Waterproof coat for a pear shape?

Advice please on waterproof coats. I'm looking for something smartish, or at least not very sporty (ie doesn't make me look like I'm going hiking or camping, nothing too puffy or baggy etc), long, hooded, with a waist (belted maybe?), colour is preferable to black. I'm slightly pear-shaped (12-14) and anything square or oversized makes me feel masculine.

I keep going in circles: do I want warm and waterproof (which I can only wear in cold weather) or a lighter layer to wear over warmer clothes (which I can use year round)? This is my least enjoyable kind of purchase so I hate to have to find one for summer and one for winter. But maybe that's what I have to do?

I recently bought this, but it's very flimsy so back it goes. Aargh!

In the meantime while I waffle I got caught in a downpour wearing a wool coat and was soaked to the skin in minutes Hmm so clearly I need to sort this out.

As recommended to me by another mumsnetter

The winter coats are lovely and warm whilst also being light, which I really love. I live in mine in winter. The mid season coats are just lined with no padding. The coats vary in waterproof ness but they say to how many mm. I have had mine 3 years, worn pretty much every day November-March and is now losing its waterproofing (was a 5 mm one).
Think I might get another in the sales Grin

Happy Rainy Days trench. The longer one is brilliant because it even has a flap that you zip to the bottom so you can wear a skirt and not get wet.

quickkimchi · 09/12/2019 23:35

Pigeon I was hoping for something a little less parka-ish but glad to hear the quality is good, half the battle seems to be finding something robust enough to last. Do you know what they're made of (cotton, poly etc)?

krist is this the one you mean? www.cyclechic.co.uk/shop/clothing/happy-rainy-days-cycling-raincoat-madonna It ticks all the boxes on paper but in person it's sort of flimsy and flappy. It's the closest I've found to what I'm looking for so I'm tempted to keep it but it's a bit like wearing a pillowcase.

Have a look at Seasalt. I’ve found them waterproof. Not smart but functional. I wear mine all the time. I would also consider Barbour. Their Quarry trench is smart and reduced right now. Their coats really do last for years! My wax jacket is now well over 30 years old. Many of their jackets are parka style but the Quarry isn’t.

North face Suzanne triclimate. Warm with the layer in, but you can take it out. V v waterproof. Slimming as its shaped. www.thenorthface.co.uk/shop/en-gb/tnf-gb/womenis-suzanne-triclimate-jacket-cmh2?variationId=38X&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=Cj0KCQiA_rfvBRCPARIsANlV66MAne3-1zUtiDW756nfXoXBk2xYsQgYZ-zJgeI7IFbVbkItWumToz8aAuIFEALw_wcB

It’s smart and doesn’t look like you are going hiking.

PigeonofDoom · 10/12/2019 09:31

North face are very narrow on the hips ime, although I am quite strongly pear shaped (two sizes difference top and bottom).

My Danefae coat is not waxy, more like cotton but lighter. It’s padded for warmth but not like puffa padding, so a lot more sleek

@PigeonofDoom
It might be worth rewaterproofing your coat rather than having to buy another. This is v effective

Thanks all, I knew you lot would come through Smile
Bubbles Seasalt raincoats are often recommended here but I can't get over the shape of them, maybe I should go try some on. I just don't see myself in one, they look great on the young and fresh-faced and but that sort of shape looks like a bin liner on me.
The Barbour is perfect except for lack of hood (forgot to put in op). A hooded coat is possibly not in the same category as a very smart coat, but ideally I'd like to be able to walk around without an umbrella.
Barsh that's beautiful. Pricey but maybe something to look for in post-Christmas sales. A removable lining is the holy grail of raincoat options!
Pigeon thanks. BigFat is right, Nikwax is amazing. Used it on our tent, it's very easy to use and doesn't change the texture of fabric.

That was the one I meant. It is thin. I wear it with an extra layer underneath in winter. It's really a rain coat rather than a trench that's waterproof..but looks a bit like the latter!

quickkimchi · 10/12/2019 14:00

krist it has a lot going for it, and it's the right compromise between functional and not-too-sporty, I just wish the fabric felt more robust. I have a navy down gilet I can wear underneath to make it warmer, but it's so thin I'm not sure it will be enough. Does the wind go through it?

@PigeonofDoom
I'm reviving this thread even though it's nearly a year old as I am desperately in need of a warm waterproof coat to fit a pear shape (all the parkas I've tried have been too tight around the hips) and I see you recommend Danefae. Do you order directly from their website? And what's the sizing like? I'm a bit nervous about paying for delivery from Denmark and if it's not right I'll have to pay return postage to Denmark at well Confused
