Titanium dioxide in cosmetics

PrettyShiningPeople · 04/12/2019 16:41

I thought I’d found a reasonably ‘healthy’ talc-free face powder, but recently read about potential issues with titanium dioxide which must powders also seem to contain.
Has anyone had any luck finding a powder with no nasties?

I posted in health as well so apologies for duplicate thread,

Sorry, that should read “most powders”

This sounds mad but I use cornflour! Cheap and effective.

ChessIsASport · 04/12/2019 17:07

I don’t think the lily lolo flawless matte finishing powder has any in it.

PrettyShiningPeople · 04/12/2019 17:08

Cornflour?! Worth a go I suppose!
I’m thinking I might just have to ditch the make up altogether, to be honest on the days I go without I usually forget I’m not wearing any anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion. Lily Lolo ingredients:

INGREDIENTS
MICA, ZINC OXIDE [+/- CI 77891 (TITANIUM DIOXIDE), CI 77492 (IRON OXIDE), CI 77491 (IRON OXIDE), CI 77499 (IRON OXIDE)].

We’ve been led to believe that mineral make-up is more natural and healthier but it could end up being worse !

I think you looked at the wrong one. This is the lily Lolo finishing powder.

If this is the case I'm screwed. I can't use chemical suncream and gave to use mineral ones....

Xmas Shock

What? Glad I don't wear much make up, but I certainly used to 😬.

Thanks for sharing op. I can see the sense in cornflour, but can't say I've tried it.

Wonder if my BB cream is free of Titanium dioxide...

PrettyShiningPeople · 04/12/2019 18:08

Sorry to cause alarm. I think its ok in a cream, but the risk is with powders, eyeshadow, blusher etc... where the product inevitably gets inhaled, potentially causing lung damage.

I understand it depends on the size of the particles (with smaller Nano particles being the worst) but currently this info doesn’t need to be provided with the ingredients.

Would also avoid sun creams in a spray or aerosol form, where particles become airborne.

Titanium dioxide suncreams tend to be quite gloopy

SirVixofVixHall · 04/12/2019 18:32

I stopped using powder sunscreen for this reason, but I am allergic to chemical sunscreen so still use one with it in, just in a cream form.
It is in lots of biscuits , sweets and cakes too, also medicines (is in my HRT) , i wonder if it is also an issue when ingested or in a vaginal pessary.

PrettyShiningPeople · 04/12/2019 18:43

Yes, I stopped eating M&Ms when I realised it was in those, as it has been linked with bowel cancer. I don’t like M&Ms that much.

That is worrying. It is in my vaginal HRT capsules, and the oral equivalent. Also in my sunscreen, which I use most of the year as I am very pale skinned and burn in a flash.
