Hair style advice for straight and stringy

I've always had awful hair.
It's mousy brown with lots of grey that I have highlighted every six weeks, the colour is the best I can get it so don't think I'll change it.
But I need a new cut. My hair is poker straight, it's always been fine but the grey has made it coarse.
For years I had a chin length bob which made me look frumpy, now I've grown it it looks lank and stringy.
Cropped won't suit me, I'm tall and a bit overweight so have the potential to look manly especially with my chin hairs.
Can thin hair ever look stylish at shoulder length?
Pinterest is not my friend, the models are all gorgeous.
Any advice welcome.

Sorry no help but have the same hair so watching with interest.

I can’t help with the style. But if you’re paying for highlights every six weeks why don’t you change the colour a bit. Go blond for example. As that might make you feel better about your hair and image generally.

My hair is straight, straggly and horrendously fine. I can't stand it short. It simply doesn't suit me and makes my less than feminine nose look like concord. The second my hair gets near shoulder length it looks I have alopecia because it is so dreadfully fine. I'm incredibly self conscious about it. I have 75 hair extension bonds put in not for length but for thickness. I get about 5 months out of the extensions at a cost of £150 which is bearable but it absolutely transforms my hair and makes me feel like I at least look normal. Well worth considering if you long for longer hair when your natural hair is fine.

Similar hair here. Sadly, you may have to accept that your hair will never grow long. I find that bobs work best - make sure the bottom is a blunt cut to make it look thicker. Use texturising and volume boosting sprays/products - including dry shampoo on really bad days.

Thank you for the comments.
I've never considered extensions but will ask my hairdresser.
I've resigned myself to a bob again but might try a side fringe.

Go blonder. It throws so much light onto your face and you glow. Also more blond highlights would make the hair shaft swell and create the illusion of thicker hair. You may have to change your clothes and makeup if you go blonder but that's the fun part and gives you a new lease of life Wink

Maybe a body perm?

witchpotential · 02/12/2019 12:03

I am already quite blonde Milli which is definitely better than brown and grey.
Will ask my hairdresser about a body perm, although it's not in the best condition.
When I've been to the hairdresser it does look good which I suspect is down to a good blow dry technique so now I'm wondering about splashing out on the Dyson dryer with attachments. Would be a big investment though.

Get your hairdresser to do you a curly blow dry before you commit to buying anything. Especially a dyson - there’s literally hundreds of tongs you can buy which will do the same thing so you can try out the style first.

I have a very similar problem. Used to have loads of fine blonde hair with a natural wave. It was so easy. Now it's grey-brown, there's a lot less of it and it's straight and lifeless. I don't have the bone structure to wear it short and it's too fine for layers or anything clever. I'm limited to bobs and they are so frumpy.

I've been going blonder, but the more highlights the drier it gets. Use too much conditioner or product to correct that and it just goes stringy. Interested in the idea of extensions but I'd be scared that they'd cause damage.

I'm so envious of those who can go short. I've tried numerous times over the years and have never found a shorter style that suits. Do let us know if you find a solution, OP – you're not alone in this.

I wouldn't have a perm of any kind with bleached hair. Often your hair will break off in handfuls and melt off. Happened to me. Awful experience.
