Men's jumpers (on a woman) - stylish, ever, or just practical?

HepburnKNotA · 04/12/2019 10:24

So, I have realised how much I prefer men's jumpers to women's.

I am tall, slim, athletic build (Ok, a flat chest and shoulders a bit like a rugby player) and they just HANG so much better on me than women's jumpers, no matter how 'slouchy' the style is meant to be. Slouchy women's jumpers make me look a bit scruffy (and larger) tbf, whereas men's ones just look like a nice big jumper.

I have one of my own, and have stolen a couple from my husband Grin

But I need a new jumper now, and I'm debating whether to buy another new men's one or try and find a women's one instead. As I get a bit older and more knackered-looking in general, I do like to make it look as if I'm making an effort with my clothes. Not dolled-up, or anything, I only work from home and do the school run twice a day, but I do like to look as if I've got A STYLE.

Does a (nice, carefully-chosen) men's jumper look AT ALL stylish/like I've made an effort if worn with (nice, thick, possibly patterned) leggings and chunky ankle boots?

Obv jumper will be large/long and bum-covering, not like a knitted dress or a tunic but like, well, a big men's jumper.

I have good legs! (Just a shame about the flat chest and rugby shoulders!)

I am 43.

Is this A Good Look (at all) oh wise S&B gurus, or Just Clothes?

(I also wear nice coats and carry nice bags, if that helps at all)

Oh, and I've just twigged: I do have a massively long torso in relation to my legs, probably why women's jumpers can look wrong on me a lot of the time. Quite often they look boxy or I just spend the whole day pulling them down after having a slightly chilly midriff and/or exposing a bit of my hips to the world.

Of course. A nice jumper is a nice jumper. I wear a lot of men's knitwear as it's often better quality for the £

Lampan · 04/12/2019 10:40

I love men’s jumpers. Currently wearing a lambswool one from Tesco. If you prefer them to women’s ones then just buy whatever you like best!

MilliiMoo · 04/12/2019 10:40

I always used to wear men's wool long jumpers. The styling is longer and slimmer fitting than some women's long baggy jumpers .

RudolphTheRedNosedTwatCat · 04/12/2019 10:41

@HepburnKNotA I have a really long body too and women's jumpers are always too short on me. I'm guessing you have the same problem as me in that a playsuit slices you up the fanny? I'm not tall though, I'm 5ft5 and a bit but can't get ANY play suits to fit. Men's jumpers are longer so at least they don't leave your belly on show.

HepburnKNotA · 04/12/2019 10:54

Rudolph, yep, I would never be able to wear a jumpsuit etc because indeed, as you say, it would slice me up the fanny Grin

I'm 5 foot 8 and proportionally long-bodied so I have a REALLY long body iyswim.

It's the slimmer fit of men's big jumpers that I like, I think.

I am going to browse on uniqlo for a bit now, the man's jumper I bought a year or so ago was a lovely navy ribbed one from there so I will see what they have. I like a ribbed knit, too!

Clothes aren’t any gender, wear what you feel good or comfy in

RudolphTheRedNosedTwatCat · 04/12/2019 11:03

@Hoppinggreen of course they're gendered. Men's clothes are tailored to fit longer legs and bodies, broader chests, room allowance for a package. Women's are tailored to fit breasts, hips and shorter legs and bodies than men.

RudolphTheRedNosedTwatCat · 04/12/2019 11:04

Maybe not gendered, but they're tailored to fit the averages of the sexes that they marketed towards.

Hoppinggreen · 04/12/2019 11:05

I mean that if something fits or you want to wear it then it doesn’t matter if it’s in the men’s/women’s section

HepburnKNotA · 04/12/2019 11:09

I see your point Hopping...

Perhaps then what i'm saying, more, is that men's jumpers fit me much better than women's. And what i'm asking, really, is: does a big long chunky jumper (not a tunic) look stylish (enough) with nice leggings and boots to be considered an actual outfit, or just some random stuff I've thrown on that's clean?! That sounds like a proper outfit to me! I am absolutely as opposite in figure to you as it gets - 5'6" with narrow shoulders, short body and boobs like the prow of a ship. If I wear DH's jumpers they make me look like a melting marshmallow so by inference I think they would look perfect on someone with your figure.

A warm jumper, skinny jeans and boots is my winter uniform. It's jewellery, jacket, scarf etc that make it an "outfit" or not, I think. Or even just a swipe of lipstick.

LaPampa · 04/12/2019 11:16

I wear men’s jumpers - cashmere from Uniqlo - with jeans or a skirt all the time. Year round.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 04/12/2019 11:33

I often buy men’s jumpers because they’re longer in the body and arms than women’s. The trick is, I think, look for plain colours, (not the blokey sort with coloured stripes or checks), and preferabley without that wide knitted band at the bottom that men’s jumpers often have to pull them in at the hips.

Good quality wool, like fine merino or merino/silk and you’re good to go. I particularly like men’s polo necks in fine merino sized up a bit. Nice amount of slouch and long enough to look good over a skirt or narrow trousers.

Lamentations · 04/12/2019 13:12

I raid menswear for lots of things and as a result wear nicer and better fitting jumpers, jeans, hoodies, t shirts, tracksuit socks and pyjamas. Do it.

Lamentations · 04/12/2019 13:13

Tracksuit bottoms*

Singsongbird · 04/12/2019 13:19

Mens jumpers are lovely to wear. Loads in Next to choose from. I agree they fit better in a simple, effortless way (imo!)

SummerPavillion · 04/12/2019 14:14

I'm not the right shape for them but wish I was. It's so much easier to get a straightforward no-nonsense jumper for men. Love the cuddly oversized vibe too, but my main good feature is my waist and they hide it, whilst barely accommodating my hips!

goose1964 · 04/12/2019 18:02

I find women's jumpers are often too short in the sleeves for me.

MrsSpenserGregson · 04/12/2019 18:05

Wearing a man's crew-neck or v-neck jumper was all the rage when I was a teenager in the 1980s Grin and it's a style that I still love. I can't go past M&S without popping into the men's jumper section.

AnuvvaMuvva · 04/12/2019 18:50

I LOVE men's jumpers. They're always so much more elegant in the way they slouch, probably because they're narrower in the waist.

MayFayner · 04/12/2019 19:00

I think when you’re 5’8” and slim you can get away with anything really.

I’m only 5’6” but otherwise very similar to how you describe yourself- long body etc., and apart from my sized-up Uniqlo cashmere crew-necks (which I tend to live in) I get the riding up waist problem with jumpers too.

I’m going to try on a few of DH’s jumpers tonight Smile
