Vera Wang Engagement Rings??

MyNameIsMrsGrumpy · 29/11/2019 15:16

Hi all,

Dh has offered to buy me a new engagement ring, and this one from Vera Wang has caught my eye?

www.ernestjones.co.uk/webstore/d/5514983/vera+wang+18ct+white+gold+0.95ct+diamond+cluster+ring/?cm_mmc=SEM_Google:EJ%7C%7CDiamonds%7C%7CDiamond%20Rings%7C%7CMedium:EJ%7C%7CDiamonds%7C%7CDiamond%20Rings%7C%7CAll:5514983&gclid=Cj0KCQiAoIPvBRDgARIsAHsCw09o26KT2b5LGYnmGpYJVgL9_ooaLGBONQP7OmUg7NZEeddLQG0MbIkaAu_qEALw_wcB

Has anyone got one? Or a similar one? I’ve got some time tomorrow so will pop into the nearest jewellers and see what else they have!

Seems like a lot of money for not a lot of diamonds I think I just like the style.

Any help would be much appreciated

When STBXH and I chose my engagement ring, we went to the jewellery quarter in Birmingham. I wasn't sure at all what I wanted and the benefit of going there was that I had an infinite amount of engagement rings to choose from. They were a much better price than mainstream jewellers. I ended up with a 1ct diamond solitaire on a platinum band. It was a good few years ago now but it worked out about £1500 less than we would have paid in a mainstream jewellers for a comparable quality diamond on platinum. We briefly looked at some designer rings before we went to the jewellery quarter and to have comparable to what we bought would have worked out at more than double the price. It's well worth shopping around to find the best quality diamond for your money.
I was put off having gold because it is a very soft metal. I know a lot of people who have had gold rings become misshapen after a few years of use.

Second recommendation of purely diamonds, book an appointment and check it out. They work with your budget.

This is incredibly poor value for money. I would definitely try an independent jeweller. They might be able to make something similar, for a better price.
Tiffany jewellery is similarly poor value, probably 40% is for the blue bag.

I know you're looking at brand new rings but have you considered vintage rings? You'll get more diamond/gem stones for your money buying vintage. Have a look at this site, there are lots of amazing rings here and some big brands like Carter & Tiffany.

Cartier not Carter

I know a lot of people who have had gold rings become misshapen after a few years of use.

I've heard people say this before but I don't know anyone who has had this problem. I thought it was more often a problem if wearing two different carat golds together (though prepared to be corrected!).

I've worn my mum's gold wedding ring for the last 10 years and she wore it every day for 50 years before that and it still holds the same shape.

Www.eragem.com have some lovely vintage rings with new stones. They also have a good selection of sapphire engagement rings

Lndnmummy · 03/12/2019 07:17

You have a very healthy budget! To make the most of that budget I’d really go to Hatton gardens or the jewellery quarter (even if taking from the budget to fund trip/hotel)

Soontobe60 · 03/12/2019 07:23

Before you buy, really think about having it made. My DD wanted a similar wedding and engagement ring combo, around 5k to buy ready made.
She went to Birmingham jewellery quarter and had one commissioned for half the price. They went for a weekend, had a lovely time and still were quids in. For such a high value item, it really is worth the trip.

Why don't you have your existing rings remade?

LightDrizzle · 03/12/2019 07:40

Excellent suggestion from Northern Gravy. Blue Nile are excellent if you know what you want.
Go for a GIA XXX cut and compromise on colour - J should be fine with an excellent cut, don’t pay for what you can’t see. I bought my platinum diamond studs from Blue Nile after help from an assistant who matched my very tight Pricescope inspired specs, they are great, and so much cheaper than a “quality” brand.
My engagement ring is from De Beers and amazing, as is their after sales service, but I couldn’t pay for something from there myself. I could have got as good quality from Blue Nile for so much less money. I have a plain platinum solitaire and it’s so worth free and timeless. However the halo Northern posted is lovely too.

LightDrizzle · 03/12/2019 07:55

Just spotted your total budget! You could get a marvellous set from Blue Nile for that.
Would you consider a plain wedding band and getting an eternity at a later date? Then you could focus budget on the central diamond, which is the most important element. I thought I wanted a diamond wedding band but fell in love when I tried on the matching platinum band, and I love the fact that it is so robust that I almost never need to take it off. Being platinum, the scratches can be polished out, which De Beers do for free if requested at the annual free service. It would be peanuts to get it done if paying.

Fake rock until you find it or it finds you nobody will know unless you tell them 😊 whatever makes you happy! Just my suggestion. Diamonds are overrated love is what counts

Oochiewalla · 18/12/2019 18:22

I work in the jewellery industry. This range is notorious for poor build quality, and EJ after sales is very poor. If you like the halo designs I’d suggest a brand called Hearts on Fire. They have great quality of stone cut, and the quality is fab (I don’t work for this company but I do sell numerous brands and have found them to be one of the best. www.heartsonfire.com/diamond-jewelry

HermioneWeasley · 18/12/2019 19:15

No! It’s awful. Halos are awful. Diamond dust rings that will catch on everything and are uncomfortable to wear are awful.

There’s a reason why solitaires are a classic.

iMombie · 18/12/2019 23:16

I highly recommend www.gemsdesignandrepairltd.co.uk
The jeweller is very experienced, was extremely knowledgeable and can work with you on designing your ring. He even got a selection of diamonds for me to look at and choose from. It was a great experience and I felt I got value for money too.x

peachgreen · 18/12/2019 23:38

Oh, thanks @ThePortIsSunny, now I'll never know true happiness until I own this ring www.gatsbyjewellery.co.uk/product/mid-century-2-20-carat-ruby-diamond-cluster-ring-circa-1960

Sammy011970 · 11/12/2020 12:23

Hi there,
I'm a little late to this conversation, but I am selling my Vera Wang engagement ring - this model infact. It's only a year old and my fingers are both too fat for me to wear it now.

It's in absolute perfect condition. If anyone is interested I would certainly take an offer before going on ebay.

Thanks:)

Sam
