Can you wear glitter converse with a posh dress and a biker jacket if you are an older woman? (49)

for the millionth time this is nothing to do with age ! Whether you can or can't entirely depends on the combination of the converse, dress and jacket; what each item actually looks like and then looks like together on your body with your styling.

e.g. a pouffy full length ball gown with old oversized aviator jacket in clashing colours, no. A midi length dress made of tulle or satin with a simple upper body and nipped in, fitted simple biker jacket - that might work. That's before we even get to the converse which I think would depend on the occasion more than anything.

You'll look an idiot in the wrong combination whether you were 19, 29, 39 or 49.

See what I mean?

some inspiration. Entirely coincidentally, not just a young womens look it would seem.

I do think it has a little to do with age I'm sorry to say. You can get off with mistakes more easily when you are young.

Totally agree with baileys. I am 56 and would wear that look without a second thought. I really dont understand why anyone would change their style just because they are getting older. I adapt what I wear and perhaps wear it slightly differently to my younger years.

I do think however if you have to ask the question you probably feel it is not your style.

ConverseAndGlitter · 11/12/2019 11:19

Oh no, it's Totally my style.. I just wanted an honest reality check.

Ohhh ... Is it someone else who has committed this terrible faux pas OP? Xmas Grin

I never, never understand this ‘get away with it’ phrase. Who, exactly is going to punish you - for your leisure-wear - if it’s not what they would have chosen?

Wear. What. You. Want.

ConverseAndGlitter · 11/12/2019 11:23

No, no one else. I would be cheering someone else on. I just don't want to fool myself that's all.

Go for it! I’m 51 and I wear that kind of thing. I dress for me and nobody else! Xmas Grin

I understand why you say that but it's only because everyone smiles indulgently when a teenager gets it wrong but recoils in horror if you're over 40. And yet to my mind, experimenting and making the odd mistake is one of the joys of getting dressed.

This isn't going to go away. The older you get, the more your style is going to be policed, so my advice would be start now and wear your outfit. The more you do it, the easier it gets.

dontgobaconmyheart · 11/12/2019 12:20

Regardless of age, some people 'pull things off' and some don't. By pulling it off all we really mean is will other people agree I am enhancing my looks, rather than highlighting my 'flaws' anyway, or 'am I suitably on trend', will this please the masses- it depends how much that matters to you personally vs just wearing what you enjoy, for yourself.

BikeRunSki · 11/12/2019 12:32

I’m 49. I’d wear plainer Cons with a fancy dress and fancy Cons with a plainer dress, but probably not glittery Cons with an evening dress. I still rue the day I gave in to my mum and didn’t wear zebra print Cons under my wedding dress

ConverseAndGlitter · 11/12/2019 12:42

I have red converse but don't feel they will go. The black glitter are quite restrained really.

managedmis · 11/12/2019 12:44

As an aside, is it better to wear black biker jackets open, rather than zipping them?

Miseryisabutterfly · 11/12/2019 16:53

If you’re asking whether you can, you probably can’t. I think you need confidence and conviction to pull something like that off. It’s not to do with age at all.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/12/2019 17:27

Yes

I plan to go out at the weekend wearing trainers, a lace dress and a biker jacket (also 49).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/12/2019 17:27

Never, ever zip up a biker jacket.

iklboodolphrednosedreindeer · 11/12/2019 17:38

I couldn't give a flying fart in a hurricane what anybody thinks about what I wear. It's none of their business unless they're forking out for my wardrobe. Wear what you like OP.
