Mum boots

When does a boot become a "mum boot"?

(Disclaimer: Yes I know we're all mums so we all in theory wear mum boots but this is for those who know what I mean and aren't offended by the term!)

OP posts:

These...I remember my mom wearing this exact style 20 years ago...but they’re from topshop so shouldn’t be mumsy but who knows anymore!

I always think mom boots are whatever your mom wore so it’s different things to different people.

I love those mum boots Banjo!

Chocmallows · 16/12/2019 01:26

Fit Flop boots are comfy and yes mum boots but I don't care

vitaminC · 24/12/2019 23:39

I think the concept of mum boots is basically that many women "give up" on style and fashion after having kids and stop spending money on themselves, so carry on wearing whatever shoes/boots they owned pre-kids, which are often quite dated by now.
So, the current incarnation of mum boots is whatever was in fashion around 5-10 years ago. Skinny jeans tucked into smooth, black knee boots, original Uggs and those clumpy black ankle boots with heavy soles and studs are examples I still see around.

Craftycorvid · 24/12/2019 23:47

Hm, so if Doc Martens and Fly/Converse will soon be declared ‘mum’ that should mean in fashion rotation terms that those Pavers will soon be acutely on trend? Hmm. For the record, many of the young lasses hereabouts wear DMs and Converse. Docs seem to transcend ages and personal styles (says she - habitual Doc wearer due to not coping with the pain of heels).

Tinyandpetite · 25/12/2019 02:05

I bought these and wore them today. I don’t care, I really like them.

I have Fly, Converse and Docs. Several pairs of the first two. No hope for me then 🤣

AJTracey · 25/12/2019 12:56

Rocket Dog, Fly Boots, hiking boots in town (not actually hiking), fitted knee highs with skinny jeans, M&S, Asda, Sainsbury's boots are all seriously uncool boots.

DMs and Converse are cool mum boots as all ages wear them too.

Attached are nana boots.

RubbishRubbishRubbish · 25/12/2019 12:57

Why are Fly boots uncool?

HermioneWeasley · 25/12/2019 13:06

I hate the derogatory nature of the “mum” description- what the hell is wrong with being a mum?

Craftycorvid · 25/12/2019 15:40

Yes, what’s wrong with Fly?

hifolks · 25/12/2019 19:10

Vitamin C , what is ok to wear please?

Eesha · 25/12/2019 23:35

@vitaminC i think I recognise myself in your description though I look great when out in the evenings, just pretty drab during my day to day life. ARGHHH.

Ninkanink · 25/12/2019 23:40

@BanjoStarz those definitely aren’t mum boots. Too high, too current, too stylish.

I don’t get het up about the term - probably because I wear plenty of things that some people would probably consider fugly. I don’t care, I can carry them off.

BanjoStarz · 26/12/2019 16:03

@Ninkanink you seem to have missed the point of my post.

It’s nothing to do with how stylish you are or consider yourself to be, in my opinion they’re mum boots as I can remember my mum wearing that exact style - the elongated squared off toe, rounded block heel, inevitably paired with a slightly too short pair of bootcut jeans are literally the stuff of 90’s family memories.

It’s why the term is so subjective Hmm

Ninkanink · 26/12/2019 16:08

Yes, and I wasn’t actually arguing with you. However in overall usage on S&B that’s not really what mum boots are (although as you’ve said it’s subjective anyway - it’s a vague term and means quite different things to different people). I wasn’t necessarily disagreeing with you, just saying that actually, they’re not really what most people would call mum boots. Not quite ubiquitous, comfortable and ‘sensible’ enough.

mellicauli · 26/12/2019 16:11

These threads are so dangerous, you click on a couple of the links to the hideous boots then the internet serves you ads for horrendous footwear for the next 6 months.

Drizzzle · 26/12/2019 16:14

So, what boots are currently the opposite of mum-boots?

dkl55 · 26/12/2019 16:23

Hiking boot style boots are cool and chunky heel boots. Not high heels. If you look on sites like MyTheresa or Net-a-Porter there's lovely options and you can then look for similar and cheaper in high street shops. Zara shoes tend to be cheaper and "unmumsy"... personally hate that term tho. There's no such term for men "dadsy" Hmm

dkl55 · 26/12/2019 16:24

Or urban outfitters!

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 26/12/2019 18:02

It’s about style though isn’t it? My 13yr old dd can wear dm’s vans etc and look cool because she’s young and and has a good sense of style. Albeit one that would probably look ridiculous on a 40 something.
However if I wear her vans with my maxi or midi dress/skirt and a more sedate hairstyle and make up I look a bit ‘mumsy’ however I’m 43 and don’t really give a fuck. I look nice and I make an effort, I don’t want to be my daughters best friend and the cool mum. Yes i want her to like me and respect me but I’ve had my time being ‘cool and edgy’ I wear what I like and at 43 have the confidence to know what looks good on my shape.

Skyejuly · 26/12/2019 22:01

Hm I think I have mum boots. Heavenly feet ones. I love them! Only one of our group who didnt have sire feet in rome and so comfy. I'm 32 :-)

Skyejuly · 26/12/2019 22:02

I have nana boots now I've read back. Hmm okGrin
