Braces for adults?!

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can help. I have good top teeth, there is no over laps; they are all perfectly straight however my bottom teeth I absolutely hate!!!

As I've got older I've got even more drawn to them. They make me feel uncomfortable now smiling with my mouth open incase you see my bottom teeth!!

So I'm looking to get braces on my bottom teeth. My question is can you have braces just on your bottom teeth? If so? How much would it likely be? Xx

I’ve no idea about price, but totally possible just for bottom teeth, or you could probably have Invisalign which would be more expensive than braces.

@Didiusfalco

That's great thank you. what is the difference?

Sorry never heard of that? Xx

I paid £2300 for a single arch earlier this year for top teeth. This is for clear, ceramic fixed braces. However lots of people choose to go for metal braces for the bottom as less visible, and that brings down the cost quite a bit.

@chlo04 Invisalign is where they make removable retainers that slowly reposition your teeth. They’re supposed to be very good, but won’t work on more serious orthodontic cases. My teeth needed too much work for Invisalign but I got very good results from traditional braces.

@Didiusfalco @Bovneydazzlers amazing thank you.

Can I ask how long the treatment took both of you before your teeth was straightened? Xx

Mine was about two years, but my teeth were very bad and I think it could be a lot less.

TheCWord · 30/11/2019 23:24

I got bottom arch lingual (hidden) braces for £1800 but this was in an expensive area. And yes he just did the lower arch

NowYouListenToMeFella · 30/11/2019 23:24

I currently have braces on my top arch. Clear brackets with tooth coloured wire. On since 19th March and booked in to have them off the 9th March next year. Cost €2800.

Happy to answer any questions.

TheCWord · 30/11/2019 23:25

Have a look on Groupon You could get it for a lot less

Has anyone used smile direct?? They seem reasonable but I don't know anyone who has used them?

7thlevelofthecandycaneforest · 30/11/2019 23:41

It depends on your bite as to if they’ll just do a single arch. Fixing the bottom might make your bite not quite right which in itself would cause problems. I wanted invisible braces going in but in the end went for metal ones as they were better for the treatment I needed. It was the best decision I ever made.

Bovneydazzlers · 01/12/2019 04:59

Mine took 15 months, it was almost 12 months but I had a slightly shortened root where I had bashed a tooth in the past so they took it slow.

My orthodontist was pretty scathing about non orthodonist trained solutions (I’m not sure if smile direct falls into this category), whilst if you’ve just got mild cases it might be okay, but the amounts of twists and complicated adjustments she did to my wires, I’d say I agree if you’ve got anything more than just mild crowding, and if you are only doing one arch the bite is important to monitor.

I’d phone around a few local orthodontists, maybe ask on local Facebook groups for recommendations, then go into a couple for an initial chat.
The orthodontists will advise what options you have (eg mine advised not Invisalign as she didn’t think it would fully straighten them, and id end up in fixed braces to fully fix anyway.

Flamerouge · 01/12/2019 09:37

Another one here whose ortho was not a fan of non-orthodontic intervention. Might be ok as PP say if you only need very mild correction, but bearing in mind that you are (presumably!) not a teenager your teeth will have had many years of being where they want to be - so they need to be moved gently but also permanently.

My experience was 18 months of braces on the top and bottom teeth. Really happy with the result; most people who noticed and commented were interested in having their own teeth straightened - and lots of people didn't notice at all! I was 42 when mine went on and 43 when they came off. And I should have done it ten years earlier!

Ineedahouse · 02/12/2019 06:26

I'm thinking about getting braces next year - my dentist only does invisilign last time I asked so i assume I will have to go elsewhere.
If I get my braces done by anotherdentist privately can I still keep my nhs dentist for everything else?
Please could I also ask if the cost everyone paid for fixed braces was all in one go or per visit to the dentist on a gradual payment basis? Thanks!

Bovneydazzlers · 02/12/2019 06:32

Orthodonists will offer a payment plan, paying each visit. I paid upfront for a 5% discount, this will vary between practises.

Yes you keep your normal dentist as well as having an orthodonist. The orthodonist will recommend 6 monthly visits to the dentist as dental hygiene is really important, and more difficult, with braces.

Rhodes2015again · 02/12/2019 06:45

@Rosere I haven’t used smile direct but I’m coming to the end of treatment with straight teeth direct.
It’s worked and it was cheaper (quoted £3200 at private dentist vs £1300 for this)

Rhodes2015again · 02/12/2019 06:50

Just wanted to add mine was a mild correction, although a very twisted front top tooth which had pushed one next to it out of line. Bottom teeth were completely straight but still have aligners for them.
Didn’t want to pay over 3k to fix just 2 teeth.

Rosere · 02/12/2019 17:43

Thank you. Smile Direct have some pretty awful reviews (just saw them on Facebook) . We are going to see an orthodontist instead. Both of us had braces in our teens, both have had movement of our teeth. Id far rather have someone look into my mouth and check up on my bite.
