Help! Foundation novice in need of Christmas party coverage

Hello all 👋
This is very much my first style and beauty thread, as I can be described as having neither of both!
About a year ago, I went to a Clinique counter and had support from the advisor about make up. I really, really don’t wear make up... so I thought the heavy feeling of the foundation was just something to be expected. But, I put the foundation I bought on again last night (first time in about 7/8 months) and it felt awful.
I don’t have brilliant skin, but I can’t bear the feeling of such a heavy foundation.
So - my question is (and apologies for the waffle!): does anyone have any recommendations for a light coverage foundation for 42yo skin, that’s greasy, not many wrinkles/creases (but enough!), occasionally blemished/red skin? Is there such a thing?!

TIA!

Im 55 and use Bare Minerals powder foundation- it’s fab and so light and natural - would never go back to traditional liquid

BlackAndTanDog · 14/12/2019 10:59

That sounds good - I’ve just had a look... so you just apply with a brush?

A hopeful bump for the evening crowd... any other suggestions? Hopefully a bit cheaper if such a thing exists!

If you want a light coverage BB cream might work. I like the L'Oréal one although it only comes in light and fair.

Or maybe try applying the Clinique one you've got with your fingers - just a little pea sized blob. I always find it too heavy when I go to a counter and they apply heavily with a brush.

Good luck!!!

kulaexchange · 14/12/2019 18:14

Sorry - should say that L'Oréal bb only comes in light and dark.

Do you really need to wear foundation? Tinted moisturiser would work to even out your skin tone but not be heavy. Look at Maybelline/ No7 Smile

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 14/12/2019 18:16

IT Cosmetics CC cream is impossible to mess up! It's brilliant! And the brush is fantastic too. It's enough on its own.

Garnier bb cream is great. Apply it with a barely damp beauty blender.

00Sassy · 14/12/2019 18:17

Do you use a moisturiser op? You could perhaps mix some of the foundation with moisturiser and see if that helps.

FlashingFedora · 14/12/2019 18:20

Highly recommended no 7 luminous, it's more like a BB cream with better coverage and they'll colour match you. It's not at all cakey and you can build it for more coverage but it feels like a moisturizer.

BlackAndTanDog · 14/12/2019 19:04

Oh! Thanks for all the suggestions, they’re really appreciated!
I don’t really use moisturiser as when I do I always get a break out.
Are beauty blenders the way forward? Bloody hell - I’m so clueless about makeup! 🤣

I'm 43 and have never got on with foundations, I wear either tinted moisturisers - Bare Minerals or Nars but the Laura Mercier gets a good press on here too - or the IT cream which has slightly more coverage. You could try custom blending by mixing your foundation with moisturiser but really it all depends how much coverage you actually need. For me wearing foundation when you are young masks a youthful complexion, also slides off if you are at all oily, and then when you are older it can settle in fine lines and pores so it's not necessarily needed

Thedevilofsmallthings · 14/12/2019 20:11

I wouldn't use Bare Minerals I've not got on well with it at all, it seems to flake on my skin.
I would go for a tinted moisturiser or bb cream as suggested and a concealer for those bits that need more coverage.
Boots No7 is a good place to start.

Thedevilofsmallthings · 14/12/2019 20:13

Applying with fingers is also fine.

Girlintheframe · 14/12/2019 21:33

I 2nd the IT CC cream! It is brilliant, I wear it when I can't be bothered to spend time applying foundation. It's brilliant and gives great coverage!
Bobbi brown long lasting foundation is fabulous too, looks like skin and feels like skin! No heaviness at all. I got a sample pot to try at home before buying

BarbedWiry · 14/12/2019 22:24

I've used the original Bare Minerals foundation and the matte one- they are both nice. Probably prefer the original but can make you look a bit too glowy and shiny.

I've also used the It Cosmetics CC cream and it's good coverage but I thought it felt heavy on but that's just me perhaps.

I've been using Tarte Amazonian Clay foundation for a year and really like it. It's good coverage, doesn't feel heavy and lasts well.

There's an IT Cosmetics Qvc offer on today. Good value and you can pay in 3 instalments. 30 money back guarantee if you don't like it even if you've used it.
