Greasy hair with a dry scalp

Help ! My hair looks like a greasy mess the day after washing it but I have a very sore flaky scalp that is dry? I’ve tried body shop ginger, vosene, tea tree shampoo etc but nothing really helps! Any suggestions 😊

I swear by T-Gel shampoo, sorted my scalp out.

DariaMorgendorffer · 08/12/2019 21:51

Have you tried nizoral? Works for me to a point. Been plagued with flaky scalp my whole life.

chocolatespiders · 08/12/2019 21:56

You could try some good quality coconut oil on your scalp only.
Dd has dry scalp and we have been using oilatum shampoo.
It might be the SLS in shampoo making your scalp sore.
I have greasy hair and use LUSH I love juicy shampoo

This sounds like sebhorreic dermatitis. I’d use Nizoral shampoo.

Nizoral is good, as is any shampoo with selenium sulfide. It doesnt make it go away forever though unfortunately.

Stop shampooing. Use dry shampoo for a while. Look up methods of going "no poo" (really).

My hair and scalp improved dramatically when I switched to once weekly washing. At first my hair was disgustingly greasy after a day, as always, but dry shampoo and an up-do made it acceptable. After a few weeks the grease just stopped being produced and my scalp stopped being skanky.

What's your hair like?

If you're naturally wavy or curly then I'd highly recommend the Curly Girl method.

Avoid sodium lauryl sulphate in shampoo and silicones in conditioner for a while.
The SLS is harsh on your scalp and to compensate you produce more oil.
Do one last wash with your current shampoo (to wash out the build up of silicones which can also make your hairy greasy) then follow with a silicone free conditioner. Your hair might take a while to feel great but your scalp should be much happier.

I had this problem and swear by moo-goo shampoo & conditioner( you must use both)
I use nothing else now and my hair and scalp are great.
I’ve reduced how often I wash my hair,
I use dry shampoo as needed.

Give it 1 month & good luck

I had exactly the same issue. I still do sometimes but I've found that washing my hair less and staying away from sls, parabens etc does help. I cannot use dry shampoo however as it seems to exacerbate my itchiness. So I just wash my hair less.

I've gone from washing every day to every third day and would like to get to once a week. It takes a while to get used to but it worked for me. At least for now....

My hairdresser has recommended a scalp exfoliation treatment that I think I'll try if my itchiness returns.

Sarcelle · 08/12/2019 22:52

I think hairdressers are pushing the same exfoliation treatment at the moment. Keratese?

I find that Nizoral works if you use it as per the instructions.
