Product for dry hair/brittle/spilt ends

My hair is thick-ish, straight, a bit course in texture (could be pre-menopausal). I colour it, blow dry it and sometimes straighten it. I've had it trimmed but it still doesn't shine anymore like it use to! Just looks a bit dry. I use Herbal Essences shampoo for coloured hair and Aussie colour matt miracle conditioner. I use a heat protection serum before blow drying and a heat protection spray if i use straightening.

Is there a product and or routine that can transform my hair? make it look like hair at least! I did try the coconut thing a couple of years ago but i didn't or rather my hair didn't get on with it. I can't afford £££ so anything purse friendly from Boots or Superdrug would be ideal. I also think my brush (which i use for clow drying) isn't the best, its a large barrel type one but the spikes are very 'sharp' and hard, almost torture like! Am i right in thinking i need a softer one?

I'm afraid my tips are pricey. I developed hair like you describe when I was in my 40s. After trying mountains of products I ended up with Aveda. I did also change my brushes to softer ones. I don't straighten my hair but are you using any hair protector before applying heat?

Maui Coconut shampoo and the coconut curl smoothie for thick curly hair is great. I use the curl smoothie (in a jar) as a conditioner as in after shampooing, leave on for a few mins and rinse. It is meant to be used on dry hair but I find it works well as a general conditioner. It's from Boots. Don't be put off by the "coconut" in the title - it doesn't really smell coconut-y or behave like raw coconut oil, I've never got on with that either. I've tried quite a few in this range but these particular ones I find work really well. The Childs Farm spray detangler is good as a leave in conditioner for combing through afterwards.

Also the ORS Castor Oil is great for taming frizzies, used sparingly.

Oh and brushes - please throw away anything sharp or spiky, if it feels rough on your hand, it will definitely rip your hair! Use a wide tooth comb as much as possible for general detangling and brushing, with a soft natural bristle brush for surface smoothing. If you must use a brush, a soft large paddle brush with flexible spikes is far gentler.
