The Ordinary for 40+ skin

Dd has been using The Ordinary Niacinamide and Zinc for her spots for just over a week and I am really impressed with the results, so much so that I want some The Ordinary products myself! I've just been on their website and am very confused. What have you used that you would recommend?

Following this , I haven't got great skin and have heard the ordinary products are good

WhereverIMayRoam · 06/12/2019 21:59

You can email Deciem (the parent company), outlining your skin issues and they will recommend products, they respond within a day or two.

I’m a bit late to the party but I started using The Ordinary in the last few months having heard so many people rave about it. I must say I really like it. Admittedly my skin is reasonably good, a bit on the dry/dehydrated side but no issues as such . I bought what they recommended and I’ve definitely noticed an improvement in the texture and around a couple of small areas of discolouration.

Some YouTube videos help with the different products and what they do

I have oily skin with large pores and still get spots in my 40s

Currently using The glycolic acid toner, niacinimide and hylauronic acid and my skin looks great. Fewer spots, has cleared up even colouring and reduced my pores. Amazing

Balonder · 06/12/2019 22:14

I use the azelaic acid 10% suspension and it has totally cleared up my acne. Also squalene cleanser and the moisturising factors + ha. I'm mid 40s

Crazycrazylady · 06/12/2019 22:40

Using their azelaic acid, hydraluric acid, retenoid and borage oil and find my skin is much better. Not sure what's making the difference between though.

dudsville · 07/12/2019 04:50

My skin is naturally dry and flaky. I looked after it well, but it's so much easier with The Ordinary. I've tried lots from their range but I'm sticking with the squalane cleanser (not add exciting as eve Lom or Emma Hardie but just as good at the task), glycolic acid, the Buffet and the marine hyaluronic acid. I then top it off with my old favourite, blue tub nivea, and then either go to bed or apply makeup up for the day.

emsyj37 · 07/12/2019 10:20

I'm 40 and I use the Niacinamide serum every morning (then Aldi caviar day cream over that) and a couple of times a week I use the glycolic acid toner and the salicylic masque (not both on the same day). I use the granactive retinoid in squalane from time to time, but my main anti-ageing product is Differin gel every night (not The Ordinary, but freely available over the counter and not wildly expensive).

EmpressJewel · 07/12/2019 10:43

I emailed them (and attached a picture of my face) and they recommended

AM
Buffet
Hyalauronic acid
Niacinamide
Natural moisturing factors
Sun screen

PM
Hyalauronic acid
Azaelic acid
Plant derived Squalane

I’m not convinced by The Ordinary I’m afraid. It’s better than cheapo stuff, but not as good as higher end brands on my late 40s skin.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 07/12/2019 11:02

Currently using Buffet in the morning and Retinoid + squalene in the evening. Skin’s looking good. Think I might add in the Niacinamide as I do still get some spots.

I've always been an Elemis kind of person and then tried some of The Ordinary products and they have made much much more of a difference to pigmented areas and texture. My skin hasn't been this clear since my early twenties. I do still use the Elemis day and night cream for hydration but much prefer the active ingredients (and price tag) in The Ordinary.

dorothyinoz · 08/12/2019 16:10

@ArlenesWoodBurningStove Can I ask what products you use please?

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 08/12/2019 18:33

I’ve not been very brave so far. Just the hyaluronic acid and the moisturiser but impressed with both. Dd brought that full coverage foundation and loves it. I prefer the lighter serum one and it’s as good as my Chanel vitalumiere.

Keep thinking I might buy the buffet serum. Tried the glossier one and didn’t like that texture.

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 09/12/2019 11:12

dorothyinoz, I've chopped and changed a bit but here are some products that I like:

cleansing: Clinique Take The Day Off or something similarly greasy. No need for separate eye make-up remover. I find removing cleanser with a cloth the single best thing for skin texture, I just use a normal cotton face cloth. I never use foaming or rinse off cleansers. I only use cleanser at night, in the morning I just splash my face with water.

exfoliating: Clinique 1.0 Clarifying Lotion (this is NOT one of their toners)

I then use Missha Time Revolution. It looks like water but it's really hydrating and plumping. I put it on with my bare hands so it's not being wasted soaking into a cotton pad.

serum: I love Origins Plantscriptions but it's v spendy. I've also liked Hylamide SubQ Skin and Caudalie.

moisturiser: at night I like Night-A-Mins but during the day I find after the Missha and the serum I can just use a tinted moisturiser instead of a separate one then foundation. For this I like REN BB cream and Origins Vitazing. I also like Nars tinted moisturiser but struggled to find the right colour.

dorothyinoz · 09/12/2019 20:01

@ArlenesWoodBurningStove Thank you

stripeypillowcase · 10/12/2019 12:21

stupid question - how do you apply and how much? package only says 'apply a thin layer' Confused

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 10/12/2019 16:40

I find that I need about a quarter of the pipette full to cover my face and neck. I have quite a fat face though. That equates to 3/4 drops.
I do 2 drops onto clean hand and start at the top of my face and work down usually needing another 1/2 drops to do my jawline and neck.

That’s for the hyaluronic acid.

TerpsichoreanMuse · 10/12/2019 22:12

Their caffeine thingy has been excellent for my dark circles. Really improved over a couple of weeks.
