Best makeup counter for a makeover with my Mum

My Mum (73 years) and I (44) are going Christmas shopping in London next week. I would like some new make up for Christmas (usually buy Clinique or Mac) and Mum always buys No 7 and would like to branch out!

I am pretty clueless. Which brands do a good makeover (we are expecting to pay - ideally to be offset against buying makeup!) and which stores would provide the nicest experience (we get to go shopping in London together once every couple of years, so would like it to be memorable)

TIA

Clarins, Chanel, Dior, IT Cosmetics,

It really depends on the makeup artist and where your going some are better than others regardless of the brand.

Anyone know a good one? Shame there isn’t a tripadvisor for makeovers!

Is your mum quite agile? The reason I ask I should because most make up counter makeovers have you sat on stools which can be uncomfortable.
I had a Charlotte Tilbury makeover when my DD married. She did a super job, but boy did I have back ache! Sitting on a stool for an hour is no fun. I paid around £50 which could be reimbursed against their products. Your mum may find the cost of the higher end products exhorbitant of she's used to No 7 prices.
Body Shop do make overs, and are reasonably priced.

I’d have a look at Selfridges. They used to have a different area for makeovers but I can’t see that anymore.

This link will give you an idea of the different types of makeover from different brands

You can book a Charlotte Tilbury one here:

I would go to Selfridges and go to the Estée Lauder counter

Bobbi Brown every time. Book at Selfridges or John Lewis.

How much does your mum like make-up? I've had two Charlotte Tilbury makeovers now and it's quite a full-on look. I barely recognised myself in a shop window afterwards - although my DN who looooves the contouring thought I looked lush.

Bobbi Brown or Laura Mercier is flattering, subtle make-up for all ages. Peter Jones is maybe a bit quieter than JL Oxford St, esp at this time of year, and you're not stepping out into the mayhem of Oxford St afterwards. (Although maybe a bit of festive mayhem's what you're after!) Or you could go to a Space NK, where the assistants are usually make-up artists - I had a beautiful makeover in the tiny Marylebone High St branch.

Lancome. I always bring my mum for any events she is going to. She's 75. They're fab.

Bobbi Brown at John Lewis are really rude IME - Laura Mercier there are lovely, especially for older faces.

elliemcx · 28/11/2019 17:37

Armani is fabulous for all ages.

TerpsichoreanMuse · 29/11/2019 16:05

If you book them with Selfridges or JL, do you have to pay?

MichaelMosleyisagod · 29/11/2019 16:40

For most of the 'makeover' appointments, you seem to pay about £40 and then you get that back as credit towards the make up

If you want a really nice experience go to Charlotte Tilbury in Covent Garden

Otherwise I would recommend Bobbi Brown on John Lewis ox st
