Help with really thick hair

Dd is 13 and has crazy thick hair, I have never seen anything like it. It’s also naturally wavy.
Now hormones are kicking in I noticed that it was looking quite greasy and she told me she struggles to wash it as it’s so thick. So I gave it a go to help her and it’s ridiculous, I used so much shampoo and it’s so difficult to get it all through. Especially at the nape of her neck.
It’s also breaking where she has to tie it up for school as she has to do it so tight to stay in place due to the weight of it.

At a loss what to do with it. She isn’t keen on the idea of cutting it short. I don’t know if an undercut is a solution, but don’t know if school would allow it?

Any suggestions on how to deal with it and shampoos which are good for thick hair please?

She is my head bridesmaid in 3 months and wants her hair to look amazing.

Those brazilian blow dries are expensive, I've had a few and they do not last 12 weeks. More like 7 if you're lucky and try not to wash your hair as often as you'd like.

SlightlyBonkersQFA I have found them less effective the more I had, bizarrely. My first one was amazing though and I didn’t have to use straighteners for weeks afterwards. I’m not sure if they’re best done regularly to keep up. I used to have a couple a year, usually before holidays.

My dd gets her hair thinned out by a great hairdresser. Took a while to find the right one. It has made a significant difference & she finds it so much easier to manage. Most bobbles wouldn't contain it and looking after it it used to drive her crazy!

She also uses a good conditioner, and occasionally straightens it, using revlon uniq one spray to protect it as much as possible.

Try the curly girl method - changed my hair completely!

SlightlyBonkersQFA · 28/11/2019 21:53

@MissCharleyP interesting you say that, because I found that too. I thought the hairdresser was being too mean with the product. That they'd have had to have opened another bottle to fully do my hair because it was so thick and they weren't prepared to do that. That's what I thought was going on....

I have super thick hair and a lot of it.

Hair oil is my saviour, the Kerastase one is good, as is Mythic Oil. Do this when her hair wet and again after it’s dry on the ends.

Shampoo- Kerastase Bain Satin or Supersoft by Redken.

Conditioner- Kerastase Bain Majistral or just use Pantene, but lots of it.

My roots and face get greasy in between washes, I use Batiste in between. Thick hair needs a rest from washing every day.

A very good hair dresser- many are incapable of cutting thick hair without ruining it with thinning scissors. Where are you? I have a fab hairdresser in teddington, who is excellent with thick hair.

Do you have a powerful shower? If you don’t use a big jug.

Do not do a Brazilian blow dry, they’re awful.

@SlightlyBonkersQFA I’ve heard others say it as well. I had a couple done about 6 months apart at different salons which were great. I then had a repeat about 6 months later at the second salon and found it a bit meh. Had a couple of Kerastraight which I didn’t find that effective at all. My hair is short now so I can manage it myself!

Get her some invisibobble products from boots - much better than normal bobbles etc for holding a load of hair and don't seem to pull your scalp as much with the weight of them. Last much longer too.

And here it is worn down. I can also get it into a decent ponytail etc without it being too noticeable

My eldest has incredibly thick hair. I thought conditioner would help (curly girl method is just conditioner isn't it?) but some are saying no conditioner here.

Does no conditioner help thick hair? I thought it would help with tangles?

My dd has hair like this. She spent 40 mins in shower last night washing it. Longer than normal for some reason.
She hates having it cut/being touched - can anyone recommend a good hair dresser for this in north leeds please?

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 01/12/2019 16:37

Thanks @ alphaechokiwi I am definitely going to do it 👍🏻
