Dyson hair dryer - worth it if a hair novice (with frizzy/wavy hair)?

Hi all,

I usually air dry my hair, as I can’t seem to get it right with a hairdryer/straighteners mainly due to my own lack of skill. I never know what products I should use, it takes too long to dry, I could spend hours trying to use straighteners and it never looks great, plus I’m time poor with a toddler and baby. I have been wondering more and more if the dyson hair dryer might help? I am at the point where I need to do something with my hair as it looks crap unless it’s up in a bun. My hair is greasy at the roots, but dry and wavy at the ends (the curl probably starts around my ears at the front by right at the crown at the back). It’s thin but I have an absolute ton of it, and it’s almost at my bra strap when down and wet. I wash every other day and on day two it’s a huge puffy, tangled frizzy mess. Does anyone with this hair type have one and think it would help? Is it idiot proof to use, or is it that I won’t get results with it unless I know what I’m doing (both with technique and products)? I really don’t want to waste money so any advice would be hugely appreciated.

TIA

I adore my dyson, I think it's easily worth the money.

I have kinky frizzy but flat hair, and it's totally changed my hair. The condition is much better too. So much better than my old parlux.

Bang goes my theoryGrin

HoHoHolly · 14/12/2019 13:06

@SavoyCabbage we are on "the year of the hair" with my DD. I'd love to hear what combinations worked for your girls. I am wondering if I need to go glycerin free with her but nearly everything is got glycerin in! It gets so matted in a day, we end up having to wet it and comb through every single night.

OP even if you don't buy into the whole curly girl thing, you could try a sulphate free shampoo and a silicone free conditioner. It's transformed mine and DD's hair from that greasy at the roots thing. We now just do one wash of sulphate free shampoo and it doesn't go greasy so quickly in between washes.

not in my opinion. also my hairdresser who has ones said no when i asked him!

Look at the air wrap. It's amazing. Styles as it dries. You can trial for 35 days and send back if you don't like it. Amazing on my hair but not my sisters hair so not for everyone. I've not touched my straighteners for months x

Rhica · 14/12/2019 14:31

Dyson airwrap btw

HoHoHolly
My dd s hair responds best with no shampoo, just wash with conditioner, anything from health food shop has minimal ingredients. But there is a list of mainstream products on curly girl websites.
Then Cantu treatment mask, then rinse that off and Cantu curl custard on sopping wet hair. Scrunch it to break the cast as it dries.
With her hair it’s best to only wash it once out twice a week. She steams it over the kettle In the morning ( boiling the fleas as it’s known in our house), there a tiny dab of the Cantu mask rubbed between wet hands, and through/ over her curls.
The result is a lovely head of bouncy shiny curls.
We only brush it before each wash.

Don’t know if this is helpful

mrssoap · 14/12/2019 15:59

I don't think it's a good idea to blow dry hair like yours, I would put some moose or serum into your hair after washing and let dry naturally

HoHoHolly · 14/12/2019 16:24

@ohyesiam thank you for that. DD's is more wavy than curly at the moment but it's too straight on top to go without brushing.

HoHoHolly · 14/12/2019 16:27

*not brushing!! Combing through with more leave in conditioner every night.

Oldfail · 15/12/2019 08:07

I came into a small amount of money so treated myself.

Yes it's an ordinary hairdryer however I have found my hair quality has improved and more people compliment me on my hair now than they ever did.

Also its much quieter so much better for the ears especially with little ones around

I watched a programme that showed ths average hairdryer decibel is louder than a jet engine when drying near the ears. (Apparently)

Therefore as someone who uses it as an everyday I think it was worth it but It is a luxury item and I would only recommend If you have spare money.

fairybeagle · 15/12/2019 08:20

I got one as a gift and I love it. I have fine, frizzy hair and this has changed my life 🤣
I wash/blow dry every second day and the difference in my appearance for me is huge.
The different heads make it so easy, though I usually just use the straightening head but as PP said the quality of my hair has improved so much, I no longer use straighteners and get lots of compliments.
It takes me about 15/20 mins.

I put a bit of anti frizz in before I use it. I would say I was a complete novice before hand and never blow dried my hair so potentially it would all be possible with a brush and a normal hair dryer but I could never get the hang of it.

fairybeagle · 15/12/2019 08:29

Sorry please ignore my last post. I have the dyson air wrap and I thought this was about that.

I also have the dyson hairdryer (again a gift) and would not recommend over another. It is just a hairdryer

Earlgreybee · 15/12/2019 08:44

I don’t rate the air wrap but I love love love my dyson. I changed from an old expensive t3 and have also purchased a ton of other expensive tools over the year (have insanely thick slightly frizzy hair that is like the little girl with the curl - when it’s good it’s very very good, when it’s bad it’s horrid).

Dyson hairdryer life changing. Light and quick. Can do a respectable blowdry in fifteen mins (takes about an hour in the salon).

Also recommend as an easy entry to curly girl method: As I Am Coconut Co-Wash, available in amazon or Sally’s.

PickAChew · 15/12/2019 08:51

Agree with a pp. Save yourself the money, invest in nothing more than a diffuser and try curly girl method. I have thick, wavy hair that I've Always done battle with but since starting cgm, we've reached an understanding, it takes less time and effort to manage and usually looks so much better. The condition is better than it's been for years, too.

There's a list of beginner products, here.

PickAChew · 15/12/2019 08:53

Just to add that with greasy roots and wavy hair, Co washing might not be for you, so try a lo poo. That's a gentle shampoo without drying sulphates.

MilkyBaa · 15/12/2019 11:04

Wow, thank you so much everyone for your replies. Food for thought definitely.

I have read about the curly girl method before, and wasn’t sure I wanted to go down that route. Maybe I should look at it again. I guess with it the thought of not washing my hair very often is off putting, especially as I exercise quite a lot. I’m also not sure if it would work for my hair - it’s curly underneath but then on top it’s more wavy and at the front it’s almost straight.

I’m going to try and attach photos to show what my hair is like - any and all advice welcome. One photo is day one when it’s still a bit damp and the second is day 2/3 😬

My hair is EXACTLY like yours and it was transformed to the point that it actually changed my life when I had it Yuko straightened 9 months ago. Now I just give it a quick blast with my (excellent) Parlux hairdryer, and it’s ready in less than 5 minutes.

By the way, if you wait until after Brexit you’ll be able to order Parlux from Amazon.it and not have to pay the sales tax. The only silver lining!

LorKell · 15/12/2019 16:51

I had a parlux which is amazing. My DH bought me a Dyson about two years ago now. In my opinion the Dyson dries my hair much faster and as I have been using it long term have found that it has really helped the condition of my hair. Before it was very dry and damaged but the Dyson has improved this.

That said the parlux is a better dryer for styling I would say.
