got several. Age 46

ZaraW · 15/12/2019 07:18

It's a no from me. Hate the Kate Beckinsdale poncho.

Bluntness100 · 15/12/2019 07:19

Generally quite frumpy unless you're tall slim and model like. For every one else it generally doesn't work, makes you look way bigger than you are and a bit like you have a tendency to wear socks and sandals.

PenelopeFlintstone · 15/12/2019 07:20

I have one and didn’t think much about it until I saw a photo of myself, whereupon I realised I looked the size and shape of a fridge.

pictish · 15/12/2019 07:24

If you’re tall and slim they look stylish, if you’re short and dumpy they look frumpy.
I’m a size 10 and 5ft 3, with short legs/long back combo and at 44 a poncho puts me in the frump camp. I’m not fat and I’m quite quirky and alternative in my dress...but I can’t rock a poncho. It’s a shame.

dudsville · 15/12/2019 07:24

I think "classy" and "frumpy" aren't the right words. I agree with poster who said boho. They are a casual version of the Cape, which I think CAN fail into classy or frumpy depending.

NoParticularPattern · 15/12/2019 07:26

Oh god I should NOT have come on this thread. I have two beautiful cashmere ponchos and I adore them. I am not slim but I am tall and I so wish I’d not seen this thread 😂. Perhaps that diet won’t be a bad idea!

pictish · 15/12/2019 07:31

Yes I agree. I want my poncho to look boho rather than classy.

That red, black and beige shawl down there looks like a towel. It’s rubbish.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 15/12/2019 11:06

I used to wear them when pregnant, so they remind me of that.

Victoria Beckham used to look so elegant in them (also pregnant)

I hadn't even considered wearing them now, but worth a thought Xmas Smile

CashFlow · 15/12/2019 11:08

I wear them even though I'm petite, and I think it looks cute on me! Like a little pixie in the woods...

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 15/12/2019 11:26

I these look great, and yes I agree VB rocks a poncho.

I think the very fine knit, plain, soft, drapey ones can look lovely but I'm not a fan of chunky, patterned, tasseled types.

Eventrider1 · 15/12/2019 11:29

Holland Cooper do some lovely capes/ponchos which look very elegant. I love them!

afterme · 15/12/2019 11:31

They have come in and out over the years since the 1970s and I have never worn one. Having said that Rosie looks fab but the long legs help which I haven’t got.
