Messy bun

PinkDaydreams · 30/11/2019 07:24

Morning all!
Had my hair in a bun for years (hate my long hair and can’t do anything with it as it’s so thick and frizzy) anyway, how do I perfect a messy bun? When I try it looks frizzy. I have to have it tight (think ballet dancer) but I would love to be able to do a messy bun.
Please help!
Thank you Flowers

Get it cut short?
Why have long hair if you hate it?

PinkDaydreams · 30/11/2019 07:47

I’ve suggested short but it’s that thick and curly it’ll end up like a mushroom!! Honestly it really gets me down, I’d love it short but would be gutted if it went mushroom like

You should buy a donut sponge (chemists or primark) and wrap hair around it. Then play with hair pulling strands out.

PinkDaydreams · 30/11/2019 07:52

I’ve got one of those but ended up looking like Linda from eastenders! I need to practice with it I think.

You need a really good hairdresser who really understands curls, short needn't mean mushroom! I'm not curly myself, but come from a very curly family- honestly a proper curl specialist is a game changer!

Following. I too seem to have a choice of long or mushroom 🤪 or hours with the ghd’s. One long hair option I sometimes use instead of a bun is a long plait, or after it’s washed wind into a low bun, secure with a baby sock and sleep in it. In the morning I have slightly better behaved curly hair with this method

MustardScreams · 30/11/2019 08:07

I’ve got similar hair and I’ve bought myself a GHD Glide - game changer! Takes me 5 minutes to have smooth, non-frizzy hair in the morning now.

For a messy bun I gather all my hair up on top of my head, not too tightly and I don’t wind the hair round into a bun shape, if that makes sense! Just sort of hold it up and then use a hairband to shove it into a bun. I then use a second hairband to secure, and tease bits of hair out around my face/the bun.

I’m howling !!! I also have the mushroom / long choice
I coat my hair with Pantene conditioner, leave twenty minutes and rinse... good hairdryer with a massive round barrel brush. Then tie up, messy looks better when the hair is smooth I think.

PinkDaydreams · 30/11/2019 08:19

That’s what I struggle with, can’t get it smooth unless I straighten it but it takes over an hour to straighten with ghd’s and I don’t have the time (or patience) when I have a toddler running round!

When I was little mum chopped off my past the bum length ringlets, cut to my ears and it looks bloody awful! It looks mushroom crossed with LEGO man hair 😂

Hair in pony, back comb the middle a little , wrap round and clip in place with bobby pins :)

TipseyTorvey · 30/11/2019 08:57

I have mixed afro hair (as am mixed) but this might work for you as well. I spray with water and , leave in conditioner in the evening and put it into two plaits then in the morning use fingers to comb (not properly) and pull into a pony tail then twist the hair round. Gives me sort of fake defined waves which look non frizzy. Also means my takes minutes in the morning.

CalamityJune · 30/11/2019 09:19

The key to a messy bun is texture so it's better on second day hair with a bit of dry shampoo, and maybe even a little bit of backcombing.

I tend to do: head upside down, grab hair roughly with splayed fingers and roughly pull the hair through. Secure with a strong bobble and secure loose bits with a second small one and pins. Pull out around the face, nape and crown. Hairspray.

PinkDaydreams · 30/11/2019 09:31

Maybe that’s where I’m going wrong, I’m not using pins, I use another bobble to secure it.

Have you tried something like this?

PinkDaydreams · 30/11/2019 10:16

@justilou1 thank you for the video, just watched it. I have super thick hair, I think it would be good for using the day after I’ve initially straightened it but I don’t think I’d get the look of a straightener just using that baby itself. Might see if I can test one and see what it’s like

I use a smallish donut as my hair is fine and roughly wrap it round. I use tiny claw clips (from Primark) to secure the hair randomly as near to the donut as possible so they are pretty much invisible.

justilou1 · 30/11/2019 11:19

See if you can try one somewhere. I have one, but my hair is different. (Mine’s super-fine - like cat hair, but lots of it.) It’s been a game-changer for me. I have friends with Mega-thick hair (course) who also love it. I still wouldn’t recommend buying anything until you’ve tried it, though!
