Can I dye grey hair platinum or ash blonde? No yellow goldilocks!

I read you can't because grey hair has no pigment.

Therefore when you dye or highlight it ash or platinmum blonde the "yellow" pigments tend to come through instead. This is fine of course if that kind of golden yellow blonde suits you. But I have "cold" skin tone, blue - so it makes me look very weird.

Anyone had any success with this? Or is it impossible?

My friends mum was a natural blonde but as she went grey, she went for a more platinum look, I’ve never seen it look yellow but I don’t see her loads. Ask a hairdresser and make sure you use a toning shampoo/mask. I have the Redken express blondage (I think but I’m not home to check ATM) and it’s really good.

I had chemo last year and my hair came back salt and pepper. I went to a new hairdresser and showed her how I wanted it and I'm very blonde now. I'm working towards silvery white but it won't happen in one appointment. Ps you do get bright orange hair at some stage and they will sort it and tone it down! You need to be very patient!

I've been told contradictory things about this. One hairdresser recently told me you can't get ash blonde on grey hair and he turned my hair a warm, golden blonde, which wasn't at all what I wanted. Even more recently, a different hairdresser said that was rubbish and she bleached the fuckery out of it (for about the 8th time this year 🙈) but it's now an even worse overly blonde blonde, although all the golden tones have gone. I'm going somewhere else on Friday to get them to tone it all back down cos the overly light blonde makes me look like a wrung out rag.

Check out Jack Martin, colourist, on Instagram. He's famous for achieving grey hair on all colours. He lists products/toners used.

RuggyPeg · 05/12/2019 07:13

Diane - the op is trying to achieve ash blonde, not grey.

If you’ve got money to throw at it, then Mark Anderson Hair is who you need.

The best hairdresser/colourist there is. It actually doesn’t work out that expensive because he cuts so well you only need 2 hair cuts a year. He’s based in London, but it is so worth the trip.

Try a wella toner they work great on the hair to achieve ash , grey , silver etc their are various shades available although a bit pricey they give lovely colour. I usually bleach my hair with powder bleach & 30 volume as my hair is copper wire ginger !!! I have to , to lift the colour then i tone it with a pearl blonde as it has blue tones it tones down any brassy tones left. Hope you find the colour you want 😊😊

RuggyPeg · 05/12/2019 17:01

Mark Anderson is based in Edinburgh isn't he?

MustardScreams · 05/12/2019 17:35

@RuggyPeg no, he’s in Dulwich.

RuggyPeg · 05/12/2019 17:38

Yeah, ignore me, I know who you mean now......the guy who works from his home.

Thank you for all your replies!

Re. the confusion, yes I am GREY trying to go ASH, PLATINUM or WHITE Blonde. Not golden or yellow blonde.

RuggyPeg I wish we could meet up and talk about this. I have had some similar experiences.

I went to London hairdressers (though I live on the coast) expressly to try and get some ash / platinum/ white blonde highlights or slivers.

Unfortunately, hairdressers lied told me a load of nonsense and I ended up with that which I EXPRESSLY said I didn't want i.e. blonde highlights! I looked an awful ageing goldilocks. My natural grey was actually alot nicer and more flattering. They tried to correct it with more colour and toner. And my hair was nearly destroyed in the process, like straw.

Maybe ranout is right it takes a long time.

I do use great silver shampoos and conditioners (Mila) but still want to get a bit of ash blonde/platinum blonde oomph at least framing the face.

As I said, I've read its not really possible to dye grey hair ash/white/platinum because of the lack of pigment.

Thank you Mustard for the recommendation re. Mark Anderson. If I lived closer to London I'd give him a try.

The search goes on ....

At least I'm glad its not just me.

I see loads of older women with gorgeous cool ashy blonde hair, so I know it's possible. I think it'd be easier to train as a hairdresser and do it myself, than to keep looking for a colourist who can do it!

Roussette · 07/12/2019 11:31

It's me too! I am desperate for more ash or even pearly white than what I've got.

I do use L'Oreal Age Perfect Beautifying Silver care or Garnier Perfect Pearly Silver. I think they are semi permanent or something, and they take away any yellow tones which I can't stand.

I like the colour of my hair round my face as it's going more pearly but the rest is a pretty boring brown and white colour. I don't want it dyed at a salon though because I don't trust them to be able to get the effect I want

totally, Ruggy.

One idea I have is next time I visit London, I might just mooch around - get some consultations from various hairdressers - and see if any of them can confirm my understanding and suggest what to do. The alternative, to train as a colourist, has actually crossed my mind.

Roussette I hear ya.
